Two years ago, Mt. Laurels
Bryce Reece had never picked up
a lacrosse stick.
Now, hes preparing to play in
one of lacrosses biggest events.
Just two years after choosing to
play lacrosse for the first time,
Reece will be traveling with an
all-star team to Denver for the
2014 Lacrosse World Champi-
onships. Reeces team will be
playing against other 13-and-
under all-star teams from around
the United States.
Reece has spent the last couple
of years playing lacrosse for the
Mt. Laurel Indians.
His talent made him stand out,
and his coaches encouraged him
to try out with U.S. Lacrosse for
the Denver games.
A couple of guys I coached
with are very avid lacrosse fans,

said Bryces father, Tony. One of
the fathers told me U.S. lacrosse is
putting a team together and they
sent out emails to all the teams in
the area to nominate their top
three players.
Bryce was one of approximate-
ly 70 kids to try out for the all-star
team in Hightstown this spring.
The majority of the kids selected
for the team have at least four
years experience playing
lacrosse.
Playing at the World Champi-
onships could be a once-in-a-life-
time opportunity because the
World Lacrosse Championships
are held only once every four
years.
Bryce realizes this is his
chance to take on some of the
best players from around the
country in his age group.
My team is playing against
other good teams, and I expect
there to be good competition, he
said.
While Bryce is new to the
sport, Tony played lacrosse for
Cornell University in the mid-
1980s and was coaching prior to
Bryce taking up the sport. For
many years, Bryce didnt play be-
cause he wasnt interested.
I hadnt been interested in
lacrosse for awhile, Bryce said.
I had been playing baseball and
basketball.
Tony always thought Bryce
had the skills and athleticism for
lacrosse, but he wasnt going to
force his son to play.
After some time, Bryce finally
decided to give lacrosse a try.
My dad told me I guarantee
you, if you try it, youll be great at
it, Bryce said.
And then here I am, two years
later, Im on an all-star team going
to Denver.
Being around lacrosse as a
player and coach, Tony believed
Bryce has the speed and skills to
play the game. While Bryce isnt
the biggest player on the field, his
speed allows him to elude defend-
ers.
He has a gift that God gave
him, his speed, Tony said.
You can be five feet tall and be
a terror. Ive played the game. Ive
seen it.
Bryces speed gave him an ad-
vantage over the competition,
however he has still needed time
to pick up the fundamentals of
the game.
Bryce has dedicated most of
his free time to lacrosse to make
up for lost experience. Even when
he is not on the field, he has fig-
ured out ways to improve his
weaknesses, such as his ball han-
dling from the weak side.
Since Im right-handed, I
started doing things with my left
hand, he said. Its been pretty
useful.
Lacrosse takes up most of
Bryces sports calendar now. He
was selected for the South Jersey
Shamrocks lacrosse team this
summer, meaning he will be play-
ing the sport straight through the
summer and fall.
He plans to continue playing
basketball during the cold weath-
er months as well.
Down the road, Bryce isnt sure
whether lacrosse or basketball
will take precedence. However,
with his fast start in lacrosse, he
believes he can some day reach
the same level his father did 30
years ago.

T
he U.S. Supreme Court last
week declined to rule on New
Jerseys fight against the feder-
al ban on sports gambling in all but
four states. To most, that would seem
like the final out, the last chance to
win has come and gone.
Gov. Christie, one of the biggest pro-
ponents of legalized sports gambling
in the state, responded that way when
asked about the decision. They said
no, so we have to move on, he said.
State Sen. Ray Lesniak, the champi-
on of the bill that attempted to over-
turn the federal ban, has other ideas,
though. Lesniak, in all his glory, has
no plans of dropping the fight.
While he is disappointed with the
Supreme Courts decision not to hear
New Jerseys case, he feels its not the
final blow to legalized sports gambling
in the state.
His solution unregulated sports
gambling. And he says judges for the
U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third
Circuit set the precedent for the legali-
ty of doing so in their decision last
September.
The federal law in question, the Pro-
fessional and Amateur Sports Protec-
tion Act of 1992, forbids states from ac-
tively encouraging sports gambling in
forms such as issuing licenses and
promoting the activity, in ways like
New Jersey does for its Atlantic City
casinos and racetracks across the
state. What the law doesnt do is say
that having no law prohibiting sports
gambling is unlawful.
Lesniak says the states of Washing-
ton and Colorado have set the prece-
dent for this type of unregulated activ-
ity. Federal law prohibits the manu-
facture and distribution of marijuana,
but they havent stepped in to stop Col-
orado and Washington from legalizing
it, according to Lesniak.
Hes right there, but thats quite the
slippery slope. With no regulation on
sports gambling, just imagine how
corrupt this could become. Weve all
seen movies such as Casino and doc-
umentaries on the subject is Lesni-
ak blind to the fact that it could hap-
pen all over again in New Jersey? At-
lantic City could become the Las
Vegas of the 1950s, and no one wants
that, not even for more tax revenue.
Will professional sports leagues say
they no longer allow franchises to be
located in New Jersey because of this
unregulation? What about the NCAA?
Will the New Jersey Devils and Rut-
gers University football not be sanc-
tioned anymore? It could happen.
Sometimes in life, one needs to real-
ize the fight is lost, that one has been
defeated. This is one of those cases,
Ray Lesniak. Let it be.
Its time to wave the white flag
We lost the sports gambling fight, so its time to give it a rest
Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on the Supreme
Courts decision not to hear New Jerseys
fight for sports gambling, or Ray Lesniaks
continued push to legalize it?
Two residents awarded scholarships
Firstrust Bank recently announced that
Mt. Laurel residents Colleen Scott and Dal-
las Hogan have been awarded scholarships
as part of the 45th annual Samuel A. Green
Scholarship program.
The awards program is one of the re-
gions most renowned high school scholar-
ship programs.
Scott and Hogan were two of 35 deserv-
ing scholarship recipients who were cele-
brated at The Franklin Institute.
The purpose of this scholarship compe-
tition is to empower students to utilize
their ingenuity and education to advance
their communities, and what better place
to celebrate this mission than The
Franklin Institute, a model for using cre-
ativity and intellect to give back to the
world? said Richard J. Green, CEO and
vice chairman of Firstrust.
We are excited to celebrate our 80th an-
niversary with such a distinguished group
of scholarship recipients, all of whom are
poised to make positive changes in their
own communities.
Green, founder of Firstrust, believed in
the importance of receiving a college edu-
cation and using it to give back to the com-
munity.
Eighty years later, the bank remains
committed to these same values. This an-
nual scholarship program upholds those
founding principles by honoring young
people in the region who reflect these prin-
ciples.
Hogan received a $5,000 special recogni-
tion award scholarship.
Hogan is a graduating senior from
Lenape High School.
Scott, also a Lenape senior, received a
$1,000 scholarship. She was one of 30 stu-
dents to receive the $1,000 scholarship.

