SCIENCE UNIT Earthquakes

Brayden: Brayden understands both the basics and more complex issues
relating to earthquakes, such as the grading of the Richter Scale and that the
location of the quake is directly related to the extent of the disaster caused.
Brayden showed interest in the visual and practical elements of the unit, but
required much encouragement to apply his learned knowledge in writing. C-
Stephanie: Stephy has a comprehensive understanding of the layers that
constitute the Earths surface and how this relates to the occurrence of
earthquakes. Stephy has engaged with the unit with curiousity and
enthusiasm, though did miss some lessons towards the end of Term 2 that
covered the location and impact of earthquakes. B
Amy: Amy has an excellent learned knowledge of earthquakes and is able to
articulate this in both writing and through diagrams. Amy understands the
relationship between tectonics plates and natural disasters and has detailed
knowledge of plate movement. Amy missed a lesson and therefore was not
able to provide much detail on the layers that constitute the earths surface.
B+
Em: engaged well with aspects of the unit and is able to explain simply the
core causes and consequences of earthquakes. With assistance, Em extended
herself to apply her learned knowledge in scenario based situations such as
how an earthquake would impact Launceston. Ems presentation of the
tectonic plates in the earths crust was great. B
Caleb: Caleb understands the impact of earthquakes on the earth. He has a
working understanding of what happens within the earths surface and how
this impacts life on earth. Caleb can use scientific language such as magnitude
effectively in a sentence and enjoys engaging with the creative aspects of
science. B-
Casey: Caseys written work indicates that he has a basic concept of the earths
composition and how this effects life on earth. As Casey completes his work
quickly, his work can lack detail and care in spelling. Casey embraced the
practical elements of this unit when working with models and displays. C
Hayden: has a comprehensive understanding of how the composition of the
earth impacts the world we live in. Hayden can articulate the complexity of
tectonic plate location and movement, as well as the consequences of
earthquakes. Hayden occasionally did not stay on task and this impacted the
detail he applied to some aspects of the unit. B
Sarah: Sarah applied herself conscientiously to all aspects of the earthquake
unit. Her book work shows great care in presentation. Sarah can
communicate in detail how changes in earths surface impact life on earth and
uses excellent scientific vocabulary. B+
Jake: Jake has an excellent understanding of the earths composition and how
this impacts the world we live in. Jake uses sophisticated earthquake
language, can describe in detail where and why earthquakes occur and has
detailed knowledge of the scale of earthquakes. B+
Lachie: Lachie came into the earthquake unit with great existing knowledge of
the nature and impact of earthquakes. He has built on this knowledge to be
able to describe in excellent detail, through both words and diagram, the
composition of the earth and how movements with the earths surface impact
our lives. Lachie showed great listening skills in his ability to recall specific
information in this unit. A-
Wegihu: With encouragement, Wegihu demonstrated he had a basic
understanding of the composition of the earth particularly when describing the
difference between the earths layers. Wegihu completed his assessment task
quickly and it was pleasing to see him go back and revise the task with
additional detail. C+
Kiana: Kiana showed a basic understanding of the earths composition and
impact of earthquakes. Kianas responses to the assessment task were brief
and indicated she missed important factual knowledge. Kiana needs to
develop the ability to focus. C
Massimo: was attentive and participated actively in the earthquake unit. He
effectively applied scientific vocabulary in his written work and showed an
ability to apply scientific information to real-life scenarios. Massimo has the
capacity to apply even more detail to his written work. B
Will: Will was an enthusiastic participant in the practical elements of the
earthquake unit. Will understands the basic concepts associated with the
earths composition but has occasional trouble applying these scientific terms
in context. C
