MILE MP is metal-enclosed air-insulated
switchgear conforming to LSC category 2B
and partition class PM. MILE panels are
intended for indoor installations in 12kV,
17,5kV and 24 kV electrical networks.
Design
The design is fully type tested including
internal arc tests according to IEC 62271-
200 (internal arc classified: AFLR,
31.5kA/1s).
MILE switchgear is fundamentally
designed so that all compartments are
accessible from the front. Optionally, the
cable compartment can be accessible from
the rear.
Cable connection points are at a
comfortable height of 460mm. The
partition between circuit breaker and cable
compartments can be removed to get an
easy access to cable terminations.

the doors of cable and circuit breaker
compartments allow service personnel to
visually observe VCB and earthing switch
positions.
Typical panel designs with top-entry for
cables or busbars are available.
MILE panels are created for straight-
forward manufacturing. No welding,
truing, grinding and cleansing procedures
are required.
Mechanical and electrical interlocks as well
as provisions for padlocks are available.
All switching operations can be performed
with the doors closed.
Design versions
There are the two design versions of the
withdrawable unit:

Properly designed labyrinths as well as additional
steel sheets provide maximum operator safety in case
of internal arc fault.
ENCLOSURE
The enclosure is made of corrosive resistant
hot-dip galvanized steel sheets. Its design
allows fast assembly with screws only. No
welding, truing, grinding or cleansing is
necessary. No jigs are required for assembly.
Doors
The coated doors are made of hot-dip
galvanized steel sheets. Robust hinges and
handles provide for convenient and safe
closing. The closing mechanisms are available
for left or right hand operation. Inspection
window is made from explosion-proof glass
providing maximal safety for personal.

Natural ventilation circuit
here is a natural ventilation circuit arranged
around the circuit breaker to provide powerful
extraction of the heat appearing due to circuit
breaker operating at high currents or at high
ambient temperatures. The cool air is sucked
into the circuit below the circuit breaker door
and withdrawn from the panel through the
gas exhaust channel. In case of internal arc
blast, the reverse air current boosted by a high
pressure instantly closes the special valve
inside the shaft, thus preventing hot gases
escaping from the panel.

COMPARTMENTS

Each panel consists of four compartments:
Busbar compartment (A)
Circuit breaker compartment (B)
The low voltage compartment (C)
Cable compartment (D)
Two metal ducts for auxiliary circuit wiring run
on each side of the panel from the bottom to
the LV compartment.
All service and maintenance operations are
carried out from the front with the
switchboard being wall-mounted. Optionally
access to the cable compartment is available
from rear.
For maximum operator safety all switching
operations are performed with the doors
closed.
Busbar compartment
The busbar compartment houses the main
busbar system connected to the fixed upper
isolating contacts of the circuit breaker by
means of branch connections. The main
busbars are made of electrolytic copper. The
busbar compartment of each panel is
segregated from the busbar compartments of
the neighbouring panels.
Low voltage compartment
The low-voltage compartment is designed to
mount all secondary circuit connections within
the single panel as well as interconnections
between adjacent panels and transit
connections. The spacious compartment
allows the installation of multi-functional
microprocessor protection relay, energy
meters, lighting, heating and many other
devices.
6
Cable compartment
The cable compartment houses the
branch connections
earthing busbar
earthing switch
power cables
surge arresters
instrument transformers
(current transformers,
voltage transformers)
Circuit breaker compartment
The circuit breaker compartment houses the
bushing insulators containing fixed contacts
for the connection of the circuit breaker to the
busbars and the cable compartment. The
bushings are single-pole type and are made of
cast resin. They are covered with metallic
shutters.
The metallic shutters operate automatically
during the movement of the circuit breaker
from the racked-out position to the service
position and vice versa.
The position of the circuit breaker can be seen
from the front of the panel through an
inspection window.
Access and service continuity
The switchgear compartments do not need
any tools for opening. Interlocks allow an
access only when the corresponding high
voltage parts are dead and earthed. Metallic
shutters and partitions segregate the
compartments from each other and when a
compartment is opened all other panels in the
installation and all Cable compartments
(including that in the panel concerned) remain
in operation. (LSC2B-PM according to IEC
62271-200).

7
EQUIPMENT

Earthing switch
Each Cable compartment can be equipped with an
earthing switch for cable earthing.
When installed in metering, bus coupler or bus riser
panels it can also be used to earth the busbar system.
The earthing switch has a short circuit making
capacity. The position of the earthing switch can be
seen from the front of the panel by means of
mechanical position indication and in addition
through an inspection window on the rear door.
Interlocks
MILE switchgear is fitted with all interlocks needed
to guarantee the highest level of safety for
operators. According to IEC 62271-200 the
interlocking devices prevent
closing of the circuit breaker in an intermediate
position
racking-out of the circuit breaker in the closed
position
racking-in of the circuit breaker in the closed
position
opening of the circuit breaker compartment door
as long as the circuit breaker is not in the test
position
racking-in of the circuit breaker with the
compartment door open
In addition, if the panel is equipped with an earthing
switch, the interlocking devices prevent
racking-in of the circuit breaker with the earthing
switch closed
closing of the earthing switch when the circuit
breaker is in connected or intermediate position
opening of the cable compartment door with the
earthing switch open
opening of the earthing switch with the feeder
compartment door open
Padlocks
Each door can be locked in its closed position by
means of padlocks.
The operations for circuit breaker racking-in/out and
earthing switch opening/closing can be prevented
by applying the padlocks to the corresponding
insertion slots.
The metallic shutters can be locked by means of two
independent padlocks in both the open and closed
positions.
8
Vacuum Circuit Breaker
MILE switchgear is designed solely for Tavrida
Electric advanced vacuum circuit breakers. Tavrida
Electric has simplified the mechanical structure of
the circuit breaker to the greatest possible degree. It
uses three single-coil magnetic actuators, one per
pole. All switching elements are assembled along a
single axis. All mechanical movements are therefore
direct and linear. The three actuators are mounted in
a steel frame and are mechanically linked by a
synchronizing shaft.
Completely avoided is failure of critical components
such as
mechanical latching
gears, chains, bearings and levers
tripping and closing coils
motors to charge springs
The result is up to 150,000 C-O cycles at rated
current or up to 100 operations at full short circuit
breaking current without the need to replace or
adjust any parts. Tavrida Electric vacuum circuit
breakers are maintenance free over the total life
expectancy of at least 25 years.
Instrument Transformers
The panel is designed to be equipped with current
transformers, toroidal current transformers and
voltage transformers according to the dimensions of
DIN 42600. For other transformers the panel can be
adapted on request.
Power Cables
Up to a maximum of 6 cables per phase can be used
depending on the unit dimensions and the cable
cross-section. Access to the cables is provided either
from the front or from the rear. The cables enter the
panel from the bottom. Optional top entry design is
available.
Surge Arresters
In the cable compartment space is provided for three
fixed-mounted surge arresters.
Protection System
A wi de range of VAMP (Fi nl and) and
MICROELLECTRICA SCIENTIFICA (Italia) protection
systems are available as the standard option to
ensure easy SCADA integration. Other protection
systems from well-known manufacturers can be
utilized on request.
