Introduction

During the summer vacation of 1952, I visited Bombay (now

Mumbai) for the first time at the age of 2! "aving #ived the
first ten years of chi#dhood in#and in a re#ative#y sma## city of
$agda#%ur (District %o%u#ation 5,) in Bastar and #ater in
&ag%ur (District %o%u#ation 5,) in Maharashtra , I was
genuine#y curious about a #arge metro%o#is #i'e Bombay
(%o%u#ation (,,) situated on the edge of the )rabian
sea! I stayed in Bombay with my e#der brother, *udha'ar,
who was a bache#or at that time and had +ust started his first
+ob after graduating from &ag%ur ,niversity! *udha'ar was
em%#oyed by "ughes - Davies #ocated in the .ort area of
Bombay! "e #ived in a /estern suburb of Bombay ca##ed
0oregaon, which was a one hour commute by #oca# train to
the .ort area!
1n every wor'ing day, I accom%anied *udha'ar u% to his
office in .ort and then went my own way to e2%#ore the
e2%anse and humanity of Bombay which seemed to be
throbbing with activity a## day #ong! *ince I had not yet seen
and e2%erienced the sea and its beach, I as'ed *udha'ar if
there was an uncrowded beach that I cou#d visit after #unch!
"e recommended 3ersova beach, which was convenient#y
#ocated between .ort and 0oregaon! *o I rode the #oca# train
as far as I cou#d and tre''ed the rest of the way to the beach4
reaching there at around two in the afternoon!
/hi#e wa#'ing on the beach with #imit#ess curiosity and
soa'ing u% a## that I was e2%eriencing, I fe#t the crunchy sand
under my na'ed feet, the constant #a%%ing of the waves
embracing the beach, the *un and the dee% b#ue s'y
ref#ecting through the waters! )bove a##, to my de#ightfu#
sur%rise, I noticed a generous s%rin'#ing of co#orfu# *eashe##s
a#ong the entire beach! 5oo'ing c#ose#y, each *eashe##
seemed to have a thought %rovo'ing beauty of its own! *ince
this beach had not yet become the %aradise of 6ourists, the
beach was c#ean, serene, and en+oyab#e for the so#itude that I
had sought for that afternoon!
Disregarding any sense of time, I se#ective#y %ic'ed
*eashe##s of a## %ossib#e si7es, sha%es and beautifu# co#ors
unti# the *un started to set on the western hori7on against the
