St Ma r i na / Mar ga r e t o f An t i o c h
St Marina (also known as St Margaret, St Marguerite, St Margarita) lived in
what is now modern-day Pisidia, Turkey, in the early fourth century.
St Marina was born in Asia Minor, in the city of Antioch of Pisidia (southern
Asia Minor), into the family of a pagan priest.
In infancy she lost her mother, so her father put her into the care of a
nursemaid, who raised St Marina in the Orthodox Christian Faith.
Upon learning that his daughter had converted to Christianity, the father
angrily disowned her.
It was during the time of the incalculable persecution against Christians
under Emperor Diocletian (284-305).
At the tender age of fifteen, St Marina was arrested and imprisoned.
However, with unwavering Faith in the Divine Will of God and His Help, the
young Holy Martyr prepared for her impending contest.
The Governor, Olymbrios, charmed by her beauty and purity, tried to
persuade her to renounce the Christian Faith and marry him.
But the Saint adamantly refused all his offers, whereupon the vexed,
frustrated Governor handed her over to the executioners for the most
hideous of tortures.
Having beaten her fiercely, they nailed the young Holy Martyr to a board and
tore at her body with tridents.
Governor Olymbrios was unable to watch the horror of these brutal tortures
on such an innocent and pure body, so he hid his face in his hands.
By the Grace of God, St Marina remained unyielding and steadfastly Faithful
to Christ and when finally thrown back into the dungeon for the night,
she received Heavenly Aid and Comfort, and was healed of all her
appalling wounds.
Early the following morning, the torturers renewed their brutal punishment.
They stripped her naked and tied her to a tree, then burnt her with flaming
bunches of faggots.
Barely alive, St Marina prayed aloud: Lord, Thou hast granted me to go
through fire for Thy Names sake - grant me also to go through the Water
of Holy Baptism.
The Governer heard her mention water so he immediately issued orders to
drown her in a large cauldron.
Then St Marina besought our Lord that this manner of execution should
become for her Holy Baptism.
As they plunged her into the water, suddenly a Heavenly Light shone down
upon St Marina, and a snow-white dove hovered above her, bearing in
its beak a magnificant golden Crown.
The fetters that shackled St Marina fell apart and she was able to stand up in
that cauldron that had become her Baptismal Font and she loudly,
triumphantly Glorified the Holy Trinity God the Father, the Son and the
Holy Spirit.
She emerged with her body completely healed - without any trace of her
indescribable torments.

Astounded by such a great Divine Miracle, the people who had gathered to
watch her execution, also began to loudly Glorify the One True and Living
God, and many of them accepted Christ as their Lord and Saviour, which
caused the wrath of the Roman authorities.
Governor Olymbrios angrily issued orders for the immediately execution of
anyone who dared to Confess and Glorify Christ.
Consequently on that day, 15,000 Christians perished and the Great Holy
Martyr, St Marina was also beheaded by sword.
The Martyrdom of St Marina was described by an eyewitness - named
Theotimos.
Until the devastating sacking of Constantinople by ungodly, Western
Crusaders in 1204, the Holy Relics St Marina the Great Holy Martyr of
Antioch were perserved in the Panteponteia Monastery.
According to other sources, they remained in Antioch until 908 when they
were taken by the invaders to Italy.
At present St Marinas Holy Relics are preserved in Athens, in a church that
is dedicated to the Holy Virgin Martyr, and her venerable hand is
preserved at the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos.
May the memory of St Marina/Margarita be Eternal and may she continue to
intercede with God for the Salvation of our immortal soul.

O Virgin Maiden, the beautiful Signs of
Virginity adorned Thee, and the

Crown, O Marina, sprinkled with the
drops of blood from Thy Contest,
glowing with Thy Cures and
Miracles, Thou were awarded as if
with a golden medal, AS VICTOR IN

From infancy Thou were consumed with
wholehearted Love for Christ the
Bridegroom, O Virtuous Maiden. So
Thou ran to Him, like a thirsty
gazelle to ever-flowing Springs, and
Thou preserved Thyself in the
Contest, and as a Glorious Bride
Thou reached the truly Eternal
Chamber of Thy Creator, decorated,
adorned, crowned, glowing as a

awarded as if with a gold medal, as
Victor in the Martyric Games.
