As we move into the rst full
month of summer, we can reect
on the joys of the previous season.
School is out and high school
and college graduates (and their
parents) should be proud of
themselves. We certainly are! We
wish you all great success in the
next stage of your lives.
At FGCU, the baseball, softball
and other springs sports had
exciting seasons, while the fall and
winter sports are already working
to put together their rosters and
game schedules. We are in full
swing of the major league baseball
season and most of us are rooting
for our favorite teams, including
our local favorite, the Fort Myers
Miracle.
Its time to relax a little and take
pleasure in our favorite summer
activities, while attempting to
avoid the heat! Savoring the Estero
lifestyle will be a little easier
since it is slightly less crowded. We
can take advantage of the shops,
restaurants and usual tourist
destinations at a more leisurely
pace.
To that end, we recently
explored the Estero River via
a guided, historical kayak tour
available through the College of
Life Foundation/Koreshan Park.
Learn about the beauty and
history of this waterway in this
months issue.
This month read about the
current and incoming Chairmen of
the Estero Chamber of Commerce.
Tremendous business growth, a
viable Visitors Center, and targeted
monthly events are all part of the
maturing of this vital organization
in our community. We feel they
are certainly moving in the right
direction.
We would also like to introduce
you to Estero resident and
entrepreneur, Trish Leonard,
owner of TLC Marketing &
Creative Services. For businesses,
organizations or individuals
planning a party or event, Trish and
her company will take care of every
detail. This month we take a look
at her community involvement and
some of the events that are planned
for our area.
This months Dining features
A Passage to India, a 22-year local
favorite in SW Florida. The care
and attention needed to present
the intricacies of Indian cuisine will
amaze you. Read about what makes
this family effort so special.
Let me call your attention to a
special Happening at Pagellis
at Coconut Point in Estero. This
4-course wine dinner and auction

year having Memorial Day followed
by the highly emotional events
surrounding the 70th anniversary
remembrance of D-Day, we barely
have time to recover emotionally in
time for the 238th celebration of this
great country. I wish you all a safe
and happy 4th of July. I encourage
you to take a few minutes from
the myriad of activities to stop and
reect on how fortunate we all are.

TRISH LEONARD:
TLC MARKETING &
CREATIVE SERVICES
BY LAURA J. CUMMINGS GATES
W
hen planning an event, Trish Leonard
takes things one step at a time only
she moves backwards.
In my mind, I always envision how I
see the event ending, says the ultimate
party planner. Then I go back from there.
While Leonard has long used her creative talents to add
air to festive occasions, its now an ofcial part of her
business. TLC Marketing & Creative Services doesnt just
promote events, the company will plan every detail, down
to the centerpieces, lighting, music, menu and mood.
Im proud when the organization is successful, when
they exceed their goal and they get the recognition when
a plan comes together, explains the community-minded
Leonard.
She sits on numerous local boards, which speak to
her personal passions of art, nature and helping small
businesses. She recently resigned from her position as
marketing director for Florida Gulf Coast Universitys
Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to expand
her efforts with TLC, although shell continue as the
SBDCs special events coordinator.
I love the university, Leonard says. I just dont get as
creative when Im behind walls.
Her most inspiring moments occur along the banks of
the Imperial River, where longtime beau and former Bonita
Springs City Manager Gary Price owns a home. Leonard
retreats there on Sundays, tending a garden and growing
an array of fresh veggies to bring to the table.
Gardening helps me meditate, she says.
The expansive backyard with a riverfront view and
bamboo-shaded dock has been the site of many festive
gatherings over the years. In April, Leonard and Price
hosted a fundraiser for the Everglades Wonder Gardens
at the historic venue, raising $5,000.
Thats a piece of history; you cant just turn it into
condos, says Leonard, who recently joined the board of
a 501(c)3 to save the Wonder Gardens.
