The Sun
The bright lights of Hollywood
are the pinnacle for actors, musi-
cians and artists, all of whom
head to the city looking for star-
dom.
Reeves Balderson, a freshman
at Moorestown High School, got
to Los Angeles on a different
path.
Reeves won first place at the
Coriell Science Fair in March,
which was the beginning of a se-
ries of science fairs that led him
to Los Angeles, where he compet-
ed in the Intel International Sci-
ence and Engineering Fair.
He has always been interested
in math and science, said Stacey,
Reeves mother. He first had an
opportunity to participate in a
science fair in sixth grade and
hes loved it ever since.
Stacey has a Ph.D. in chem-
istry, and Reeves attributes his
fascination with science to grow-
ing up around it his whole life.
It definitely helps that my
mom is a chemist, Reeves said.
She can explain things to me in
ways that make me want to learn
more.
The double science education
Reeves has received has paid off
greatly, and while his first-place
finish at the Coriell Science Fair
was a great accomplishment, it
was the silver medal he earned at
the Delaware Valley Science Fair
in April that sent him to the ISEF
competition in Los Angeles.
The ISEF competition is the
worlds largest international pre-
college science competition.
Reeves was one of 1,700 finalists
from among the 7 million high
school students who tried out at
regional science fairs.
It was a great experience,
Reeves said. I had a lot of fun
and I got to see a lot of other in-
teresting ideas, too.
The title of Reeves research is
Sun In....Water Out! Light Ab-
sorbing Nanoparticles Dramati-
cally Enhance Vaporization in
Solar Desalination.
Our family has a house at the
beach and, during the initial proj-
ect scoping, he became interested
in the idea of converting salt
water to fresh water using the
sunlight to change light to heat to
drive the process, Stacey said.
While Reeves has garnered a
lot of success from these competi-
tions, he understands he still has
a great deal of work to do to get
where he wants to be.
Im going to continue to do my
research, he said. I want to
prove this project even more and
make some improvements on my
design.
He is planning to enter more
science fairs next year, but, in the
meantime, he is continuing his
designs.
He has developed an idea for
designing small desalination
units using readily available com-
ponents we purchased at Target
and Home Depot, powered by
solar energy, for families to use in
areas far away from large towns
or cities, Stacey said.
While Reeves strives to do the
bulk of the research on his own,
he always knows he can rely on
his mother for support and guid-
ance.
Shes there whenever I need
something, he said. That defi-
nitely makes things easier for
me.

Annual parade July 4 at noon
Get ready to celebrate Ameri-
can Icons at the annual
Moorestown 4th of July Parade,
set to step off at noon on July 4,
along Chester Avenue and Main
Street.
The bald eagle, George Wash-
ington, Jeeps and Elvis are a just
a few examples of icons of Amer-
ican culture and history.
As the theme of this years pa-
rade, we hope those marching
will show us their favorite Ameri-
can icons.
Virtua Health and Wellness
Center of Moorestown is once
again the parades band sponsor,
providing the support needed to
bring the Polish American String
Band as our premier musical at-
traction for the third year in a
row.
Also returning this year is the
Philadelphia Brigade Band.
Known as Becks Band, this
group is a Civil War re-enactment
band that has also participated in
the parade for the past three
years. New to the parade this year
is the Hog Island Fancy Brigade,
which represents the comic side
of Philadelphia Mummery, a tra-
dition that has been uniquely
American for more than 100
years.
As the parade celebrates Amer-
icas icons, it also honors our tra-
dition of a volunteer military.
The parade welcomes all area vet-
erans to ride on the Veterans
Float, which is graciously provid-
ed by Mayberry Trucking.
Any veteran interested in rid-
ing on the float who has not yet
registered is invited to check in
by 11:30 a.m. at the parades stag-
ing area, the intersection of
Chester and Central avenues.
Moorestowns kids (with re-
sponsible adult supervision) are
also invited to march in the pa-
rade.
Whether dressing as their fa-
vorite American icon or simply
donning the Stars and Stripes,
kids of all ages are welcome to
walk or ride on July 4. Partici-
pants should check in at the pa-
rade staging area by 11:30 a.m. at
the intersection of Chester and
Central avenues.
Anyone participating in the pa-
rade should note that access to
this intersection by car will be
limited and to please consider
parking a block or so away. Please
e-mail the Parade Committee if
you have any questions:

