Level T

General Book Targets
I can read words that are from a regional or historical dialect
I can read some words from other languages
I can derive the meaning of words that reflect regional or historical dialects
as well as words from other languages
I can broaden the types of books I read

Targets about the Setting
I can read books in which I need to have content knowledge of the setting

Targets about Summarizing
I can organize important information in summary form in order to remember
them as background knowledge or for discussion and writing
I can identify significant events and tell how they are related to the problem
of the story or the solution
I can independently summarize a book*

Targets about Predicting
I can support my predictions with evidence from the book or from knowledge
of genre
I can change my predictions as new information is gathered in a book and say
why I changed my predictions with evidence from the book

Targets about Making Connections
I can make connections between the text and the other texts that have been
read or heard and demonstrate my connections in writing

Targets about Inferring and Understanding Characters
I can infer character traits, motives, and reasons for change for multiple
characters through examining how the writer describes them, what they do,
what they say and think, and what other characters say about them.
I can infer characters or subjects thinking processes and struggles at key
decision points in their lives in fictions and biographies

Targets about Analyzing a Book
I can understand the meaning of symbolism when used by a writer to create
texts, including good and evil
I can understand alternative interpretations of symbolism

Targets about Critiquing a Book
I can notice the writers choice of words that are not English and reflect on
the reasons for these choices and how those words add to the meaning of a
text
I can notice the way writers use regional dialect and discuss how it adds to
the authenticity of the text or characters
I can critique a text as an example of a genre
I can evaluate the authors use of characterization and plot (believability or
depth)
I can use other sources of information to check the authenticity of a text
I can assess whether social issues and different cultural groups are
accurately represented in a fiction or nonfiction text

Informational Text Targets
I can read books that have complex ideas and on many different topics
I can refer to details and examples in a book when explaining what the text
says*
I can determine the main ideas and explain how the key details support the
main idea*
I can describe the structure of a book (compare/contrast, cause and effect,
problem/solution)*
I can interpret information presented visually (graphs, charts, diagrams,
timelines, etc)*
I can explain how an author used reasons and evidence to support particular