Shes planning a much grander event at the gardens on
Jan. 31, 2015: The Eyeball Soire. It will benet another
newly discovered cause the Bonita Springs Lions Eye
Clinic. Leonard is on the clinics board and recently
designed a logo to help raise awareness about this little
known philanthropic agency. Her goal is to raise $50,000
for the clinic through a one-of-a-kind gala, with lights,
music, food and festivities spread throughout the lush
natural setting of the Wonder Gardens.
Another gala is planned at the Prado Cinema Cafe in
November, the site of the rst Bonita Springs Film Fest,
featuring short lms shot on location at Bonita Nature
Place.
If you have a lm fest, you have to have a gala, Leonard
says.
If that werent enough to keep her busy, Leonard
also sits on boards for the Southwest Florida Speakers
Assembly, Center for the Arts of Bonita Springs, European
American Network and Leadership Bonita.
Being a charitable giver is just part of my DNA, she
says.
Leonard was the mastermind behind two highly
successful fundraisers which have now gone beyond
Southwest Florida: the PACE Center for Girls Love that
Dress! and Ronald McDonald House Charities Pennies
from the Heart. More recently, she themed up the Estero
Chamber of Commerces rst membership drive as a
hoedown, and she chairs the chambers Business After
Hours.
She is highly organized and dedicated to providing
a memorable evening for our members, said Chamber
President Debi Montenieri, as a testimonial for TLC.
Leonard recently joined the International Special
Events Society and has invested about $2,000 to build her
inventory of table linens and beroptic centerpieces, which
she christened at the SBDCs Distinguished Entrepreneur
Dinner last month.
I like marketing, I like PR, but my love is really on the
event planning side, Leonard says. Events are simple to
me; they come very naturally and organically.
She even has been known to work magic in a matter of
hours. When rain spoiled outdoor wedding plans for Bobby
and Arleen Hunter, Leonard sprang to action to turn the
stark Lions Club into an English garden.
You transformed a meeting room into an enchanted
venue, the grateful bride told Leonard.
Leonard says she wishes more people realized how
much stress, time and even money can be saved by hiring
an event planner.
You dont have to spend a lot, she says. Its just how
creative you can be.
Of course, her dream would be to plan a huge event
with no budget limitations and top off the fantasy with
a personal interview with Martha Stewart.
She is my biggest inspiration and an absolute genius,
Leonard says.

chairman Gene Montenieri
ESTEROLIFESTYLEMAG.COM | JULY 2014 15
LEADING THE WAY FOR BUSINESS:
ESTERO CHAMBER
OF COMMERCE
BY LAURA J. CUMMINGS GATES
I
n a little more than a year, the Estero Chamber of
Commerce has added 100 members, doubled its
events and opened a visitor center.
With the uptick in economic activity, more
businesses are seeing the value of belonging to
the chamber. What once was viewed as a political action
committee has become more relevant to local business
operators. Current membership is at 254.
The membership increase has been dramatic, says
incoming President Jeff Maas. So much has been added
in a year and a half.
Bruce and Darlene Vanderveen joined the Estero
Chamber a little over a year ago and now regularly attend
breakfast, lunch and after hours events.
I think the Estero Chamber is valuable, Bruce
Vanderveen says. Our business has grown. Contacts were
made that I couldnt have made otherwise without being
in the chamber.
Not only has the chamber added Lunch and Learn and
Rise and Shine events to the monthly calendar, it has
revamped its website with links to community planning
and other governmental agencies.
Weve done a lot of things with businesses in mind,
says Gene Montenieri, who stepped into the newly created
chairman role one year ago. Its not just networking; its
educational.
Montenieri serves as a volunteer, putting in more than
90 hours a month while running his own distribution
company. His wife, Debi, is handing the presidents role
to Maas this month, having served on the chamber board
for the last decade.
This is the most giving group of people Ive ever seen,
Gene says of the all-volunteer board. He represents the
chamber at meetings of several economic councils and
civic groups: We try to get everywhere and meet with
everyone.
The chamber has a seat at the Bonita Springs Estero
Economic Development Council, although relationships
with Esteros neighbor to the south have been strained
by Esteros incorporation push and Bonitas recent
annexations.
