Track and Field Mr. Plesh would like to thank all the athletes that participated in the Regional Track and Field Meet that was held at Sunnybrae on June 13th. Your determination and drive led Warnica to a very impressive ribbon count. Congratulations on a fine performance. I know many of the athletes achieved personal bests during the competition, which is amazing. Thank-you to the Warnica staff once again for their support and assistance over the track and field season. Running a school sport as large as track and field, requires the support of the entire school. Your flexibility in altering your regular routines has been very much appreciated. Mabels Labels These are awesome for lunch containers, bags, and clothing. Mabels Labels is working on a new platform so for now just google Mabels Labels and search for Warnica Public School or Champaign #11242 on their site, more information will follow in the fall. A portion of the money comes back to Warnica. Labels are a lot more economical than replacing clothing. Note: It is a good idea to put first initial and last name for safety purposes.
Breakfast Club Breakfast club is open to all students and runs from 8:15 to 8:55 am each morning. We are also looking for volunteers to help out. If you can spare one hour (8:00 to 9:00 am) one day a week, the students would truly appreciate your time. Please contact Timmi to volunteer or if you have any questions.
VOLUNTEER CRIMINAL RECORD CHECKS A reminder that volunteers must complete an Offence Declaration annually after providing the original Criminal Records Check.
The work of school volunteers is a key component of school success. The Simcoe County District School Board sincerely thanks all parents, guardians and community members who generously donate their time in the service of public education.
Grade Eights Welcome to High School Both Barrie Central and Innisdale will be holding their orientation day on Thursday, August 28 th . This is an ESPRIT OPPORTUNITE EXCELLENCE / OPPORTUNITY SPIRIT EXCELLENCE
important day where students will meet a number of people, get a school tour and have some free food. Contact your high school for any further questions. (Barrie Central: 10:30 to 12:00) (Innisdale: 8:30 to 1:00)
Safe Welcome Implementation Over the last few months, a committee of staff from across the system has been meeting to plan for the next phase of implementation. As of September, and based on the recommendation of the committee representatives, the expectation is that all elementary schools will have front doors locked during the school day in September. All other school doors should be locked during the school day (except for when the door(s) are used during outdoor nutrition breaks).
Gifted Testing Some students who display an unusually advanced degree of general intellectual ability may require additional program support in order to reach their educational potential. In consultation with teachers and parents, the school staff uses the boards Gifted Screening Process (OLSAT) to determine who these students are. This screening process occurs in the fall. Any students currently in grade 2 and above may be screened. Students may be screened once in grade 3, either in grade 4 or 5, and either in grade 6,7 or 8. If you would like your child screened, please discuss with your child's current classroom teacher, who will then pass on your child's name to the SERT responsible for Gifted Screening. Mrs. Barber
Parents will have access to grades, attendance info when Parent Portal launches this fall Starting next school year, parents/guardians will be invited to create a Parent Portal account, which will give them access to their childs attendance and, in secondary school, grade information. Elementary school grades will be added to the tool in the near future. In high school, parents will be able to see attendance information for each period, as long as it has been submitted through PowerSchool (our student database). Parents can also see their childs grades in each course. Parents can sign up for email alerts from the Parent Portal for example, a high school parent might want a daily email with their childs attendance.
In the fall, schools will provide parents with their login information to create an account. Parents need their childs Student Number, as well as an Access ID. The Student Number is on the Student Information Verification Form, and the Access ID will be provided to families in a letter. If a student is 18, their parents will not be automatically invited to create an account. The Parent Portal login page is at http://ps.scdsb.on.ca. Registration now open for unique social media presentation for parents, educators Parents and educators are invited to attend Parent 2.0: How social media can help your child thrive with George Couros, Division Principal of Innovative Teaching and Learning with Parkland School Division in Alberta. Location: Bear Creek Secondary School (100 Red Oak Dr., Barrie) Date: Wednesday, August 27 Time: Doors open at 7 p.m., presentation at 7:30 p.m. Cost: FREE! Register online at www.scdsb.on.ca under Parents and Workshops. Space is limited so register early to reserve your spot. George Couros speaks on innovation and technology in the classroom to parents and educators across North America. Find out more about him at http://georgecouros.ca. Parent 2.0 How social media can help your child thrive Parent involvement in the learning process of schools is the number one factor for student success. As schools look towards using social media to improve learning, many parents may be fearful of what this means. Social media provides an opportunity for parents to have meaningful engagement in the learning of their children. This can greatly change the conversations not only at school, but also at home. ESPRIT OPPORTUNITE EXCELLENCE / OPPORTUNITY SPIRIT EXCELLENCE
This talk provides peace of mind to parents, while also engaging you to consider the unique opportunity you have to participate in your children's learning. Notice to students and families regarding out-of- attendance area requests Under the Simcoe County District School Board procedures (APM A7000), students can apply for and receive permission to attend an out-of-attendance-area school. Students will be permitted to continue in attendance as long as there are pupil places available. They may be required to return to their home school or transfer to another school when the capacity of the school they are attending has been reached and pupil places are required for students residing within the attendance areas. An approval may also be revoked by the Superintendent of Education after consultation with the receiving school principal for reasons related to the students behaviour, attendance, actions or inactions at a future date. Even with this permission, however, transportation to and from school is the responsibility of the out-of-attendance-area student and/or parent/guardian. How to continue your childs learning habits over the summer months As the school year winds down and kids look forward to summer vacation, parents wonder, How can I help my child stay interested in learning over the summer? Making learning fun throughout the year is the key to fostering your kids love of learning, even while away from school. There are many ways for parents to inspire learning at home, on the road and