Project 3

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the coefficient of restitution of two different
tennis balls with respect to a solid floor. The coefficient of restitution represents the ratio of speeds
before and after an impact. The materials used to perform this experiment were the two tennis balls,
measuring tape, and a stop watch, and a solid surface. One of the tennis balls in the experiment was
tampered with and therefore had a very different coefficient of restitution than the commercial tennis
ball. Our goal was to measure and record the coefficient of restitution for each of the balls.
Procedure: Acquire two tennis balls from the professor. One will have a letter and one will have
a number. We received C and 18. You will also need a measuring tape and a stop watch. Take the
measuring tape and extend it to 6 feet. This will be the height each ball is dropped at. Each
measurement will be taken twice and averaged at the end. Start with ball C and drop it from the top of
the measuring tape. When it hits the ground start the timer and end it when the ball hits the ground a
second time. This records the amount of time taken for the first full bounce of the ball. When the ball
hits the ground the first time, another person will need to watch for how high it bounces and place their
hand at the peak of the bounce. Record these two numbers in seconds and inches. Repeat this process a
second time.
Release ball C from the top of the measuring tape starting the timer when the ball hits the
ground a second time instead of the first. Stop the timer when the ball hits the ground on the third
bounce. As before, have another person place their hand at the peak of the second bounce. Record the
height and time. Repeat this step a second time recording the results. Follow the same procedure for
ball 18 and record all data on a cart using excel.
To find the coefficient of restitution (e) use the equation e=(ha'/ha)^1/2. You can find the values
for ha and ha' in the charts shown on the next page. The value for ha' is the height recorded under
bounce 2 while the value for ha is the height recorded under bounce 1. Substituting the values into the
equation for both trials for two balls will give 4 coefficients of restitution.
