1.0Introduction

CongratulationsonyourrecentpurchaseoftheOceanscienceZBoat1800.

TheOceanscienceZBoat1800isaremotelyoperatedelectricboatdesignedtomakesafe,unmanned
measurementsofbathymetry

TherearetwomodelsofZBoat1800,the1800andthe1800(HighSpeed).TheZBoat1800operatesin
displacementhullmodeattopspeedwithasingle200Woutdriveanda12VNiMHbatterypack,
producingatopspeedofaround1.8m/s(6f/s).TheZBoat1800(HighSpeed)operatesinplanninghull
modeatmaximumspeedwithtwin750Woutdrivesandthree24VNiMHbatterypacks.Withthestock
propellers,topspeedis5m/s(16f/s).TheZBoat1800hasanABSplastichull.

2.0SafetyandCautions

Safetyisamajorconcernwhenworkingaroundmovingpropellers.Extremecautionmustbeobserved
whenworkingonoraroundtheZBoat.Thepropellerscanrotateatmorethan3,000RPMandproduce
750W(1.0HP)each.Thereisextremedangerofinjuryifthepropellersaretouchedwhileoperating.
Alwaysstayclearofthepropellerswhenthebatteriesareonboard.Thelargeredemergencystopswitch
canbedepressed(forwarddeckofboat)toimmediatelycutpowertothemotorsinanunexpectedevent.

WhenpoweringuptheZBoat,alwaysturntheradiotransmitteronbeforepoweringtheboatitself.If,
whenpoweredup,thereceiverontheboatdoesnotdetectacontrollersignal,theboatmay
unexpectedlyenterthefailsafemode.Thiscouldbeextremelydangerous,dependingonthefailsafe
setting.Thoughcustomizableinthefield,theZBoatsdefaultfailsafebehavioristotravelinawidecircle
untilRCcontactisreestablished.

Conversely,whenshuttingdownalwayspowerdowntheboat(usingtheredbatteryswitch)before
shuttingdownthetransmitter.Again,ifthetransmitterisshutoffbeforetheboat,unexpectedand
possiblyverydangerousmaneuverswilllikelyoccur.

Improperlyinstalledinstrumentscancausetheboattofillwithwater.NevertrytooperatetheZBoat
1800withoutproperlyinstalledinstruments.

NOTE:THEZBOAT1800HASADRAINPLUG.ALWAYSCHECKTHATTHEDRAINPLUGISFULLYSECURE

TheZBoat1800isshippedwiththeoutdrive,skeg,andoptionalGPSmountremoved.This
sectionprovidesinstructionstoattachtheoutdriveandskegtotheZBoat1800,toconnectthe
steeringlinkageandhowtoproperlychargeandinstallthebattery.

4.1OutdriveandSteeringLinkageInstallation(ZBoat1800)

Thefollowingitemsarerequiredtoinstalltheoutdriveandsteeringlinkage:

1. Inserttheconnectorandcableupthroughtheoutdrivemountandsteeringclamp.(See
Figure4.1)

2. Positiontheoutdriveshaftsothatthetopofthecableglandis23inchesabovethetopof
theoutdrivesteeringarm.(Seefigure4.2)

3. Tightenthesteeringclampusingthefingernut.DONOTOVERTIGHTEN.

4. Connectthemotorpower/controlcabletothe4pinbulkheadasshown.(Seefigure4.4)
Note:theconnectoriskeyedandwillfitinonlyoneorientation.

5. Theoutdrivecanberaisedorloweredfordeploymentorstoragepositions.

Notesaboutproperalignment
Ifacontrolsignalisnotpresentwhentheservoispoweredup,theservoarmmayturntoan
extremeangle,causingdamagetothesteeringlinkageortheservo.Usecautionwhenpowering
uptheservotoavoiddamagingthesystem.Werecommendthesteeringlinkagebe
disconnectedfromtheservoarmfortheinitialbenchtesting.

