Design the small table

Design small table for a doll that has 150 g of

weight and 6 cm of dimension circle base. Use
Polyethylene (PE) to made. The dimension of
table is wide x deep x high = 14x8x4 cm and the
maximum defection is 0.5 cm .
( Can add rib )
Polyethylene (PE) Properties

Physical properties:
Mold shrinkage (in./in.) 3.5
Density (g/cm3) 1.10
Specific volume (in.3/lb) 25.2
Mechanical properties:
Ultimate tensile strength (psi) 8,000 55.158   Mpa
Shear strength (psi) 4,000 27.579   Mpa
Tensile impact strength (ft-lb/in.2) 25
Flexural modulus (x 10^5 psi) 6 4.13685 GPa
Rockwell hardness R80
Thermal properties:
Heat deflection temperature (F) 265
Coeff. therm. exp. (x10-5) (in./in./F) 3.0
Find the thickness of the small
table by separate in two parts.
That are beam and column.

The cross-section of
the small table
At the beam :
We set the doll at the middle of the
table. Because at the middle of the table
has high defection.

Find the distribution load

Substitute in Y max

Y max

19 × 520.437 × (0.01) 4
0.005 =
8 × 4.13688 × I

0.000099
I=
8 × 4.13688 × I
Then, We will get
−4
I = 0.0006 = 6 ×10
Next, find the value of

I x' = ∑(I + Ad ) 2
I x ' = ∑ ( I + Ad ) 2

= 0.24667t +1.125t

Then we set
I = I x'
0.0006 = 0.247t + 1.125t

Then, We get

t = 0.0024m
t = 2.4mm
At the column:
We check the column that long column or shot column.

We substitute the value in this equation:

Cc =

2π × 4.13685 ×10

From the calculation, we get ≥ Cc
K

That mean it is a long column.

Then we use the formula of OILER
The formula of OILER’s

π 2 (4.13685 ×109 )
σ cr =
(115.5)2

σ cr = 3.06 MPa

Then the value of σ cr less than the value of

Ultimate Tensile strength ( 3.06 MPa < 55.158 MPa ).
Then we can use the thickness t = 2.4 mm.