I think once the incorporation issue is settled, things
will improve, Montenieri says.
Anyone who thinks any community can survive by
itself is mistaken, adds Maas, a longtime member of the
development community. There has to be a regional
approach taken to the marketing of areas and businesses
in those areas. There has to be collaboration between
chambers and between cities.
As Estero heads toward the likely outcome of cityhood,
the chamber aims to be a central voice in its formation.
We certainly want to have involvement within that
government to make sure businesses can be heard and
have a voice in the Village of Estero, Maas says.
Businesses dont get to vote, but they are the drivers
of the economy, he adds. And although Hertz, Walmart
and the shopping malls might get most of the press, its
small businesses that are the engine for job creation and
economic growth in local communities.
To that end, the chamber brings in relevant speakers to
help small businesses succeed. Topics have included taxes,
accounting, ood insurance, networking, e-marketing and
web design.
We dont just bring in county or state ofcials, Maas
said of the Lunch and Learn speakers. We try to make
these things applicable. We want to make sure the needs
of small businesses are met.
Other goals for the chamber include developing a
stronger relationship with Florida Gulf Coast University.
We want to reach out to FGCU to get them more
involved in the Estero community, Maas says. Theyve
been so close to us, and the involvement has been more
ancillary than anything else.
Hed like to see FGCU representatives at chamber
gatherings and community meetings. The chamber also
hopes to partner with the university for a student intern
program.
There are many businesses in Estero that could use
interns and part-time work, Maas says.
The chamber itself might benet from an intern to help
with marketing and web design, he adds. Volunteers also
could be used at the newly opened Visitors Center, which
is located at 9351 Corkscrew Road and is manned from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.
Weve gotten into so many new things and started new
committees, Montenieri says. We do a terrible job telling
people what a good organization we are, and were going
to get better at that.

EXPERIENCE ESTERO:
HISTORICAL KAYAKING
ALONG THE ESTERO RIVER
BY LAURA J. CUMMINGS GATES
DINING FEATURE
S
hiny water beetles dance in the sunlight,
skimming the waters surface as my paddle
slices through the Estero River. Its a lovely
Saturday morning, with a rustling breeze and
plenty of sunshine, ideal for kayaking.
The shoreline is lush with native and exotic vegetation,
thanks to the Koreshan Unity, a religious sect which
brought civilization and exotic plants to Estero in the
1890s. Above the spider-like root system of the mangroves,
towering bamboo gives an eerily hollow clank with each
gust of wind.
The occasional water bird greets us with curiosity,
taking in our brightly colored kayaks and the awkward
strokes of the novice paddlers among us. Estero River not
only embodies nature and history, its an ideal place for
paddling newbies, with its narrow, tree-lined waterway.
As we glide along the surface, breathing in nature, its
hard to imagine we are helping to tear down invisible
fences, which have existed for half a century between
historical preservation groups.
Our kayaking adventure is courtesy of the College
of Life Foundation, which was originally founded by
Koreshan Unity member Hedwig Michel as the Koreshan
Unity Foundation. She was among the last four surviving
Koreshans who agreed to donate their 300-acre commune
to the state in 1961, creating the Koreshan State Historic
Site. However, Michel fell into disagreement with the parks
management, so she opened a competing foundation,
taking much of the Koreshans wealth and artifacts
with her, explains master naturalist and College of Life
caption
16 JULY 2014 | ESTEROLIFESTYLEMAG.COM
Secretary/Treasurer Peg Egan.
The feud continued after Michels death, when her
successor, Jo Bigelow, sold Koreshan land for the
development of Pelican Sound Golf and River Club and
refused to share proceeds with the Friends of Koreshan
State Historic Site to help pay for building preservation.
Current College of Life Chairman Charles Dauray has
been more generous with the foundations resources
in recent years donating two historic buildings to the
Estero Historical Society and paying for their relocation
to Estero Community Park but has still been criticized
by the estranged sibling foundation for lack of generosity
to Koreshan State Park.