letter to the editor
Can we now pay attention to the roads near
the new Moorestown Library and Town Hall?
Since the imminent opening of the new Moorestown Library is
near, after these many years of discussion and construction, what
about the roads?
The condition of the streets, both Washington and Second
Street, adjacent to the new library property, is terrible.
They certainly do not reflect the new buildings and our commu-
nity.
Furthermore, the condition of Second Street, west of Church
Street is also deplorable. When can we have these roadways
repaved?
Ben Naimoli
T
he U.S. Supreme Court last
week declined to rule on New
Jerseys fight against the feder-
al ban on sports gambling in all but
four states. To most, that would seem
like the final out, the last chance to
win has come and gone.
Gov. Christie, one of the biggest pro-
ponents of legalized sports gambling
in the state, responded that way when
asked about the decision. They said
no, so we have to move on, he said.
State Sen. Ray Lesniak, the champi-
on of the bill that attempted to over-
turn the federal ban, has other ideas,
though. Lesniak, in all his glory, has
no plans of dropping the fight.
While he is disappointed with the
Supreme Courts decision not to hear
New Jerseys case, he feels its not the
final blow to legalized sports gambling
in the state.
His solution unregulated sports
gambling. And he says judges for the
U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third
Circuit set the precedent for the legali-
ty of doing so in their decision last
September.
The federal law in question, the Pro-
fessional and Amateur Sports Protec-
tion Act of 1992, forbids states from ac-
tively encouraging sports gambling in
forms such as issuing licenses and
promoting the activity, in ways like
New Jersey does for its Atlantic City
casinos and racetracks across the
state. What the law doesnt do is say
that having no law prohibiting sports
gambling is unlawful.
Lesniak says the states of Washing-
ton and Colorado have set the prece-
dent for this type of unregulated activ-
ity. Federal law prohibits the manu-
facture and distribution of marijuana,
but they havent stepped in to stop Col-
orado and Washington from legalizing
it, according to Lesniak.
Hes right there, but thats quite the
slippery slope. With no regulation on
sports gambling, just imagine how
corrupt this could become. Weve all
seen movies such as Casino and doc-
umentaries on the subject is Lesni-
ak blind to the fact that it could hap-
pen all over again in New Jersey? At-
lantic City could become the Las
Vegas of the 1950s, and no one wants
that, not even for more tax revenue.
Will professional sports leagues say
they no longer allow franchises to be
located in New Jersey because of this
unregulation? What about the NCAA?
Will the New Jersey Devils and Rut-
gers University football not be sanc-
tioned anymore? It could happen.
Sometimes in life, one needs to real-
ize the fight is lost, that one has been
defeated. This is one of those cases,
Ray Lesniak. Let it be.
Its time to wave the white flag
We lost the sports gambling fight, so its time to give it a rest
Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on the Supreme
Courts decision not to hear New Jerseys
fight for sports gambling, or Ray Lesniaks
continued push to legalize it?

Summer track meet series
World Athlete has announced
its 11th annual Community Sum-
mer Track Meet Series at
Moorestown High School. The
meets will be held on July 9, July
16, July 23 and July 30. The meets
are open to all age groups and
skill levels.
In addition to traditional track
meet events on July 9 and July 16,
this summer's series feature new
additions. There will be fully au-
tomated timing and the Fastest
Kid in the County competition at
the July 23 meet. All athletes
ages 3-14 in the 100-meter dash
races will be entered in the
Fastest Kid in the County compe-
tition. The fastest overall girl and
boy will receive the World Athlete
Cup.
A new event, the Obstacle
Course, will challenge athletes
during the July 30 meet. All youth
athletes receive a World Athlete
ribbon at every meet. Entrants
will get their own racing bib.
According to World Athlete
founder and meet director Troy
Pappas, who is also the
Moorestown boys track coach,
the meets have grown from 13 en-
tries in 2004 to several hundred
each summer.
The meets are a fun family fit-
ness activity. Many families come
every summer for a meet or two.
After 11 seasons, the World Ath-
lete track meet series has become
an annual summer tradition, he
said.
Part of the meet proceeds will
fund World Athlete Academy's
programs that promote fitness

