III. Subject Description :

This subject deals primarily with the acquisition of functional skills in the use of the second language. The lessons and activities focus on the development of
the four important skills namely reading, writing, listening and speaking. Various text types are used as springboards in discussing grammar lessons. The development
of relevant values is also given premium as one significant offshoot of instruction likewise the development of communicative competence through a guided approach
towards the verbalization of generalizations about language, opportunities to practice these organizations in speaking; writing and listening activities and a concise
guide on how to gain the skills that the lesson seeks to develop. This subject exposes the pupils to a wide variety of language experience which aim to make them
aware language is part of human behavior.

IV. General Objectives :

At the end of the grade three, the learner is expected to listen carefully to get information from text heard; demonstrate independence in using the basic
language structure in oral and written communication and read with comprehension.

FIRST QUARTER

At the end of the first grading period, the grade three pupils are expected to:
1. demonstrate reading and language competence through the use of the different content words in oral and written communication;
2. note details in selection given;
3. increase ones vocabulary;
4. use grammar structure correctly;
5. identify and formulate generalization about nouns and pronouns;
6. develop skills in comprehension;

CONTENT STANDARDS PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
Oral Language
- The learner understands the standards of English in order to participate in
various communication demands (situation, purpose and audience).

Phonics and Word Recognition
- The learner recognizes words and constructs meaning about them based
on series of cues (including word shape, contextual, perceptual,
phonological, and semantic formation) happening instantaneously.

Grammar
- The learner understands that English language has a set of structural
rules that govern the composition of clauses, phrases, and words in oral
and written communication.

Vocabulary Development
- The learner understands the importance of acquiring an extensive
receptive and expressive (passive and active) vocabulary for
communication or expression in various contexts and language functions.

Listening Comprehension
- The learner understands that listening is the receptive skill in the oral
mode that allows one to comprehend what is heard using ones skills and
background knowledge (shema).





- The learner has sufficient facility in English to understand spoken
discourse and to talk and interact with others about personal experiences
and text listened to or read.

- The learner uses sight word recognition or phonic analysis to read and
understand words in English that contain complex letter combinations,
affixes and contractions.


- The learner demonstrates grammatical awareness by being able to read,
speak, and write correctly and communicates effectively in oral and written
forms using the correct grammatical structures of English.


- The learner acquires, studies, and uses English vocabulary words
appropriately in relevant contexts.



- The learner activates prior knowledge conceptually related to text and
establishes a purpose for listening/reading. Be self-aware as they discuss
and analyze text to create new meanings and modify old knowledge.
Responds to literary text through the appreciate of literary devices and an
understanding of story grammar. And recalls/locates information from
expository texts and uses this information for discussion or written
production.
Reading Comprehension
- The learner understands that reading is a psycholinguistics guessing
game which utilizes visual and non-visual information in order to confirm,
modify, and monitor ones comprehension.




Fluency
- The learner understands the importance of acquiring a high level of
fluency in English in order to be understood by both native and non-
native listeners through:
1. Reading (the ability to easily read and understand texts written in the
language)
2. Writing (the ability to formulate written texts in the language)
3. Comprehension (the ability to follow and understand speech in the
language)
4. Speaking (the ability to produce speech in the language and be
understood by its speakers)

Spelling
- The learner understands that words are formed with letters in accepted
order (orthography)

Writing/Composition
- The learner understands the different formats to write for a variety of
audiences and purposes.

Attitude towards language, literature and literacy
- The learner understands the significance of interpreting the social
meaning of the choice of linguistic varieties and using language with the
appropriate social meaning for the communication situation.

Study skills
- The learner understands that there are an array of study skills, which may
tackle the process of organizing and taking in new information and
retaining information.

- The learner activates prior knowledge conceptually related to text and
establishes a purpose for reading. Be self-aware as they discuss and
analyze text to create new meanings and modify old knowledge.
Responds to literary texts through the appreciation of literary devices and
an understanding of story grammar and locates information from
expository texts and uses for discussion or written production.


- The learner reads aloud grade level texts effortlessly without hesitation
and with proper expression.










- The learner spells words with two or more syllables using phonic,
semantic, and morphemic expression.


- The learner expresses their ideas effectively their ideas in formal and
informal compositions to fulfill their own purposes for writing.


- The learner demonstrates a love for reading stories and confidence in
performing literacy-related activities / tasks.



- The learner chooses and utilizes discrete techniques (general or specific)
and applies them to all or most fields of study.