All this is changing, thanks to Egans simple idea of
running historical kayaking tours along the banks of the
former Koreshan colony.
Everybody has embraced the concept of doing a
Koreshan tour on the river, Egan says. Its a huge asset
that has not been utilized.
Egan now sits on the Friends of Koreshan board a
giant step toward tearing down partitions.
Were excited to pull these groups together as they
should be, keeping in the spirit of Koreshanity, says
Park Services Specialist Mike Heare, who has welcomed
a variety of new activities to the park in recent years,
spurring record attendance levels. Koreshan is Estero.
This fall, the partnership will continue strengthening as
the state park intends to give College of Life Foundation
exclusive rights to operate a camp store and paddling
rentals, Heare says. The long-term goal is a separate boat
launch area for canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards,
apart from motorized boats, Egan adds.
Historical kayaking has been so popular, Egan
convinced longtime kayaking buddy Brandy Minchew to
relocate from Georgia to help run tours. Both are trained
by the American Canoe Association and in rst aid and
CPR. Although we felt safe in the stable sea kayaks and
shallow river basin, its comforting to know our guides are
prepared to do a water rescue if needed.
As naturalists, Egan and Minchew point out many
interesting plants, including Resurrection Fern, which
turns brown and shrivels without water but resurrects a
brilliant, perky green after a good rain.
Theres also perseverance palm, so dubbed by Egan
because this lone palm greedily stretched its way out to
the sunlight right into the middle of the waterway, creating
an eye-catching (and perhaps eye-poking) scene for
kayakers as they paddle around its reach.
Then theres the regions lone monkey puzzle tree,
towering far above the other foliage, an exotic from
the Chile/Argentina region producing oversized cones,
undoubtedly planted by the Koreshans.
While enjoying natural beauty is the reason most people
choose to go kayaking, this tour adds another dimension.
In keeping with the foundations mission, its also a lesson
on the historical contributions of the Koreshan Unity.

18 JULY 2014 | ESTEROLIFESTYLEMAG.COM
Founded by Cyrus Teed in 1894, Estero was to be a
New Jerusalem for his followers, who believed and
set out to prove the universe existed inside a hollow
sphere. He claimed revelation from an angelic visitation
and attracted about 250 followers before his untimely
death from a ght with the county sheriff in 1908.
The Koreshans were largely responsible for bringing
industry and culture to Estero, operating an art hall,
bakery, machine shop and post ofce. But with leaders
vowing celibacy, the sect did not last long after Teeds
death.
With U.S. 41 being merely a cow path in those days,
the main entrance to the colony was by water. As we
paddled past Bamboo Landing, Egan explained how
the Koreshans used the landing to import materials and
export goods.
Other historically noteworthy stops include the
picturesque Boomer estate, which will become part of
the historic sites holdings upon Nola Boomers death.
Her husband was the grandson of Berthaldine Boomer,
an original member of the Koreshan Unitys Planetary
Court.
I love to tell people about our local history and how
amazing it is, Minchew says. Its the nations history,
too, and it goes along with the College of Lifes mission
to preserve history and educate about the environment.
Egan and Minchew also run tours to Mound Key,
another former Koreshan property, with history
dating back to the Calusa Indian empire. For more
information on kayaking and hiking tours, contact

PASSAGE TO INDIA
INDIAN CUISINE WITH A BENGALI FLARE
BY LAURA J. CUMMINGS GATES
B
orhan Ahmed didnt plan to open a restaurant
when he immigrated from Bangladesh in
1987. He came to study engineering. But
he missed the avors of India and decided
to embrace his passion for food and cooking.
He set out to make authentic dishes, just like his mama
and grannie. Hes now been in business in Southwest
Florida for 22 years. Its a family affair with Borhan
running the kitchen, his wife as hostess and all four of his
children serving tables or pitching in behind the scenes.
