July 2014

You know your child best.

As we begin this class together, I am very excited to
be working in partnership with you in order to help
your child achieve as much as possible. You are,
and will continue to be your childs most important
teacher. For seven or more years now you have had
the opportunity to watch your child grow and
develop into the person she is today. You know
what makes your child tick: what makes him laugh
and cry, what makes her so excited one minute and
apprehensive the next, what embarrasses him, what
she loves to do, what is challenging for your child,
etc.

In order for me to do the best job I can of nurturing
as well as educating your child, your input is very
valuable. Please take a few quiet minutes over the
next several days to sit back and reflect on your
child. I would love for you to write to me about this
very special child you are putting in my care the rest
of this year. What are the things you, as a parent,
would like me to know? I would love to know how
your child thinks, feels, plays, and how you see your
child as a learner. What are your goals for your child
this year?

Thanks so much for taking the time to write your
letter. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

What to Expect in 2nd grade

With this school year half way over you may already
be seeing these new skills. For review here are a few
things you can expect from our CORE curriculum this
year, and a couple behavior traits you may see
from your child.

1. Math. Second graders will understand place
value of numbers to thousand, mentally add up to
20, multiple digit addition and subtraction, problem
solving, simple fractions, tell time on an analog
clock, add and subtract money, and make change
up to $1.00. Whooo, and much more!

2. Language Arts. Your student will learn to predict
what happens next in a story, become a better
speller, write letters, keep a journal, identify parts of
speech, read more by themselves, at least 87 words
per minute and more!

3. Science and Social Studies. Understand how the
body works, learn about other cultures, about the
earth and night sky, and discuss current events.

4. PE, Music, Computers, and more. Students will
receive weekly PE, music, and formal computer
class, along with twice a day visiting the computer
lab for math and reading skills.

5. Social. Every child develops at a different rate. As
a parent you may already be seeing some of these
traits, or you may not see them at all. On average
here are a few changes I have seen. Second
graders will begin to develop close friendships, be
better able to concentrate on lessons for longer
periods of time, children are better at navigating
stumbling blocks and demonstrate increased
patience and self-control.

Jessica, Mr. Eschler
Mrs. Eschler & Taylor

Jessica, Mr. Eschler,

My classroom management philosophy.

I believe students take more responsibility for their behavior when they are given the opportunity to
assist in creating classroom rules and consequences. Creating limits and expectations for the safety of
students and a nurturing learning environment simultaneously encourages independence. Behind each rule,
communication of the reasoning will be given for student understanding. Expectations will be posted in the
classroom with examples of what the rule does and does not look like. Ongoing throughout the school year
time will be dedicated to presenting, modeling, referencing, practicing, and rewarding expectations.
I am dedicated to making my classroom a safe and stimulating environment. I will provide a safe
learning environment by enriching character education, listening to what students are trying to tell me; not
just what they are saying, and rewarding behavior that champions a safe environment. I will engage my
learners through the core curriculum by getting to know his or her life outside school, and understanding
personal learning style. Through understanding what motivates a child and learning preferences he or she
possess will enable me to create differentiated learning opportunities to peak continually a childs natural
curiosity to learn.
I believe communication is a fundamental part of my classroom. I will create an environment in which
students are comfortable with one another as well as me so that there can be significant dialogues and
exchanges. Conversation will be routine in my classroom. My students will know they can interject in a
discussion if they have an appropriate inquiry or remark. Students will use nonverbal communication as well
through American Sign Language (ASL), and hand signals. This atmosphere offers learners the chance to
learn and practice communication skills. Students are also given time to learn from each other with turn and
talk work time, table work time, and leveled learning centers.
I believe consistency is essential in classroom management. Students respond to clear
communication, clear expectations, positive reinforcement, a teacher who understands the student learner,
provides a safe learning environment, and expects students to have personal accountability. I believe I
display a sincere and encouraging attitude toward students while expressing honest curiosity and friendliness.
I believe I inspire independent and socially proficient behaviors that nurture advanced accomplishment
inspiration. These vital beliefs executed appropriately create my ideal classroom management.

Classroom Volunteers.

Volunteers are always
welcome in our classroom!
We will be in need of AM
language arts volunteers
and afternoon, math
volunteers; additionally I am
looking for one or two
volunteers willing to help out
on Fridays from 12:10-1:00
for some hands on Fun
Friday Activities.
In addition to our normally
schedule volunteers, if you
or someone you know has a
skill, talent, job that would
be of interest of the class
and would like to schedule
to come in and share I
would be happy to hear
from you!

Classroom Rewards and Consequences.

For our classroom to be a safe and engaged learning environment
they had created some general rules to be followed those are:
Raise your hand, Listen, Be a friend, Help clean up, and Share.

Individual. From my experience I believe second graders want to
follow directions and want to please others. To start the year I will be
using Classroom Dojo and I will send home access codes the first week
of school. If your student is having a really bad day, or a pattern of
behavior is concerning me, I will reach out and let you know.

Class. Each day the class starts with the word NOISE, for 3 warning a
letter is removed, if students get to NO by Friday, students will lose 10
minutes of Fun Friday.

Classroom management is different from class to class and month to
month at times. I will modify behavior plans student to student as
needed, and the class behavior plan if needed. I believe with clear
procedures, expectations, and a constant engaging classroom
behavior issues are kept to a minimum. I will be in touch with parents
who I believe could offer me additional support or ideas from to help
the learning environment in our classroom run more smoothly.

It takes a village.

Our schools are successful when teachers, parents, and students work
together to create a constant environment of learning. In this
collaborative partnership are specific duties:

Student Teacher Parent
* Follow class rules * Make classroom safe & fun * Check homework
* Read 20 min a day * Keep parents updated * Get student to

* Be at school * Grade papers * Ask about school
* Study hard * Explain work * Feed student
* Do homework * Listen and care * Schedule vacation

Everyone: Keep safe, check work, make learning fun, know the school
rules, be respectful, and peacefully coexist.
