Voorhees
vet honored
as last
survivor of
plane crash
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
On June 21, nearly 200 people
gathered at Canvey Island to
honor the crews of two B-17 Fly-
ing Fortresses, which collided
over the river Thames on June 19,
1944. At the center of this remem-
brance ceremony was Voorhees
World War II veteran Richard W.
Andrews, who is the last survivor
of the crash.
As the years have passed, I just
happened to be hanging on to the
end, Andrews said. Its an
honor to be remembered and it
was an honor to serve with those
men who lost their lives that day.
Andrews was born and raised
in Haddonfield, graduating from
Haddonfield Memorial High
School in 1941, before hitchhiking
north to work at Republic, where
he hoped to work on airplanes.
I was always fascinated with
airplanes, he said. As a kid, I
built model airplanes, and when I
got a little older, I used to head

As the weather heats up, so do the activi-
ties in Voorhees.
From May 1 to May 11, the Voorhees
Town Center hosted a carnival to benefit
the NephCure Foundation. Thousands of
people enjoyed great food, good music and
exciting rides to benefit a wonderful cause.
On May 6, I enjoyed the Courier-Posts
Best of South Jersey Celebration at The
Mansion. Several Voorhees businesses
were honored, including the Voorhees
Town Center as the Best Shopping Mall.
On May 9, I attended the Boomerang
Lunch at Kellman
Brown Academy, a
program that en-
courages the stu-

On the morning
of May 10, I joined
several concerned
residents as part
of the Kirkwood
Lake Clean-Up.
The group picked up trash in the areas sur-
rounding the lake in an effort to improve
the quality of life and increase use of the

I
f you have a child in public school,
chances are that you are well-in-
formed as to what the Partnership
for Assessment of Readiness for Col-
lege and Careers, or PARCC, is.
As a quick refresher, its a new on-
line platform that students in grades
four through eight will take instead of
their former state standardized tests.
PARCC aligns with the new Common
Core State Standards, which has more
rigorous benchmarks for student
learning.
No longer will students take the tra-
ditional tests we grew up with a
Scantron form that we used a No. 2
pencil to complete. Instead, students
will take math and language arts tests
completely online.
PARCC testing begins in the fall at
public schools throughout New Jersey,
apparently whether local school dis-
tricts are technologically ready for it
or not. Some of the districts we cover
in both Princeton and South Jersey
have expressed concern about their
readiness for administering the tests.
Thats a problem. But, as these same
districts have said, they dont have a
choice. The PARCC testing is signed
into state law, and there is no turning
back at this point.
One of the more concerning aspects
of PARCC, though, isnt how its ad-
ministered or the content of the tests
themselves; its the fact that the re-
sults of the tests will be given major
weight in the judgment of teachers
and administrators.
The formula in place says student
progress on state testing will make up
30 percent of an evaluation for teach-
ers in grades four through eight.
While we arent against using test re-
sults to judge teachers, at least in part,
we dont believe that now is the time to
dive head-first into holding them ac-
countable for testing for which their
district might not be prepared.
The state Assembly passed a bill last
week that would delay this judgment
on teachers until the kinks are ironed
out. The state Senate delayed a vote,
opting instead to wait for direction
from Gov. Christie, whos expected to
issue an executive order reducing the
weight of the test results in teacher
evaluations in the short term.
We back this thinking 100 percent.
Having some objective measurers
such as test results to evaluate teach-
ers is valuable.
In the past, all anyone had to go on
was subjective matters. But giving
such heavy weight to test results when
there are so many issues surrounding
the administration of that test is un-
fair.
Its the states job to ensure its
school districts are up to speed on
PARCC before it starts using it against
our teachers.
Delay the judgment of teachers
PARCC testing needs to be ironed out first, before we hold our teachers to results

