Abstract
Naturally water is imperative for your muscles and yet it doesn’t have the

fuel capabilities of carbohydrates and electrolytes. This study’s purpose was to determine

if Gatorade exerts better performance than water (H2O). Gatorade contains blend of

electrolytes, electrolytes consisted of potassium, chloride, carbohydrates, and sodium,

electrolytes reconcile numerous body functions that the body is needed. The experiment

involved applying the variable (Elsom) to run a mile hydrated with water and Gatorade.

The variable consumed 4 liters of water before he runs the mile conventionally; after a

week he replenished himself with Gatorade, the same procedure was done with Gatorade.

The durations of the mile run were recorded. The study was done voluminously to

generate precise results.

2
Background Information

As an athlete, I have always wondered if what I saw in the Gatorade commercials

about how much Gatorade enhances athletic production was really true or not. I knew

that Gatorade had electrolytes that are supposed to help keep the body hydrated, but I

asked myself "Do these electrolytes in Gatorade truly enhance my stamina when I’m out

running track? “Electrolytes like sodium, potassium and chloride are lost in sweat.

Gatorade helps put back lost electrolytes and stimulates thirst so athletes drink more and

stay better hydrated. Gatorade delivers 6% carbohydrates to provide muscles with energy

and help fight fatigue. Research shows a 6% solution is optimal as higher concentrations

take longer to absorb and don’t further improve performance. “(Gatorade) If Gatorade

has the electrolytes and carbohydrates that our body demands then it should generate

greater result than water in locomotive response.

3
Materials
In order to determine whether Gatorade utilize better than water, fifteen liters of

Gatorade and water was prepared. One of the substantial nutrients in our body is water.

Water makes up 70% of our muscles; it helps protein structure of protein and glycogen. It

performs essential place in energy transformation. Water helps build stamina in our body

and it replaces the lost fluids in our body. It helps to regulate your body temperature. It

transports nutrients into your body such as carbohydrates, potassium, and chloride.

“Water is also the major ingredient in blood plasma, which transports nutrients and gases

to and between cells.” Insufficient intake of water will result into a negative

performance. Next, Gatorade is consists of electrolytes, carbohydrates, water, glucose,

and sucrose. Sodium Chloride, Sodium Citrate and Mono Potassium Phosphate are the

electrolyte minerals in Gatorade. These are formulated to quickly replace the minerals

you lose when you sweat.

Stopwatch was used in this experiment to get an accurate time in the mile.

Elsom Wong was my variable, he weights 185 pound, stands at 5’10, and he eats

like Kobayashi.

4
Procedure
1. 1st week: Obtain 15 liters of water

a. Acquire an empty 3 liters bottle and fill it up with water

2. Pick a 185 pound person, who is willing to sacrifice to run for weeks

3. The variable needs to be in bed at 10pm.

4. Make him consume the 3 liters of water to drink from 6am to 3pm.

5. Go to the track

a. Stretch for 30 minutes

b. Jog a warm up lap

c. Consume whatever is left in the 3liters of water

d. Get the timer; make sure you have a paper and a pencil to write with.

e. Make sure he/she starts on the Mile mark, and as soon you say go start the

clock.

f. As soon as he hits the mile mark, record the time and write it down on a

piece of paper.

6. Repeat the procedure everyday for at least 5 days.

7. After the 5 days of running make him/her rest for 2 days

8. 2nd week: Obtain 15 liters of Gatorade

a. Obtain a powder Gatorade

b. Thoroughly mix it with water

c. Put the Gatorade in the 3 liters of an empty bottle

9. Repeat procedure steps 3-10,

Observation

Day 1 8:45 Day 1 8:00
Day 2 8:30 Day 2 7:59
Day 3 8:10 Day 3 7:55
Day 4 8:09 Day 4 7:56
Day 5 7:58 Day 5 7:50

Seconds were converted to percent for illustration

In the first week, Elsom hydrated and replenished his body with water. His

results were consistent. His time gradually decreased as he got in the right condition. He

ran 8 minutes and 45 seconds on the 1st day. He struggled; it was rigorous for him to run

because he wasn’t in the right condition. Next, the second day his time crumbled by 15

seconds, his duration was 8 minutes and 30 seconds. The third day his duration decreased

by 20 seconds, he acquired 8 minutes and 10 seconds. The fourth day his time only went

6
down by one, he acquired 8 minutes and 9 seconds. The final day his time declined by 7

minutes and 58 seconds.

In the second week, Elsom hydrated and replenished his body with Gatorade. He

ran 8 minutes in his 1st day with Gatorade. In the second time he pulled out 7 minutes and

59 seconds. Third time he went down to 7 min and 55 seconds. The fourth day he ran 7

min and 56 seconds. Finally, Elsom ran his fastest time in mile with 7 minutes and 50

seconds.

7
Analysis

The solvents locomotion was successfully prepared and tested for about 2

weeks. To reduce fatigue, drink sports drinks that contain carbohydrates. With prolonged

exercise, muscle-glycogen stores (stored glucose that supplies energy) become depleted,

and blood glucose becomes a primary fuel source. “To maintain performance levels and

prevent fatigue, consume drinks and snacks that provide about 30-60 grams of rapidly

absorbed carbohydrate for every hour of training.”(Richard Seven) Gatorade had

remarkable results. Gatorade’s electrolytes, carbohydrates, and sodium definitely

promoted the performance. As shown below Gatorade has the least amount of time in the

mile.

DAYS

The electrolytes from the Gatorade were utilized to conduct an electrical charge

when in a solution. Electrolytes played a role in conducting nerve impulses, muscle

contractions, and keeping the fluid balance in to the variable’s body. Finally, Elsom’s

electrolytes were deceased from his sweat; the electrolytes from the Gatorade replaced

8
them, particularly potassium and sodium. Therefore, the concentration of his body fluids

remained constant resulting in better performance than the water. Water, didn’t have any

electrolytes to give him extra push, but water played an important role transporting the

carbohydrates and electrolytes to the system.

9
Conclusion
In conclusion, Gatorade indeed speeds up the absorption of fluid, electrolytes, and

carbohydrates into your body. Gatorade preserves blood volume and blood pressure, to

prevent dehydration through your muscles. Gatorade out performs water, embracing to

exercise excessive in length before hitting the fatigue spasm, sustain a faster speed in the

very last competition, and illustrate a greater strength in exercise. My hypothesis was

proven to be true, electrolytes, sucrose, and carbohydrates that assist our bodies to

recuperate faster helped produce greater performance than water.
