The p)rpose of this doc)!ent is to e$plain ho? layered cell str)ct)res are

technology o(er se(eral years and since 122% it has /een tested in real syste!s in !)ltiple

e$perience. The original @ soft?are prod)ct has /een !odelled and opti!ised thro)gh this
e$perience and se(eral ne? feat)res ha(e /een added.
4n 122&A operators started to deploy layered technology as a sol)tion for their capacity

?ishes of the operatorsB the Motorola Layered Technology has addressed these needs.
Motorola Technology pro(ides the operator ?ith fle$i/ility to cope ?ith specific
pro/le!s and is designed to /e easy to i!ple!ent and opti!ise. A range of specific Motorola
tools are a(aila/le for the planningA opti!isation and control of !)lti-layer en(iron!ents.

4n the initial steps of a con(entional cell)lar net?orCA deploy!ents are i!ple!ented to
pro(ide co(erage o(er a ?ide geographical area. 4t is ad(antageo)s for the operator to !aCe

The density of s)/scri/ers s)pported is a f)nction of freD)ency allocationA freD)ency

traffic reD)ire!ents increaseA operators are reD)ired to red)ce cell siEe to increase capacity.
This is a typical sit)ation in a large )r/an area. 4nitially the capacity increase is achie(ed
thro)gh sectorisation and then thro)gh Fcell splittingF *sites ?ith red)ced co(erage+. This

conseD)ence of the diffic)lties to predict the propagation patterns. Macrocells cannot pro(ide
the co(erage and capacity perfor!ance reD)ired /y the f)t)re cell)lar net?orCs.
As capacity reD)ire!ents increase ?ithin digital cell)lar net?orCsA cell siEes are

reached ?hen the a(aila/le freD)ency reso)rce and the physical location of eD)ip!ent li!its
?hat can /e achie(ed ?ith traditional cell planning techniD)es.
Additional cells are also deployed to !eet increased co(erage needsA partic)larly as
the )se of handporta/les increases the e$pectation of the s)/scri/er and e$tends the areas of
cell)lar operations to ?ithin /)ildings. Altho)gh !acrocells can /e )sed to pro(ide in-

;plinC and do?nlinC !eas)re!ents are transferred to the HDPC at the end of e(ery

the trans!ission of the do?nlinC data fro! de M to the @T.
