Cooling Tower Selection Part 1
Strategies for Water Use Efficiency
By Bob Van Goor

Open loop evaporative type Cooling Towers by design create emissions of evaporation and drift. Drift emissions from
open-loop evaporative type cooling towers are unavoidable. Stand next to a conventional cooling tower and it feels like
you might be taking a shower. The amount of drift can vary depending on tower design and will include any water
treatment added (chemicals).

The amount of drift produced by any cooling tower is a function of four factors: (1) The size of the water droplets
produced by the towers nozzles. (2) The efficiency of the nozzles in terms of putting the water into the fill media versus
simply spraying the water into the air above the fill pack. (3) The velocity of the hot air exiting the top of the tower. (4)
The efficiency of the towers Drift Eliminators.

Here is what to ask for when selecting a cooling tower
able to provide the lowest drift emissions:

- A conventional counter-flow cooling towers spray
nozzles produce millions of small drops we call them
micro-droplets. Their light weight allows them to be
more easily entrained in the towers exiting airflow.
Tower Tech Nozzles are designed to suppress drift by
producing a coarser, and therefore heavier, water
droplet to reduce this phenomena.

- Today, you can select a cooling tower with velocities as
low as 850 feet per minute (fpm) compared with most
conventional towers with velocities as high as 1,700 fpm.

- High Efficiency Drift eliminators can be used to achieve
results of .0004% or better drift loss compared to
.002%/.005% normally used.

Tower Tech cooling towers can provide the solutions shown above and will result in a 90% reduction of water lost via
Drift compared to conventional cooling towers.
Coming Soon:
The current draft of ASHRAE 90.1-2010 Mandatory Provisions in 2013 will call for:
Cooling towers shall be equipped with efficient drift eliminators that achieve drift reduction to a maximum of .002% of
the re-circulated water volume for counterflow towers and .005% of the re-circulated water flow for cross flow towers.

Next week we will look at strategies to improve cycles of concentration.