dition to our diverse religious
community.
On May 21, I attended the

concerns and interests of a civic,

Freeholders provide fans to

Camden County Seniors
To help senior citi-
zens beat the heat this
season, the Camden
County Freeholder
Board is once again dis-
tributing free fans.
Camden County resi-
dents age 60 and older
with an income of
$25,000 or less are eligi-
ble to receive a fan. There are currently
more than 100 fans ready for immediate
distribution with more on the way.
Many senior citizens are living in
homes without air conditioning or other
means of cooling. When temperatures
rise to dangerous levels, these seniors
should open windows to release trapped
air and use a fan to circulate the air in a
home. This not only makes it more com-
fortable, but more importantly makes it
safer.
During the hottest days of summer,
senior citizens should wear lightweight
clothing and avoid strenuous activity in
the hot sun or in other hot areas. If you
must be out in the sun, wear a head cover-
ing. A wide-brimmed hat or visor will not
only protect your head from intense rays
of the sun, it will also provide a shield for
your eyes. Those taking regular medica-
tion should consult with their physician.
Some medications cause an adverse reac-
tion in hot weather. Drink plenty of non-
alcoholic liquids, warm and cool. Because
the body loses fluids in the heat, drinking
lots of liquids helps to avoid dehydration.
The national weather service has al-
ready issued heat advisories this year.
They do this when the combination of hot
temperatures and high humidity become
dangerous and can cause heat related ill-
nesses, especially in senior citizens.
The early warning
signs of heat stress are
decreased energy, slight
loss of appetite, faint-
ness, light-headedness
and nausea. People expe-
riencing these symptoms
should go to a cool envi-
ronment, drink liquids,
remove excess clothing
and rest.
The Camden County Health Officer is
responsible for issuing Heat Alerts. When
this happens, municipalities are notified
that it would be appropriate to open mu-
nicipal cooling centers to the public. Each
municipality in Camden County has iden-
tified and is responsible for activating its
own municipal cooling center. Please con-
tact your local municipality for the loca-
tion of the cooling center closest to you.
For more than a decade we have
worked with senior organizations and
municipal emergency management coor-
dinators to distribute fans to seniors.
Please take the proper precautions to en-
sure that this summer is safe and enjoy-
able.
To request a fan or to obtain more in-
formation, please call the Camden County
Division of Senior Services at (856) 858-
3220. For other health related informa-
tion, contact the county Department of
Health and Human Services at (800) 999-

would have it, I traded my usual
spot on that mission to fly in the
tail, which was the reason I sur-
vived.
The crash killed 11 members of
the flight team.
The remembrance ceremony
on June 19 honored all the mem-
bers of the Heavenly Body flight
crews, which was the name of the
planes. A candle was lit for each
of the crew, with a last candle lit
for Andrews, the only man left
standing.
I couldnt attend the ceremo-
ny, Andrews said.
My daughter Barbara and my
son-in-law went for me, though,
and opened the ceremony with a
letter I wrote.
In the letter, Andrews thanked
his crewmembers and those in at-
tendance for honoring him.
While the crash may have been
a traumatic experience, Andrews
continued to fly after the war,
going on to buy his own planes
and to teach at a variety of flight
schools.
After the war, I actually moved
to Voorhees to be close to the Ech-
elon airport, he said.
I was taking over the con-
struction company my dad and
grandfather owned, but I wanted
to be close to an airport so I could
still fly.
Andrews also got involved with
the community, becoming presi-
dent on the Board of Education in
Voorhees. But, he could never
shake his love for flying, and
eventually, he passed it on to his
daughter.
My daughter actually is a
pilot and owns her own planes,
too, he said. She even named it
Heavenly Body III.

ored to participate in the Annual
Memorial Service at the Mt. Zion
AME Church and the Ashland
Presbyterian Church. I was once
again privileged to be the guest
speaker at the Annual Kirkwood
Memorial Day Parade that hon-
ors the fallen heroes who pay the
ultimate price for our freedom.
Thanks to the volunteers on the
parade committee, particularly
the Vandegrift family, as well as
the Voorhees Township Fire De-
partment and the Eastern March-
ing Vikings for making the pa-
rade and ceremony memorable.
On the morning of June 1, I at-
tended the Alicia Rose Victorious
Foundation Annual 5K Run and
was honored to present the win-
ners with their medals. The
ARVF continues to improve the
quality of life of young people
battling cancer by installing Teen
Centers in hospitals throughout
the world.
On June 5, I was honored to
help cut the ribbon at the grand
opening of the new Hampton Inn
on Route 73 in Voorhees. It is a
wonderful addition to our com-
munity.
On the weekend of June 6 to 8,
the Suarez family organized the
Striking Out Kids Cancer Tour-
nament of Champions Baseball
Fundraiser involving the Gibbs-
boro Voorhees Athletic Associa-
tion and the Berlin Athletic Asso-
ciation. More than 30 teams from
across the Delaware Valley com-
peted, raising more than $20,000
for the Cancer Institute at CHOP.
On the evening of June 9, I en-
joyed participating in Kellman
Brown Academys Green Family
Arts Festival and presented a
commendation to Rabbi Moshe
Schwartz in recognition of KBA
being named a Green Ribbon
School. KBA is one of only two
schools in New Jersey and 48
schools in the country to be so
honored by the U.S. Department
of Education.
On the evening of June 11, I at-
tended the Voorhees Cultural and
Diversity Foundations Play-
ground for Children Fundraiser
at Chez Elena Wu in Voorhees.
Proceeds from the event benefited
local children.
On the morning of June 14, I
helped welcome 72 disc golfers
from all over the east coast to the
2014 Stafford Open. Voorhees
Stafford Woods Disc Golf Course
is one of the top-rated disc golf
courses in the country. In the af-
ternoon, I was part of the Philip-
pine Independence Picnic Cele-
bration at Cooper River Park.
Hundreds of members of the
Voorhees Filipino community en-
joyed a day-long celebration of
their heritage. Later in the day, I
was honored to be part of the
Voorhees Senior Citizens Clubs
Annual Luncheon.
On June 18, I enjoyed the
monthly VBA luncheon that was
sponsored by the Eastern Educa-
tion Foundation. The VBA award-
ed scholarships to Eastern High
School Seniors Rebekah Madrid
and Lucas Brown.
On the evening of June 19,
thousands gathered on a beauti-
ful evening at Connolly Park to
enjoy Bruce in the USA. This is
the fourth time this act has been
part of our Summer Series and
always draws the biggest crowd.
On the afternoon of June 20, I
was once again honored to take
part in Eastern Regional High
Schools graduation ceremony.
Congratulations to all the gradu-
ates!
On the afternoon of June 21, I
enjoyed meeting members of the
National Federation of Filipino
American Associations who
came from all over the east coast
to gather at Chez Elena Wu in
Voorhees.
At the June 24 Voorhees Town-
ship Committee meeting, I was
honored to swear in our five new
police officers, all of whom live in
Voorhees. Congratulations to
Larry Spellman III, Jack Kluk,
Thomas Bordi, Jonah Randazzo
and Jonathan Daddario.
On June 28, the Ashley Paul
Memorial Foundation held its
Annual Birthday Bash to raise
funds to carry on Ashleys spirit
and to foster volunteerism and in-
volvement in the Voorhees Com-
munity.
Upcoming events include the
second show in our 2014 Summer
Twilight Series on Thursday, July
17 (rain date July 24) and will fea-
ture EagleMania The Worlds
Greatest Eagles Tribute Band.
The show is free and starts at 7:30
p.m. on the Great Lawn at Con-
nolly Park. For more informa-
tion, visit www.voorheesnj.com.
Pennsylvania Real Estate In-
vestment Trust will hold the first

