Sugar Bread
by Clydene Overbey
We didnt have much
when I was growing and certainly not a lot of sweets and
snacks. Mama didnt always
have sugar or what she
needed to bake sweets. We
had sorghum sometimes and
my grandma made the best
sorghum cakes you ever
tasted. The icing was a kind
of grayish sauce and I dont
know what they were made of,
wish now I had asked. We were
just so happy to get those
cakes now and then when we
got home from school.
Grandma didnt have recipes. If asked she would point
to her head and say its all right
here. When I watched her all I
could see is that she used her
hands and a bowl for most of
it. A pinch, a pat, a handful,
two heaping handfuls, etc.
Not much help to me.
I remember after I was married asking Grandma to write
down the recipe for a cake she
simply called white cake. Well,
she tried to put measurement
to it, but it just didnt work.
My white cake never turned
out worth a flip. It was
Grannys hands that made
those cakes, cookies, pies,
puddings, and even doughnuts. yummy! They will never
be duplicated.
One day I said, Mama
can you make us a chocolate
cake? Sorry, honey, I dont
have enough sugar. What
about pudding? Honey,
pudding has to have sugar
too. Okay, I said and just
went on about my way.
Mama had made bread that
day and she told me later that
the way I accepted no chocolate cake without a pout or a
fuss made her feel so bad.
Then she remembered
what Granny had fixed for her
and her two sisters when they
were small, sugar bread. Now
that was not real sweet bread.
Nope, she sliced a good thick
slice of her still warm bread,
laid it on a plate and sprinkled
a bit of sugar, some cinnamon,
and poured warm coffee left
from breakfast over that. She
cut it in half and called
Norman and me in. When she
put that sugar bread in front
of us we tasted it and you

would have thought it was a

big hunk of chocolate cake.
Grandma had fixed it for her
and she in turn fixed it for us.
Oh what a treat that was. Just
a teaspoon or so of sugar and
we had our sweet treat. I fixed
it as often as I could for my
son, Richard, too and he loved
it. Well, Ive got fresh bread
in the kitchen right now. So
guess what Im gonna have
after while?
Romans 8:1-39 There is
therefore now no condemnation for those who are in
Christ Jesus. For the law of
the Spirit of life has set you
free in Christ Jesus from the
law of sin and death. For God
has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not
do. By sending his own Son
in the likeness of sinful flesh
and for sin, he condemned sin
in the flesh, in order that the
righteous requirement of the
law might be fulfilled in us,
who walk not according to
the flesh but according to the
Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their
minds on the things of the
flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their
minds on the things of the
Spirit.

As we roll through the

spring months on a collision
course for summer, we continue to see many gardening
problems happening throughout the county.
Most issues are derivative
of insects, fungus, bacteria, or
nutrient deficiency but many
of these problems can be remedied with appropriate game
plans.
The Extension Service will
host a special session for experienced gardeners to help
with insect identification and

control, assist to recognize

diseased vegetables, and solutions to remedy other issues
within the garden.
We encourage guests to
bring their gardening problems and questions, diseased
plants, problematic bugs, and
any soil samples that need to
be looked at.
There will be two educational sessions: one session
will be at Charleston Community Center on Thursday, July
3, at 10 a.m., and the second
session will be held later that
day at the Ozark Extension
office at 1 p.m.

Liberty News

This Sunday it did not rain

and its been warm.
We attended church today
and there were several absent. I guess several were taking a break now school is out.
My daughter, Sandra,
came for a while Saturday. She
and I visited a short while at
Jerrys house with Donna and
saw their beautiful garden.
Jerry was mowing hay here at
my house. He brought one of
his cabbages over and it
weighed 18 pounds. Ill make
kraut Monday. My corn is
coming off and we had some
for dinner today. It sure tasted
good. The beans need picking and boy does the grass
and weeds grow.
I had a call today from Virginia. They were getting rain
today.
I had damage from lightning the other evening. It was
bad. They are sending a replacement for my damage.
The electricity was out for a
couple of hours and the
house got hot.
One of my neighbors had
minor damage to her lights.
I have four baby kittens,
one snow white, a calico and
two dark brown. They are living on the porch with their
mother to keep away from
stray dogs.

My yard was mowed Saturday and should last for a

week. I have all my plants out
of the greenhouse letting them
get rain.
Randy came over for a
while and he and Scott talked
cars.
Everyone is gone but me
and my dog and the cats.
Everyone seems to have
plenty of green beans to eat. I
love living off those good
home-raised vegetables. The
tomatoes are coming along. It
is a relief to not have to run to
the grocery store so often.
I must get busy while I
have helpers.
Bless everyone.

River Float/-Earthquake
Ridge Trail airs Monday, July
7, at 6:30 p.m.
The deepest canyon in the
Ozarks, south of Jasper, is
nicknamed Arkansass
Grand Canyon. Its been visited by millions of travelers
since 1955 - including Harry
and Bess Truman and Bill
Clinton, who used the beauty
of Scenic Byway 7 to propose
to Hillary.
The Mulberry River in
Northwest Arkansas was officially designated in 1985 by
the state legislature as a Wild
and Scenic River. A float trip
down it is definitely that!
Earthquake Ridge Trail
north of Mena is a great hiking and mountain biking trail
that parallels the Talimena
Scenic Byway and is named
not because of an earthquake
but after a rock crevice nearby
the trail.
