Concurrent Mode RF Module Sharing - basic idea
Concurrent Mode = RF Module Sharing, in this presentation
Two Radio Access Technologies, RATs share the same RF Power amplifiers
The output power of the RF power amplifiers is split between the two RATs
All carriers through the shared RF power amplifiers must be in the same frequency band

The benefits of the Concurrent Mode are cost savings
Possibly fewer RF Modules
Two RATs can share the antenna feeders and Antennas in the same frequency band
No need for Antenna line Combiners in simple cases

Concurrent Mode, use cases
Frequency Re-farming and BTS Modernizing
Operators plan re-farming GSM frequencies to WCDMA or LTE, to get more data capacity
They bring new WCDMA or LTE technology to GSM frequency bands

When they bring new technology, they can easily modernize their existing GSM BTSs
They still need to keep some GSM capacity for existing GSM terminal base and for roaming users
Operators will have two technologies in the same frequency band Use Concurrent Mode !

Some Operators plan re-farming part of their WCDMA frequencies to LTE
At the same time they can easily modernize their WCDMA BTSs
Operators will have two technologies in the same frequency band Use Concurrent Mode !

Concurrent Mode, standardization and our message
New ETSI MSR standard will enable Concurrent Mode in Radio Access Network
MSR = Multi Standard Radio, allows multiple radio technologies through the same RF Power Amp
Draft MSR standard is estimated to come available in August 2010
Then a vendor can certify their equipment and get the CE mark
Radio Network using MSR certified equipment can start operating earliest in September 2010

Vendor B claims they already have a MSR BTS
Actually they have separate RF Power Amplifiers for each technology in a single box
It is not certified as MSR BTS. Instead, it is certified as two co-sited single-technology BTSs
NSN has had co-sited BTSs for years

Flexi Multiradio BTS - Concurrent Mode Operation
WCDMA System Module is in the master role in Concurrent Mode
It controls shared Antenna line devices (MHA, RET) and shared licenses

The two base stations sharing the RF Module, are both visible separately in NetAct
Both base stations have their own alarms and own Performance Management
The alarms of the shared RF Module are seen at both technologies in NetAct

NetAct OSS5.3 will support RF Sharing GSM-WCDMA and GSM-LTE

Radio Network planning is still done separately, similar to single technologies

Automated recovery according to operator preferences
A second Multimode System Module can be installed for providing protection against
System Module, transport sub-module and optical link failures
If one of the System Modules becomes faulty, only part of the capacity is lost, because the other
System Module can still continue the service
If one of the optical links fails, automatic re-routing of the optical links
If one of the RF Modules goes down, only part of the capacity is lost, because the other RF
Modules in the same frequency band can still continue the service
If the main backhaul transport sub-module fails, the 2nd transport sub-module can be used to
provide recovery

Flexi Multiradio BTS - Summary
Concurrent Mode RF Sharing Site Solution
Frequency re-farming starts in 900 and 1800 MHz bands
Operators bring WCDMA or LTE technology to their GSM bands
Then they can easily modernize their GSM Network
Two radio technologies come to the same band Use Concurrent Mode RF Modules

New ETSI MSR, Multi Standard Radio, standard will enable using Concurrent Mode
Radio Network with MSR certified equipment can start operating earliest in September 2010

NSN offers Flexi Multiradio BTS for true MSR Concurrent Mode applications
900 MHz band, GSM-WCDMA or GSM-LTE
1800 MHz band, GSM-LTE
