The Art of Photography Shows
International Exhibition Opens
September 29, 2012
at SDAIs Museum of the Living Artist
The Art of Photography Shows International Exhibition,
now in its eighth year, will be opening September 29th
at the San Diego Art Institutes Museum of the Living
Artist in Balboa Park. The founder and producer, Steven
Churchill, and the Executive Director of SDAI, Tim Field,
have joined forces to see this exhibition raise the bar on
international art shows.
The Art of Photography Show is an established and critical
force in the world of contemporary photography. The show
provides tangible benets to artists trying to break into the
public eye. The International Exhibition provides value to
artists at every turn, from rst-rate viewing in the judging
process to exhibition and publication opportunities, photo
industry connections, and even monetary awards.
The producer of the Art of Photography Show, Steven
Churchill, is dedicated to providing exposure to new
and emerging artists, and has done so with great effect;
last years viewing audience exceeded 30,000 people.
The diversity and draw of last years competition was
astounding, with entries from 72 countries.
For photographers, the distinguishing feature of this
competition is its notable jurors. Each year the Art
of Photography Show invites a curator from a major
museum to jury the show. This years juror is Julian Cox,
the Founding Curator of Photography and Chief Curator
at the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
Selected works will be on exhibit for a full six weeks at
SDAIs Museum of the Living Artist. On September 29th
the exhibition will debut with an opening gala that will
draw over 1,500 guests, bringing elite attendees, including
art collectors, curators, designers, architects, executives,
civic and government leaders, not to mention the stars of
the show the artists.

abstract - to pull away / express - to push forth
Solo Show SDAI:MOLA June 8 to July 15, 2012

Contemporary charcoal drawing - vine charcoal, charkole, compressed charcoal, loose
charcoal, homemade charcoal, erasers, shammies, put on, wipe down, erase, scratch,
re-apply, take away, rhythm, marks, music. Add in gesso wash, ink wash, more charcoal,
take away, add more, push-pull, give/take, nd an image, erase an image, add an idea,
scribble over an area, respond to the process, having faith in doubt, guring it out.
Complicate/Simplify, large drawings, small paintings. Shapes, lines, color, form,
abstraction, realism, push-pull....
Im lucky to spend a good part of the year in Hawaii. Traveling back and forth, from island
to mainland, is its own form of push-pull. Both here and there, I enjoy scavenging during
beach walks. Picking up kukui nuts, leaves, pods, burlap, branches, coconuts, owers,
string, what I nd left behind, I bring to the studio. I use them to draw, from observation,
to look at and look away, to use or not use, for different works
of art. I nd the calm and the battle in the studio, wherever
I am...
Three of the large works were created in Hawaii, the others,
here in San Diego. The charcoal drawing, a new experience,
a response to the organic feeling of island life. The small
paintings, created in San Diego, an exploration inspired also
by the principles of abex and the shapes and textures found
in nature.

Figurative Explorations:
Drawings and Paintings
Solo Show SDAI:MOLA June 8 to July 15, 2012
The gure in a variety of expressions, media, and formats has long been an ongoing
interest for me, since my student days. The subject is endlessly fascinating and variable
and gives me the opportunity to use it to portray, reect, suggest, imagine the human
beings we are, could be, might have been, think we are, want to be.
Recently I have been exploring ways of connecting gurative elements with abstract or
nonobjective principles by focusing on color, line, shape, pattern, texture, composition.
I hope to show something about the subject rather than represent it in an exact way. My
drawings frequently use exaggeration to portray a feeling or mood.
Over the last few years I have done several series of gurative drawings and paintings with
different focuses: Seated Figure Series, Abstract Figure Series, Deconstructed
Figure Series, Double/Multiple Exposure Series, Fault Lines. For this show, I am
choosing to show both drawings and paintings from these series, focusing on the gure
in a range of media on paper: charcoal, pencil, crayon, collage, watermedia, acrylic.
