The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) was established as a small
bureau in 1908 under the Department of Commere and !olie" #t had$ for its prinipal
funtions$ the re%istration of laborers$ the ompilation and analysis of statistis pertainin% to
labor mar&et situation$ the or%ani'ation of employment a%enies$ and the settlement of
disputes"
On Deember 8$ 19(($ the )ureau of Labor was onstituted as a Department by
*irtue of +epubli ,t -1.1" /ine then$ it has ontinuously e*ol*ed its thrusts and strate%ies
to respond to emer%in% soio0politial and eonomi hallen%es while &eepin% as primary
onern the protetion and promotion of the welfare of loal and o*erseas 1ilipino wor&ers

Today$ the DOLE is the national %o*ernment a%eny mandated to formulate poliies$
implement pro%rams and ser*e as the poliy0oordinatin% arm of the E3euti*e )ranh in the
field of labor and employment"