4.3ChargingtheBatterySystems(ZBoat1800)

TheZBoat1800isnormallyequippedwitha12V30AhNiMHbatterypackandaHitecAurora9
transmitterwitha7.2VNiMhbatterypack.Itisimportantthattheuserfullychargeeachbattery
systembeforedeployment.

Thepropulsionbatteriesoperatingendurancebetweenchargesrangesfrom70minutesto240
minutesdependingonoperatingspeedanduseofsteering.

Tochargetheremotecontroltransmittersbatterypack,pleaserefertothetransmitter
manufacturersinstructionmanual.

1. DisconnectallshipboardconnectionstothebatteryandremovethebatteryfromtheZBoat.
Placethebatteryinawellventilatedareaawayfromflammablehazards.

2. Ensurethe3to1adaptercablehasbeendisconnectedfromallthreewhiteMolex
connectors,ordischargeterminals,asshown.(Seefigure4.9)

Important:ThebatterychargeterminalsconsistofthreeTamiyaconnectorsthataretinted
greenishyellow.Therearetheconnectorsthatwillbeusedforcharging.ThewhiteMolex
connectorsareusedfordischarge(runtimeoperation)onlyandshouldneverbeusedto
chargethebattery.Dependingonthebattery,oneorbothtypesoftheseconnectorsmay
haveidentifyinglabels.(Seefigure4.10)

3. Connectthethreechargingadapterstoeachportonthe12Vbatterycharger.Eachadapter
isa2pieceassembly.EnsurealladaptersterminateingreenishyellowTamiyaconnectors
thatmatcheachbatteryschargeterminals.(Seefigure4.11)

4. Selectthedesiredchargingrateoneachportviaswitchesonthepanel.Chooseeithera
0.9Aor1.8Achargingrate(slowandfastchargerespectively).Bydefault,thechargersship
witha1.8Achargingrateselected.

5. Connectthethreegreenishyellowchargeterminalsonthebatterytothethreecharging
adaptersonthecharger.(Seefigure4.12)

6. Verifythatthechargersinputpowerrequirementsarecompatiblewithyourregionsline
voltagebeforeproceeding.ConnectthechargersACcordtotheoutletandturnonthe
frontpowerswitchtobegincharging.Thechargerindicatorlightswillshowredduring
chargeandgreenwhenchargingiscomplete.(Seefigure4.13)

7. DoNOToverchargethebatteries.Batteriesshouldbesupervisedwhilechargingandshould
notbeleftunattended.Ensurethatthebatteriesaredisconnectedassoonaschargingis
complete.

8. Underrarecircumstances,thechargermayfinishthechargingcycleprematurelybeforethe
batteryhasbeenfullycharged.Verifythatthebatteryhasbeenfullychargedbymeasuring
thevoltagesacrosseachofthe3dischargeterminals.Allvoltagesshouldberoughlyequal
andshouldbehigherthanthebatterysratedvoltageof12V.Also,factorinthedurationof
chargewhendecidingwhethertotrustthebatterychargersautomaticcutoff.Forexample,
a30Amphourcapacitybattery,iffullydepleted,shouldrequireaminimumof5.55hoursto
chargeifeachofthe3chargeportsaresettochargeatarateof1.8A[30Amphours/(3*
1.8A)=5.55hours].Inpractice,ittakesbatteriesabout50%longertochargethanthetime
spentdischargingthem.Ifyoususpectthatthechargingcyclemayhaveterminated
prematurely,disconnectandthenreconnectthebatteriesandrestartthechargeprocess.

9. Onceeachmonth,thepropulsionbattery(s)shouldbefullydischargedbeforerechargingto
avoidmemoryproblemsthatmaybecausedbyrepeatedlychargingpartiallydischarged
batteries.

electronicsbox,asshown.(Seefigure4.14)
2. StrapthebatteryinusingtheinstalledVelcrostrap.

