1.0 Introduction
For OSS Watch, open source software is software that has been released under
an Open Source Initiative (OSI) certified licence. OSS Watch uses this OSI-approved
list as a means of avoiding debates over interpretation of the open source definition
and which licences do or do not conform to it.
Open source hardware consists of physical artifacts of technology designed and
offered by the open design movement. Bothfree and open source software (FOSS) as
well as open source hardware is created by this open source culture movement and
applies a like concept to a variety of components. The term usually means that
information about the hardware is easily discerned. Hardware design (i.e. mechanical
drawings, schematics, bills of material, PCB layout data, HDL source code
andintegrated circuit layout data), in addition to the software that drives the hardware,
are all released with the FOSS approach.

2.0 The Latest Open Source Operating System (OS)
2.1 Meaning of open source OS
Operating system can be any Linux or UNIX flavour, but important thing is File
system. ZFS is best suite for storage, so snapshot, writable clone and replication is
free. Most of the storage company used to charge too much money as snapshop/clone
andreplicationlicense.
ZFS is very simple and convenient. You can use any operating system under vmware
or Virtual box that support ZFS so you can manage your logical devices on top of
physical devices. You don't need to purchase any hardware or software to manage
yourstorage.
OS means operating system, which is the computer programming that 'operates' a
computer. Open source refers to any application for which you can see and change the
underlying code. A big advantage of an open source program is that it is a
collaborative between many people.





2.2 Examples of open source OS
Android is an operating system based on the Linux kernel with a user interface based
on direct manipulation, designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such
as smartphones and tablet computers. The operating system uses touch inputs that
loosely correspond to real-world actions, like swiping, tapping, pinching, and reverse
pinching to manipulate on-screen objects, and a virtual keyboard. Despite being
primarily designed for touchscreen input, it also has been used in televisions, games
consoles, digital cameras, and other electronics.
As of 2011, Android has the largest installed base of any mobile OS and as of 2013,
its devices also sell more than Windows, iOS and Mac OS devices combined. As of
July 2013 the Google Play store has had over 1 million Android apps published, and
over 50 billion apps downloaded. A developer survey conducted in AprilMay 2013
found that 71% of mobile developers develop for Android.
Android's source code is released by Google under open source licenses, although
most Android devices ultimately ship with a combination of open source and
proprietary software. Initially developed by Android, Inc., which Googlebacked
financially and later bought in 2005, Android was unveiled in 2007 along with the
founding of the Open Handset Alliancea consortium of hardware, software, and
telecommunication companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile
devices.
Android is popular with technology companies which require a ready-made, low-cost
and customizable operating system for high-tech devices. Android's open nature has
encouraged a large community of developers and enthusiasts to use the open-source
code as a foundation for community-driven projects, which add new features for
advanced usersor bring Android to devices which were officially released

Linux (
i
/lnks/ LIN-ks or /links/ LEE-nuuks) is a Unix-like and mostly POSIX-
compliant computeroperating system assembled under the model of free and open
source software development and distribution. The defining component of Linux is
the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on 5 October 1991 byLinus
Torvalds. The Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux, which has led to
somecontroversy.

3.0 The Latest Open Source Application Software
3.1 Meaning of open source application software
Open source application software is computer software that is available in source
code form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for
copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study,
change, and improve the software. Open source licenses often meet the requirements
of the Open Source Definition. Some open source application software is available
within the public domain. Open source application software is very often developed in
a public, collaborative manner. Open source application software is the most
prominent example of open source development and often compared to user-
generated content or open content movements. The term open source application
softwareoriginated as part of a marketing campaign for free application software.

3.2 Examples of open source application software
OpenOffice is a powerful program that is nowadays deemed to be the trustworthy
alternative to paid office suits. OpenOffice helps to save your money as there is no
payment required. Acquiring Open Office means that you have no limits in using this
suite for whichever purpose you need. The developers also allow the commercial use
of the app. It has many things in common with LibreOffice.
OpenOffice includes Writer (word processor), Calc (spreadsheet), Impress
(presentations), Draw (vector graphics), Base (database) and Math (formula editor).

Pervasive computing means that the technology is gracefully integrated in our everyday life. The
user is no longer aware of this embedded technology. It also refers to computers contained in
common place objects such as cars and etc. It appliances and implies that people are unaware of
their presence. Pervasive computing uses web technology, portable devices, mobile devices, wireless
communications and nomadic or ubiquitos computing system. Other terms for pervasive computing
are Ubiquitous Computing, Calm Technology and Thing That Think. It is about the ability to deliver
any information to any device over any network. In short, it is about computers everywhere, where
computers are embedded into equipment, machines, furniture or people. The current technology
has evolved into embedded network and wireless.

6.0 Conclusion

development model is well suited for consumer devices. We have created products in
a shorter time and with fewer resources with open source than we have managed to
create using proprietary software alone. In essence, open source offers time and cost
savings in a form of readily available components and subsystems, available
developers, and an effective development model.
Open source doesnt make software development free or easy. It provides
effective tools for product creation. Combining these new tools, such as community
involvement, and utilization of open components, with more traditional software and
product engineering practices is a good mix.
As a device manufacturer, we alone are responsible for the quality of the end
product. We must therefore utilize all quality and software engineering mechanisms
to achieve the needed quality. We cannot skip such development aspects such as
specifications, integration, testing, and documentation, for example. In addition,
open source introduces certain new requirements, such as community interaction and
legal and IPR management. These hard requirements seem to contradict with open
community work in certain cases. We have not managed to successfully solve all
these conflicts. However, we are working on improving community participation in
the stabilization process as well as allowing community members to participate
firmware development. The results are not yet known, though.