Just minutes from Mt. Laurel
Reunited and it feels so good
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
United States Navy petty offi-
cer second class Frank Tommy
Schafer reported for duty at Indi-
an Mills Elementary School in
Shamong last week. This time,
though, the duty was not to his
country but to his family.
Schafer, deployed most recent-
ly in Japan, hasnt been home for
three years. That absence has
been hard on his 8-year-old sister,
Riley Gardner. Conversations
through Skype and FaceTime try
to fill the void, but the siblings
had not seen one another in per-
son since Gardner was 5 years
old.
Until Tuesday, June 24.
During a special assembly held
for students at Indian Mills, Prin-
cipal Nicole Moore called Riley, a
third-grade student, to the stage
to present her with the Most Sur-
prised Child Award.
As the crowd of students
looked on, a voice that sounded
very familiar to Riley could be
heard over the loudspeaker read-
ing an essay about a role model
that she had written to her broth-
er.
It was a school project that
challenged students to think of a
role model in their lives. Riley
picked her big brother.
As long as I can remember, my
brother has always been there for
me. He is super brave, Schafer
read from behind a curtain. He
is giving his life to protect all
American families. That why my
brother is my role model.
Riley listened carefully, hear-
ing every word read from her
essay.
Her studious face quickly
turned to one of pure joy as it be-
came strawberry red with tears
rushing down her cheeks. Big
brother walked out behind the
now open curtain.
When he popped out, it was
like, wow, I cant believe hes
here, Riley said. Like, it was
sort of like an explosion. Because
it just like blew up my mind. I
never knew he would actually
come here.
Riley ran over, hugged him and
buried her face into the chest of
her brother.
I think it went really well,
Schafer said, with an ear-to-ear
grin.
Schafer, a 2007 graduate of
Lenape High School, said he
worked to stay in touch with
Riley.
Weve always been close,
Schafer said. She means the
world to me. She keeps me going.
She inspires me with her drive to
succeed in school and soccer as
well. Its pretty rough, you know
being away from family, especial-
ly a younger sibling. You just
strive to get that connection
back.

driving a dark sedan.
A resident of the unit block of
Hillside Lane reported a criminal
mischief to their residence. The
incident occurred at 11:40 p.m. on
June 20. A window screen was
damaged as a result of eggs being
thrown at the residence. Damage
is estimated at $25.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 19-
year-old male of the 400 block of
Equality Court at his residence
on June 21 at 10 p.m. His arrest
was the result of an investigation
into a robbery that occurred on
June 16 on the 200 block of Kirby
Way. During that incident the sus-
pect and three male juveniles as-
saulted a 17-year-old victim. They
took the victims cigarettes and
attempted to take his cell phone.
The suspect was also arrested for
a theft that occurred on the 300
block of Tolerance Court on May
19. During that incident, he
arranged to sell a pair of sneak-
ers to an 18-year-old male victim
via the internet. The victim pre-
sented $200 and a pair of sun-
glasses worth $160 as payment for
the sneakers. The suspect took
the money and sunglasses and
ran off. At the time of his arrest,
he was found to be in possession
of marijuana. He was charged
with robbery, conspiracy to com-
mit robbery, theft, assault and
possession of marijuana under 50
grams. He was lodged at the
Burlington County Jail in lieu of
a total of $16,500 bail.
An employee of Sentsy, on the
200 block of Creek Road, reported
a forgery. The victim reported
that a customer mailed an over-
payment in the amount of $2,020
for an online order in the amount
of $229.30 in May. Following a re-
fund of the overpaid amount, the
victim noticed fraudulent ac-
count activity on June 18.
Guests of a hotel on the 300
block of Century Parkway report-
ed the theft of an iPad mini and a
Dell laptop computer from a hotel
room. The computers are valued
at $1,400. The incident occurred
on June 22, between 4 p.m. and
midnight.