I am head chef, side chef, sous chef, everything,
Borhan says. Its been that way since the beginning.
Four or ve hours before the restaurant opens for
dinner, Borhan is hard at work making dough for Nan, a
traditional Indian bread cooked in an extremely hot clay
oven called a Tandoori. The pita-like Nan can be enjoyed
fresh from the oven or lled with a variety of ingredients
to make it sweet or savory. Keema Nan is lled with
ground lamb while Sweet Nan is lled with raisins, nuts
and coconut.
Spices used in Indian cuisine include turmeric, cumin
and paprika, which give most dishes a brilliant red color.
Like all good chefs, Borhan has his own curry recipe, along
with four or ve other sauces. He uses traditional Indian
spices, but his dishes have a Bengali are, since spices are
incorporated a bit differently in Bangladesh, making the
texture and avor unique from traditional Indian cuisine.
Borhan generally makes his dishes mild, but will pour
on the heat as requested. The hottest sauce is Vindaloo,
made with Jamaican Scotch Bonnet peppers, famous for
their ery intensity.
Elephants and peacock feathers adorn the dining room
at Passage to India, with imported sequence tablecloths
glistening under the chandeliers. We started our Central
Asian dining adventure with a traditional mango lassi
(similar to a mango milkshake) and some Indian beer,
setting the stage for an uncommon culinary experience.
Passage to India offers unique and avorful food, which
transports diners across the globe for a break from the
ordinary.

01. APPETIZERS/ SAMOSA & PAKURA
We started with the Mixed Appetizer, offering a sampling
of Bengali starters. The Samosa is a crisp, fried pastry
turnover lled with potatoes and peas. Pakura can be
either meat (we tried chicken) or vegetables mixed
with Indian spices and deep-fried. Rounding out the
appetizer was Onion Bhaji, similar to the Pakura but
starring thick slices of onion. All appetizers are served
with three sauces: a hot and spicy green mint sauce,
sweet and earthy tamarind sauce and a fresh onion
chutney.
02. CHICKEN TANDOORI
Tandoori specialties are cooked in the traditional clay
oven and served with fresh Nan bread and Raitha, a
homemade yogurt sauce seasoned with nely diced
cucumber. The Chicken Tandoori is Indian barbecue,
with chicken marinated overnight in yogurt and Indian
spices. It comes out sizzling, with a steamy, tantalizing
aroma inviting you to dive into this avorful meal.
03. SHRIMP TIKKA MASALA
Cumin and paprika give this dish eye-popping appeal.
Tikka Masala features any kind of boneless meat
shrimp, chicken, lamb or sh grilled in the tandoori
oven and cooked in a rich, yogurt-based tandoori sauce.
Use the basmati rice to soak up all that super sauce.
04. BIRYANI
Biryani specialties are prepared with mild yet avorful
spices like ginger, garlic, coriander and cumin, mixed in
a sauce with almonds, raisins and coconut. It all coats
the basmati rice for a festive appearance. In Bangladesh,
this is a party dish, traditionally reserved for celebrating
special occasions. Try Biryani with vegetables, chicken,
lamb, shrimp or chicken or a combination of meats and
vegetables.
05. GROUPER CURRY
No Indian culinary experience is complete without curry.
We tried grouper in Chef Borhans signature curry sauce, a
perfect complement to the fresh catch. The avorful dish is
served with Pillau Basmati Rice for enjoying the ample curry
sauce. Other seafood dishes include Shrimp Dansak, with
lentils, and Shrimp Korma, cooked in a creamy mushroom
sauce. Also try the curry with salmon, sea bass or snapper.
06. DESSERT/ RICE PUDDING &
GULAB JAMUN
Creamy rice pudding is a sweet way to end a meal at
Passage to India. This traditional Indian dessert is mild
and melts in your mouth. Borhan also makes his own
mango and coconut ice cream, as well as Indias version
of doughnuts: Gulab Jamun. This honey ball is heavy with
gooey goodness and served in extra honey sauce for ending
on a sweet note.
