though you used to be slaves to sin, you

pattern of teaching that has now claimed
your allegiance.

quickly after my mom or dad got home. Freedom
was a privilege; freedom had responsibility;
freedom was not given but earned through blood,
sweat, and tears. There was a great responsibility
that came with having freedom. Freedom meant
that it was up to me to do what was right. It
wasnt that I had to or that I was forced to;
freedom gave me the choice to do what was right
and what needed to be done. Everything that I
did out of freedom I did of my own free will, and
whether or not I abused that freedom, was up to
me. Would I show my gratitude for the men and
women who served and gave their lives for that
freedom by using my freedom responsibly or
would I abuse the power that I was given?
Because with the freedom that Ive been given I
could with one word build up or tear down; I
could with one action rebuild or destroy peoples
lives; I could with one choice enable or oppress
others. And that freedom was fought for trusting
that I would use it responsibly.
This Fourth of July, the word freedom is
going to be thrown around more and more; this is
why I think its just as important that we also
focus on our freedom as Christians. We are
given this amazing freedom where the baggage,
destruction, and death that sin creates in our lives
no longer remains a part of us. Every time we go
before God, He is there ready and willing to
forgive us, pick us up, and put us back on the
right path. Does this mean that we get a free pass
though to do whatever we want? Do we get to
live not caring about how our actions affect
others? No! Just as Paul says, the freedom
weve been given is a great responsibility. We
are given the freedom to choose to do what is
right on behalf of others, we are given the
freedom to love our neighbors as ourselves, and
















When I was growing up I had a skewed
sense of what freedom meant. For me, freedom
was the do whatever I want and its okay
mentality. Freedom was about me saying
whatever I wanted to say and doing whatever I
wanted to do. Even if this meant insulting my
brother and sisters and/or hitting them out of
anger. I remember being told by my oldest sister,
Davey you cant do that. My response would
be, Yes I can its a free country! Freedom was
all about doing what I wanted to do no matter
what. If it felt good, do it. If it didnt feel good,
get someone else to do it for you. It didnt matter
because with freedom there are no consequences
whatsoever for my actions; because if I live in a
free country, then I am free from consequences
too, right?
What I soon discovered was that even
though I lived in a free country, freedom didnt
mean that I could do whatever I wanted. There
were consequences to my actions, which I learned

we are given the freedom to live without fear
because nothing will ever separate us from Gods
love.
With that freedom comes great
responsibility. Through the blood, sweat, and
tear of Jesus; through the sacrifice he made for
you and me on the cross, we are free to finally
live as the people that God created us to be. Sin,
the devil, and death no longer have any hold in
our lives, and all the things that have kept us
from doing what is good and right in the world
cant hold us back any longer. We have the
power to stand up for what is truly good and right
in this world and in peoples lives no matter the
cost because of the freedom that weve been
given.
Jesus has given us all who believe this
freedom. The sacrifice he made for you on the
cross wasnt because of anything that you have
done or will do; he did it out of his love for you.
There is nothing you can or have done to earn the
freedom that youve been given, and that love and
forgiveness that God has for you will always be
there. However, we have been given a great
responsibility with the freedom we have. Will
you use it to build up or tear down? Will you use
it set others free or keep them in chains? Will you
use that freedom out of thankfulness for what has
been done for you or will you abuse it? As we
celebrate our nations Independence Day, how
will you use the freedom youve been given as a
Christian?

9am-4pm there is a
Habitat for Humanity
shed build that will be taking
place for all Middle School and High School
students at Westwood High School.

Also, there is a Country Lanes Lock-In for
students going into 9th grade through those who
just graduated on Friday, August 8 at 11 pm
through Saturday, August 9 at 6 am. Cost is $20
per student and I need permission slips in by
Friday, July 25th.

Do you know of anyone
who plays piano and would
like to play in church? The person should be
competent on a piano keyboard and have a
desire to play for worship services on Sunday
mornings. The new person would play once a
month and more during various times of the
year. Carol, Laura, and Nancy arent going
anywhere but would like more flexibility in
their schedules. Training will be provided.
