ABSTRACT

The aim of this research was to know whether there is any effectiveness of
Teams Games Tournament (TGT) in teaching the students vocabulary of the eleventh
grade students of Vocational Senior High School of Pembaharuan Purworejo. The
subjects in this research were 30 of TITL TGB and 35 of TKR A students of Vocational
Senior High School of Pembaharuan Purworejo in the academic years of 2012/2013.
Before the treatment was conducted, a pre-test was administered and a post-test was
also held at the end of treatment. The procedures of applying Teams Games
Tournament are: Preparation and follow-up activities. The researcher analyzed the data
using normality test, test of homogeneity and finding t- test as hypothesis. The use of
TGT in testing the students vocabulary of the eleventh grade students of Vocational
Senior High School of Pembaharuan Purworejo in the academic year of 2012/2013 is
effective .It can be proved by the result of t-test was 2,57. Then, the researcher
consulted the critical value on the t-table using 5%(0.05) alpha level significance and the
65 degree of freedom was 1.99. The computation shows that t-value was higher than t-
table that is 2.57>1.99. Related to the result of t-test the mean score of post-test is
higher than the mean score of pre-test (80.24>71.76). It means that Teams Games
Tournament is effective in teaching the students vocabulary of the eleventh grade
Students of Vocational Senior High School Of Pembaharuan Purworejo in the academic
year of 2012/2013.

A. Introduction

Vocabulary is an important thing to support the four language skills,
which consist of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Therefore, English learners
must acquire vocabulary. Vocabulary mastery is the basic requirement in learning
English. Hornby (1995:1331) said that vocabulary is the total number of words in
language. Words are symbols for ideas. They are used by people to explain their
thoughts. Students cannot memorize well. Moreover, the teacher is expected to be
creative in front of the class when dealing which the English subject, the teacher
must give the appropriate teaching technique. As the researcher knows that so many
kinds of technique teaching can be chosen. Furthermore, before choosing one of
teaching techniques; firstly the researcher has to know the level of the students,
because the students have many kinds of characteristic in each level. In this research,
the researcher takes the students in levels of Vocational Senior High School, Who are
as elementary learners. Generally, young learners like an interesting activity. The
thesis is designed to help solving the problem of ineffectiveness of English teaching
and learning process. The researcher tries to present the teaching vocabulary by
using Teams Games Tournaments method. The researcher hopes that the students
will be interested and not be bored in studying English.

B. Method

This research is an experimental research because the writer is doing
experiment to the students to find out the result of improving English vocabulary
mastery of Vocational Senior High School students using Teams Games Tournament
(TGT) at the eleventh grade students of Vocational Senior High School of
Pembaharuan Purworejo in the academic year of 2012/2013. the researcher uses
purposive sampling in taking the sample. The reason of the researcher choosing this
sampling is because of the limitation of time. In this research, the researcher takes
two classes as the sample. They are eleventh grade students of Vocational Senior
High School of Pembaharuan Purworejo in the academic year 2012/2013.There are
30 students in the eleventh grade of TGB TITL and 35 students of TKR A. The
researcher did this research through three activities. The first activity was giving pre-
test, the second activity was conducting the treatment and the last activity was giving
post-test. This research is quantitative research, so it needs a data analysis. In this
part, the researcher applies an appropriate technique to find out the effect of both
variables of this research. The descriptive analysis is used to describe variable of this
research that is the use of TGT for improving English vocabulary mastery, the writer
also uses statistics to compute the students ability. The statistic used are the mean
analysis and standard deviation analysis. Additionally, the mean, mode, median,
standard deviation, the lowest score, and the highest score are also used to analyze
the data. In Inferential analysis, The researcher applies the statically to analyze the
data. The data analysis used is the t-test. T-test is a statistical procedure for testing
the difference between two or more means. It is used for estimating the probability
that means have been drawn from the same or different population (Sugiyono,
2007:232).
C. Research Findings

The table below is the summarized scores of Vocabulary of the control
group and experimental group

The researcher calculated the post test result of experimental group.
From the score table, the researcher concluded; the highest score of students
vocabulary ability(H) was 100, the lowest score(L) was 53, the range (R) was 47, the
median (Me) was 80 the mode (Mo) was 100, and the total score of students
vocabulary ability (T) is 2407.From the data above, the researcher finds the mean of
the data by applying the mean formula and then the researcher finds the variance
and the standard deviation of vocabulary ability of experiment group. The mean
(M) was 80.24, the deviation standard (SD) was 14.17 and the variance was
200.805.
The researcher calculated the post-test result of control group. From the
score table, it can be seen that the highest score of students vocabulary ability (H)
was 100,the lowest score (L) was 53, the range (R) was 47, the median (Me) was 73,
the mode (Mo) was 60, and the total score of students vocabulary (T) was 2517.
From the data above, the researcher tried to find the mean of the data by applying
the mean formula and then the researcher tried to find the variance and the
deviation standard of vocabulary ability of control group. The mean (M) Was 71.91
the deviation standard (SD) was 11.753 and the variance was 138.1395.
From the previous analysis, it showed that with the number of samples
(N1=30 and N2=35) and the level of significance was 5% the result of the
computation of t-value was 2.57. Based on the value in the t-table for N1=30 and
N2=35 and the significance level was 5%,the value of t-table was 1.99.The
computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table that was 2.57>1.99.
After comparing t test separated variance, and after knowing that the
hypothesis is accepted, the theory meets the fact in this case. Then, from the
computation in the previous section; the researcher concluded that there is a
significant effect of vocabulary to improve the students vocabulary ability at the
eleventh grade students of Vocational Senior High School of Pembaharuan
Purworejo in the academic year 2013.
D. Conclusion

The use of Teams Games Tournament is effective in teaching vocabulary
at the Eleventh Grade Students of Vocational Senior High School of Pembaharuan
Purworejo in the academic year of 2013. And the use of Teams Games Tournament
give a positive contribution towards the students vocabulary mastery. It can be
proved by the result of t-value was 2.57. The researcher consults the critical value
on the t-table using the 5%(0.05) alpha level significance and the degree of
freedom was 1.99. It shows that t-value was higher than t-table (2.57>1.99). It
means that the method used by the researcher is effective to improve students
vocabulary at the Eleventh Grade Students of Vocational Senior High School of
Pembaharuan Purworejo in the academic year of 2013.
Based on the analysis of the data, the testing of the hypothesis and the
discussion, the conclusion can be drawn that teaching vocabulary using Teams
Games Tournament was effective toward the students vocabulary at the Eleventh
Grade Students of Vocational Senior High School of Pembaharuan Purworejo in the
academic year of 2013.
