POINTS TO BE INCLUDED IN INTRODUCTION

OF A RESEARCH THESIS

A good formula for you introduction is to put the issue in context as concisely as possible. Thesis
introduction is the theoretical explanation of the purpose of a certain topic investigation. That is
why, when writing thesis introduction, one should know the rules of writing a thesis
introduction. What should be included into thesis introductions? What should be omitted? What
should you avoid when writing a thesis introduction? Your introduction sets the tone for your
research and provides the reader with a first impression of your writing and your thesis. So,
a thesis introduction is the foundation of your thesis project, and that is why you should make it
firm.

The introduction chapter of your thesisshould include the followings;
1. Explain why the subject was chosen for study.
2. Statement of the thesis problem
Is there a problem?
What is the problem you are going to discuss in your thesis?
Why does the problem need to be solved?
3. Brief overview of the thesis study.
4. Discussion about the significance of your study.
5. Objectives for your thesis writing
6. Touch on the relevant literature and showing how this has informed the research issue.
7. Explain briefly how the research has been designed and why the research methods, being
usedhave been chosen.
8. Description of the various thesis chapters.
9. Define an abstract or special term used in your thesis.
10. Inform your reader of the various aspects of your topic other than the one you have
chosen.
11. Give pertinent anecdote that provides a direct means of leading into your topic.
12. What is your hypothesis?
13. Who will benefit from your investigation?
In what sense will they benefit?
In what sense will my contribution add to what is already known?
14. How in general terms are you going to solve the problem?
15. What are the constraints or limitations of the study?

In the start of your introduction you have to answer the question why this particular subject is
chosen by you, what are the facts that lead you to this specific context of issue. Your answer
should be precise and satisfactory that solves all the queries, which comes to the mind of readers.
Explain why the topic chosen is relevant and why the problem is burning. Your presentation of
the topic under investigation may be one sentence or a paragraph long. The main thing is that
you should answer the question why did I make up my mind to investigate this very topic?

The next section of the thesis introduction section is a statement of the problem your thesis
addresses. You are showing the reader whether there is a problem or not. In this section of the
introductory chapter of the thesis tell the reader what major problems your thesis will address
and how your thesis will fill any research gaps. Through writing, show the reader why your
thesis matters and how it might help the field. Why does there is a need to solve this problem is
that become inevitable or the solution will help the other issues as well. You should state the
problem you are going to deal with in a clear way. However, this is impossible to do it if not
proving the relevance of problem and giving reasons for its solution. That is why while writing a
thesis introduction, state the importance of the problem you are going to deal with and offer
some definite and concrete ways of its solution.

Next, provide a brief overview of the thesis study for the reader. More specifically, in the
introduction section of your thesis you should briefly summarize your major thesis research
questions, don't go into great detail here.
In the next section of thesis introduction chapter one should discuss the significance of thesis
chapter. In this section of the introductory chapter of the thesis one should briefly write about the
thesis importance and how the thesis findings might be applied to some problem or issue. In this
section of thesis introduction chapter, tell the reader why your thesis is special. This section will
help the reader understand the thesis's significance.
Apart from presenting the subject of your thesis, you have also to name the objectives for your
thesis writing. Being a theoretical explanation of the fact of researching this very topic, your
introduction should also contain the information, which answers whether this very topic is
widely researched in scientific literature or there exist some definite gaps, which should be filled
in with the help of this very study you make in your thesis.
Write statements that provide general background information about your thesis in the
introduction. Use information that may generally be common knowledge but that clarifies the
subject of the thesis. These statements provide a point of reference for the reader to help him
understand the thesis.
The very next you have to inform the reader how you have designed the research and what
scientific methods you have applied. It is extremely important to present the methods you are
going to use while your investigation, such as observations, questionnaires, interviews, etc.
Consulting the tutor, what methods would be the most helpful for investigating this particular
topic, would definitely help a lot. The methods are the means of achieving the results, so, think
of the best means of succeeding.
In next thesis introduction section briefly tell the reader what is in the thesis chapters that follow.
Tell them what is in chapter one through the concluding thesis chapter. Here, you provide the
reader with a road map.
Grab the reader's attention with a fact, question, quote, analogy or short, interesting narrative
supporting the thesis. This should set the tone for your thesis while triggering the reader's interest
in the subject. Spend time and effort on this part of the introduction, because it may be the key in
convincing the reader to read further.
The next step will enhance the understanding capacity of reader as well it will build up the
praising impression in readers mind, that instead of just focusing on your concerned problem
area you have covered the other aspects of this study as well.
A little bit information about the theoretical framework of your study would be enough because
it is the main part of your thesis so reader would take a glance of what you are going to do in
your next chapters.
Identifying the problem and then suggesting the best possible solution will ultimately lead you to
this question that, who will benefit from your findings and in thesis introduction you have to
describe this very considering piece of information.
Reader will definitely wants to know this, how will you solve this specific issue or what
measures you will adapt to reach the destination so you will provide information about data
collection and its analysis but in a very brief manner.
Limitations aids the further research, it will provide the reader that what aspects are not being
covered by you due to some hazards. Limitations should be in a minimum number and their
concise description should be made in thesis introduction.
A good way to end the introduction is to state the thesis objectives. Don't forget that this is a
SHORT intro for your reader to the subject, to put the issue in context. The background and
history will be dealt with elsewhere.Avoid using jargon in the introduction and keep your
language a little more simple than in the following chapters. Also, dont clutter up your
introduction with citations this should not be necessary as this is your summary of the study.
Throughout the introduction, state the main points that your thesis will cover without going into
detail. These points provide further framework and organization clues for the reader that help
him understand your thesis as he reads it. They also provoke questions in the reader's mind,
causing him to want to read further. Whatever your approach, your introduction should be
relevant; it should gain the immediate attention of your reader, and it should clarify your thesis in
some way.