13 to July 20. Guests will be of-
fered special menus and pricing
at Burger 21, Catelli Duo, Elena

Rodizio Grill.
From July 21 through July 25,
the Voorhees Township Police De-
partment will hold the 1st Annual
Junior Police Academy for young
people from the age of 12 to 15
who will learn to appreciate and
respect the duties and life of a po-
lice officer. Cadets will engage in
physical fitness training, march-
ing exercises, ceremonies such as
raising the flag and classroom in-
struction. There is also a plan to
take all the cadets to the New Jer-

AIR DUCT & CARPET CLEANING
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
The cleanup of Kirkwood Lake
made a major stride this week,
when Sherwin William agreed to
work with the community.
We are very happy to know
that Sherwin Williams is going to
provide us with some assistance,
Alice Johnston, member of the
Kirkwood Lake Environmental
Committee, said. While there is
still a lot of work to be done, this
is truly a huge step in the right di-
rection.
The news comes after last
weeks public hearing on the mat-
ter to create a plan for dredging
and removing the toxins in the
lake.
The meeting was a letdown,
Johnston said. We werent able
to make any definitive plans, but
at least the discussions have start-
ed, and that is something to be
happy about.
Freeholder Jeffery Nash pre-
sented a rough plan at the meet-
ing in the absence of JMT Engi-
neers who were supposed to be in
attendance. The plan outlined
steps that need to be made to save
the lake, which include dredging,
cleaning and an additional spray-
ing.
The lake was sprayed with
aqua pro last month to stop the
spread of spatterdock, but it was
not successful. Professionals
were back at the lake on July 1 to
spray the lake again.
While we werent expecting to
have to spray the lake again so
soon, we had always envisioned a
second spray would be neces-
sary, Johnston said.
And while the June 24 meeting
was beneficial, on June 25, the
issue was brought to the attention
of Gov. Christies aide.
Ed Kelleher and Sadie Maw-
son, Kirkwood Lake Environmen-
tal Committee volunteers, dis-
cussed the issue with the aide
during the governors trip to Had-
don Heights.
His aide also accepted a book-
let, petition, pictures and back-
ground information to share with
Christie.
It is great that those volun-
teers took the initiative and
shared this story with someone
who can pass it along to some
higher powers, Johnston said.
Hopefully, now that the word can
spread to decision makers, things
will start to move quicker.
Johnston is also planning to
meet with another Christie aide
toward the end of the week.
Even with the information
being passed along, however,
Johnston knows little can be done
without the Environmental Pro-
tection Agency, which has yet to
weigh in on the topic of Kirkwood
Lake.
This is a three-prong process,
she said.
Sherwin Williams has accept-
ed their part, the community is
willing to do what we can, but
without the EPA, were all at a
standstill.
Another public meeting is
being planned for the beginning
of August. Johnston hopes this
meeting will include all parties
involved.
Now that Sherwin Williams is
open to provide support, I hope
we can get everyone in a room to-
gether, so that way decisions can
be made, she said.