at the cottage or campsite this summer. Its all about incorporating learning into daily life. Here are some ideas: Take the time to thoroughly explore your childs current chief interest. Take a trip to your local library or do some searching online to find out more about their favourite subject or topic that they want to learn more about. Taking a trip? Keep your kids occupied in the car by thinking beyond the DVD player and checking out audio books from your local library or finding child-friendly podcasts. Travelling to a new city or town is also a good opportunity to check out local museums, historical sites or science attractions. Try different theme nights where you can cook a meal together and teach your children about the culture the food comes from - ask them to research the culture and recipe. Or, go to the local farmers market together to learn about farming and local foods. If you have a garden or belong to a community garden, get children involved in planting. If you have a balcony, fill a couple of pots with soil and plant flowers or vegetables. Or fill an inexpensive window box with herbs or flowers. On rainy days, bring out the arts and craft projects! Special treasures can be made from things found in your household egg cartons, glue, crayons, etc. Getting crafty stimulates the brain and develops artistic creativity. Keep up bedtime reading sessions. Your child craves routine (yes, even in summer), and reading together is an investment that you should keep up year-round. Seize this time to delve into longer adventures or series that might be too daunting for the school year. Encourage your child to extend their writing skills by keeping a nature, travel or reading journal. They can write about the places they see on family vacations, create a scrapbook with photos, record nature walks and things they see, or keep a log of good books they have read. Get outside and play! Homework Help available this summer Homework Helps Ask a Tutor chat service will be open for the month of July. Every Monday to Friday, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m., Ontario-certified math teachers will be available online to help grade 7 to 10 students ESPRIT OPPORTUNITE EXCELLENCE / OPPORTUNITY SPIRIT EXCELLENCE
with their math questions. This service will be available from July 2 to 31. Visit https://homeworkhelp.ilc.org/. Become a Roots of Empathy instructor for next school year Are you looking for ways to contribute to the growth and well-being of students and communities in Simcoe County? The SCDSB is looking for volunteers to undertake an exciting and rewarding opportunity as a Roots of Empathy (ROE) Instructor. At the heart of the award-winning program are a neighbourhood infant and parent who visit the classroom several times over the school year. A trained ROE Instructor coaches students to observe the baby's development and to label the baby's feelings. Instructors deliver all aspects of the Roots of Empathy curriculum in the classroom and build respectful relationships with the participating family, classroom teacher and students. Roots of Empathy Instructors come from diverse professional backgrounds. Many have backgrounds in education, health, social work, counselling, speech therapy and recreation. ROE also has retired principals, school board superintendents, and police officers delivering the program. Classroom experience and knowledge of infant development are major assets. Volunteers must be willing to make a two-year commitment to Roots of Empathy to deliver the program on a weekly basis throughout September to June. For more information, or to apply to become a volunteer Instructor, please contact roots@scdsb.on.ca. Immunizations required for school attendance As of July 1, 2014, the Immunization School Pupils Act (ISPA) has added three new vaccines that students require for entry to school: meningococcal disease; pertussis (whooping cough) and varicella (chickenpox). These three vaccines are addition to existing requirements for proof of immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, polio, measles, mumps and rubella. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) is required under the ISPA to collect and maintain up-to- date records of all the above immunizations for every child registered in school within Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka. Now is a good time to contact your health care provider to discuss your childs immunization needs in light of the new legislation. Parents are required to contact the health unit to update immunization records for their children or provide a valid affidavit. Water safety tips to help keep kids safe Did you know 570 children drowned in Canada in the last 10 years? This equals the number of children in 10 full school buses (Parachute Canada, 2014). Some tips to keep children safe around water this summer: Supervision is key - 90% of shallow water drowning among children occurred when an adult was absent. Stay within sight and arms reach when a child is in or near water including: pools, bathtubs, lakes, rivers and streams. Put down your electronic devices; listening isnt enough to prevent drowning. Most drowning is silent and occurs in just a few seconds. ESPRIT OPPORTUNITE EXCELLENCE / OPPORTUNITY SPIRIT EXCELLENCE
Swimming lessons allow children to gain confidence around water. Remember, lessons dont provide kids with special protection; supervision is always needed. Young children and weak swimmers should wear life jackets in or around the water. You and your child should always wear life jackets when riding in a boat. Fence your pool; 7 out of 10 cases of child drowning can be prevented with four-sided pool fencing. Be prepared: get trained in water skills, swimming skills, CPR and first aid. For more information, visit www.parachutecanada.org/injury-topics/topic/C3. Tips for safe sun exposure Sun protection is important for children and youth. It only takes one bad sunburn in childhood to increase the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. Here are some sun safety tips: Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Apply sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun. Always follow label instructions. Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of skin including the nose, ears, back of neck, tops of feet etc. Reapply every 2 to 3 hours and after perspiring or swimming. Use sunscreen even on cloudy, hazy or foggy days; even in the winter. Wear loose, long sleeved shirts and pants, a large brimmed hat and sunglasses. Remember: harmful sun rays are most intense between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. When outdoors between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. ensure shade (either natural or artificial) is available for children. Indoor tanning is no safer than tanning in the sun. Playground safety tips The playground is a fun place for students. But, accidents can happen. To increase safety, teach children how to use playground equipment and play safely. You can increase safety by: removing cords and drawstrings on hoods, hats and jackets tucking in all loose clothing teaching children to be aware of moving swings and at the bottom of slides teaching children not to tie ropes to slides and other playground equipment For more information, visit Safe Kids Canada at www.safekidscanada.ca.
