:ntroduce the idea of compare%contrast to the class. Discuss opposites in
personalities. (ead the story aloud to the class. <sing smart board* complete a story
map of the main e8ents as a class. 6egin to brainstorm ideas of how to describe
characters.

Di8ide the class into # groups. 4a8e the first group start the C7ournalE worAsheet* while
the other group does the /idspiration pro7ect on the computers.

This acti8ity will strengthen students; writing sAills as well as their ability to relate lessons
to their li8es. "tudents will describe the detail of their best friends. Then* they will
compare themsel8es to their best friends. They will discuss how they are liAe their
friends and how they are different from their friends.

6idspiration pro(ect
The second group will be split up into pairs. ach pair will worA at one computer. The
computer will already ha8e a worAsheet loaded on /idspiration. The students who speaA
nglish as a second language will be paired with students who are successful in the
classroom. The students will worA together to fill in the blanAs in describing how Ballace
and 'lbert are aliAe and how Ballace and 'lbert are different. This acti8ity will strengthen
their reading comprehension as well as their abilities to compare%contrast characters.

in the story.