The Moorestown Township
Council awarded a contract to
Loftus Construction Inc. to fix
dams at Strawbridge Lake at its
meeting on June 23.
Strawbridge Lake is the pearl
of Moorestown, Councilmember
Phil Garwood said. A lot of peo-
ple relate Moorestown to Straw-
bridge Lake, so its very impor-
tant that we keep the lake beauti-
ful and functional.
Strawbridge Lake Park offers
70 acres of open space along the
lake and is a popular destination
for boaters and fishermen. The
lake will see a huge increase in
use in the next few months, ac-
cording to Garwood.
Now that the summer is here,
more and more people are going
to be visiting the lake and the
park, he said. The dams are still
standing, and the lake has not
been affected as of yet, but with
the influx of people, we need to
get the dams repaired.
The township will use $66,330
from the Moorestown Open
Space, Recreation Farmland and
Historic Preservation Trust Fund
to begin the repairs. The total
amount of the contract awarded
to Loftus Construction is $338,230.
This will include repairs to
Hootens Creek Dam, Lower
Hootens Creek Dam and the
Moorestown Dam located at
Strawbridge Lake.
The dams are in pretty dire
condition, Garwood said. The
recent downpours and summer
rain we expect to be coming make
this a pressing issue we have to
take care of now.
Another problem with Straw-
bridge Lake has been the silt
buildup. The township will be
looking into this issue as the sum-
mer progresses as well.
We will be conducting hydrol-
ogy studies to determine what the
cause of the silt buildup is, Gar-
wood said.
After we get the results of
those studies, we will know more
about what the next steps will
be.
The dam repairs and hydrolo-
gy studies are an effort to keep
Strawbridge Lake as the center of
the community.
Strawbridge Lake is a wonder-
ful place, Garwood said. We
want to make sure that people
continue to head to the lake dur-
ing the summer, so we are doing
everything we can to keep the
lake beautiful and clean.
In other news:
Council acknowledged the
Special Olympics Torch Run that
passed through Moorestown on
June 12.
The torch run was a really
cool event and were proud that it
stopped through Moorestown,
Garwood said.
The council wanted to thank
all those who helped make that
happen and to the community for
representing Moorestown proud-
ly.
Council awarded a contract to
Spectrasev in the amount of
$120,000 for the removal and dis-
posal of contents of the waste-
water treatment plant secondary
digester.
The next Township Council
meeting will take place on July 7
at 7:30 p.m.

154 East Main Street, Moorestown
Friends of mine had been looking for a home in Moorestown for nearly a year w/ very specific criteria. A home
walking distance fromdowntown they could customize to make their own. I knew there was a possibility the owner
might want to sell this home, so I made contact to let them know I had a potential buyer. When we through we
could see the home could suit their needs. They had the vision to see what this home had the potential to be & fell
in love with it. We began negotiations while Canton Custom Homes began pricing renovations. Everything was
worked out, and now we get to save a beautiful home on Moorestowns Main St by restoring this gemto its original
glory w/ all the modern bells & whistles.

Former Superior Court
contractor indicted
This report comes from Joel
Bewley at the Burlington County
Prosecutors office:
Burlington County Prosecutor
Robert D. Bernardi announced
that a former contractor for the
state Superior Court system who
collected and disbursed debts
owed to creditors has been indict-
ed for misappropriating nearly
$75,000.
The man, age 53, formerly of
Sicklerville, was indicted on one
count of elements of computer
theft (second degree), one count
of theft by deception (third de-
gree) and one count of misappli-
cation of entrusted property
(third degree). The indictment
was returned June 19.
The man worked as a special
civil part court officer for the Su-
perior Court of New Jersey,
Burlington County Vicinage. The
man was not a court employee.
He was an independent contrac-
tor who provided the service of
collecting and processing pay-
ments from debtors.
The funds were then placed
into an account and transferred
to the creditors, with the man re-
ceiving a commission for each
transaction.
In January 2011, the court sys-
tem announced that the man was
no longer authorized to perform
the duties of a special civil part
court officer.
A subsequent audit of his ac-
counting records and activities
revealed that since August 2009
the man had illegally obtained
and/or commingled $74,383 in
funds above the amount he was
permitted to retain in commis-
sions.
The man is not in custody at
this time. He is considered a fugi-
tive and an arrest warrant has
been issued.
The investigation was conduct-
ed by the Burlington County
Prosecutors Office Financial
Crimes Unit with assistance from
the New Jersey Administrative
Office of the Courts.
