Employment Opportunities and Job Roles in the Film Industry

How many people are employed by the UK film industry?

2

There are roughly 70,000 people working in the UK film industry , this is
because of a massive increase in popularity (up 261% on 1996) This has lead to
Warner Bros making Leavesden Studios its European base (much to the chagrin of
some of the local residents).

Is the number of people working in the UK film industry growing or falling?

There are multiple factors behind the recent boom in film industry workers.
Most of this is fuelled by Hollywoods inward investment in the UK
But the biggest single factor has to be the UK Tax Credit system, new figures
show spending on film production in the UK soared by 14 per cent to more than
1billion.
Currently, producers of British films can claim back around 20% of the money
they spend in the UK from the government. This system is generous, simple and has
been stable since 2006!

What are the different roles available in the UK film industry?
(Development, production, post-production; how are they linked?)

Fortunately our industry is growing ,this results in more job opportunities but
unfortunately is is doing so unevenly. The majority of new jobs are in production
whereas the film exhibition section has had numerous periods of decline.

Where would you go to find jobs in this industry? (Provide links and explain
why they are useful)

The links between these job roles are that they are all important in each
individual way to make a great and successful short film etc.

Using the internet is by far the best resource to use when searching for a job in
this industry besides word of mouth.
Using http://www.myfirstjobinfilm.co.uk/filmcareers.html

It provides an easy to read job board that lists all the current positions available
that different companies or projects require. It is a special and helpful as it lists what is
required for the job so you can see if it is suitable for you.

What are the differences between freelance, permanent and casual work?
A freelance worker is self employed, there are many free lance workers in the
media industry such as camera men, costume designers, technical and editing crew
ect, they are usually represented by a recruitment company or agency that promotes
them to productions and other companies that seek there skill set.

Why is professional behaviour important to succeed in the industry?
(consider reliability, attendance and punctuality and communication skills)

Professional behaviour is very important for any job especially in the media
industry, everyone is judged on there reputation and it will be hard to find work if you
are perceived as irresponsible as if you want to be taken seriously in any line of work
you must be on your best behaviour as your attitude will reflect your work ethic.
