istobalanceindoorenvironmentalcomfortwithotherfactorssuchasinstallationcost,easeofmaintenance,andenergy
efficiency.ThedisciplineofHVACincludesalargenumberofspecializedtermsandacronyms,manyofwhicharesummarized
inthisglossary.

Thehourlyventilationratedividedbythevolumeofaspace.Forperfectlymixedairorlaminarflowspaces,thisisequal
tothenumberoftimesperhourthatthevolumethespaceisexchangedbymechanicalandnaturalventilation.Also

usuallydehumidifyingtheairinthebuilding.Chillersareoftwotypesaircooledorwatercooled.Aircooledchillersare
usuallyoutsideandconsistofcondensercoilscooledbyfandrivenair.Watercooledchillersareusuallyinsidea
building,andheatfromthesechillersiscarriedbyrecirculatingwatertoaheatsinksuchasanoutdoorcoolingtower.

fluid(suchaswateroranaqueoussolutionofethyleneglycol)tocarryheattoadistantsink,suchasground(earth
sink),abodyofwater,orair(aswithcoolingtowers).
