The Archaic Period Education and Homer
English Language Arts Standards - Writing
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events
using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey
complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection,
organization, and analysis of content.
Background Information:
The Greek Archaic period saw the reappearance of the written word, along with the growth of
art, culture, government and education. However, not all children had the same educational
opportunities. Many factors determined a childs education and future opportunities, including
a familys status or trade and a childs gender and health. In spite of the differing educational
tracks, the epic poems by Homer, and storytelling in general, were an important part of the
education, social events and morals of the time.
The purpose of this unit is for students to understand the differences in opportunities and
lifestyles based upon the family to which a child was born in the Greek Archaic period. Through
the understanding of the Archaic period, students will select and explain a quote from Homer
that would be relevant to a student from that time period and also to a student in todays

1. To understand the educational and lifestyle opportunities for children in Archaic Greece.
2. To review the social impact and relevance of the teachings of Homer upon the children of
Archaic Greece.
3. To examine ancient moral observations (Homers) and apply to current society.

To do this we will do each of the following:
a. Research will focus on the gathering of information about the children of Archaic Greece and

2. Personal health
3. Educational opportunities and applicable subject matter
4. Lifestyle / career opportunities
5. Training
6. Societys impact upon the individual.
b. Students will write a narrative putting themselves in the role of a child in Archaic Greece and
describing their day to day life, in real or imagined form.
c. Students will review a selection of quotations by Homer and discuss interpretations in the
classroom setting.
d. Students will select a quote and will write about its relevance from the viewpoint of a child
of ancient Greece.
e. Students will use that same quote to write about its relevance to their life in todays world.

Peggy Maxfield, Linda Quay and myself met to discuss the Archaic Period lesson plan and
working together. We decided to focus on three topics, Peggy will concentrate on
mathematics and music, Linda will concentrate on health and food, and I will concentrate on
literacy and Homers teachings. We decided to come together as a group, after completing our
individual lesson plans in the form of a Greek feast, where we would have food, music and oral
histories presented.