3. Connectthe3to1dischargecabletothedischargeportsonthebattery.

4. ConnectthesinglelargeAndersonconnectortotheCCMasshown.(Seefigure4.14)

1. Identifytheport(left)outdrivebytheportlabelatopthesteeringhead.Installthisoutdriveto

2. Installthestarboard(STBDonright)outdrivetothestarboardmotormountusingtheremaining
quickreleasepin.

3. Removethe#10hexnuts(coloredred)fromthesteeringlinkagescrewsanddiscard,thesenuts
areprovidedtoshowtheproperassemblyofthesteeringlinkagecomponents.

4. Connecttheshortandlongsteeringlinktotheportoutdriveusingthe#1032x1screw,#10

5.3ChargingtheBatterySystems(ZBoat1800HighSpeed)

TheZBoat1800(HighSpeed)isnormallyequippedwiththree24V10AhNiMHbatterypacksand
asmallerbatterypackinsidethehandheldRCtransmitter.Itisimportantthattheuserfully
chargeeachbatterysystembeforedeployment.

Thepropulsionbatteriesoperatingendurancebetweenchargesrangesfrom30minutestoover
240minutes,dependingonoperatingspeedanduseofsteering.

Onceeachmonth,thepropulsionbattery(s)shouldbefullydischargedbeforerechargingto
avoidmemoryproblemsthatmaybecausedbyrepeatedlychargingpartiallydischarged
batteries.

Tochargetheremotecontroltransmittersbatterypack,refertothetransmittermanufacturers
instructionmanual.
1. Disconnectallshipboardconnectionstothebatteriesandremovethebattery(s)fromthe
boat.

2. Placethebatteriesinawellventilatedareaawayfromflammablehazardsensuringthe
batteriesarespacedsufficientlytoallowproperairflowduringcharging.

Important:ThebatterychargeterminalconsistsofaTamiyaconnectorthatistinted
greenishyellow.Thisconnectorwillbeusedforcharging.TheredandblackAnderson
connectorsareusedfordischarge(runtimeoperation)onlyandshouldneverbeusedto
chargethebattery.Dependingonthebattery,oneofbothtypesoftheseconnectorsmay
haveidentifyinglabels.(Seefigure5.10)

3. Plugeach24Vsmartchargerintoanacceptablewallunit,theLEDlightonthefrontofthe
unitsshouldilluminategreen.

4. ConnectthegreenTamiyaconnector(chargeterminal)totheoppositeTamiyaconnectoron
thecharger.Insurethatpolaritiesarecorrect(blackblack,redred).ThechargersLEDwill
beginflashingred.

5. Connectthesmallredthermistorconnectoronthebatterytotheoppositeredthermistor
connectiononthecharger.ThechargersLEDwillnowilluminateasteadyred.This
indicatesaproperlychargingbattery.

6. WhenchargingiscompletetheLEDwillchangetoilluminategreen.

7. DoNOToverchargethebatteries.Batteriesshouldbesupervisedwhilechargingandshould
notbeleftunattended.Ensurethebatteriesaredisconnectedassoonaschargingis
complete.

8. Underrarecircumstances,thechargermayfinishthechargingcycleprematurelybeforethe
batteryhasbeenfullycharged.Verifythatthebatteryhasbeenfullychargedbymeasuring

5.5 GPSAntennaMount

2. PlacetheGPSantennamountontothelidandinstallthethree1032x1inchscrews.

3. Turnthelidoverandinstallthenumber10washersandlocknuts.Tightensnuglyandwipe
wayexcesssilicone.

6.0DeploymentoftheZBoat1800

TheZBoat1800issimpletooperate,butsomebasicrulesandprecautionsshouldbefollowedto
deploytheboatsafely.Pleasereadthroughalloftheinstructionsbeforebeginninganywork.

SEEZBOATOPERATINGMANUAL

6.1ConductingaRangeTest

ItisimportanttotesttherangeoftheZBoat1800transmitteratthesitewheremeasurements
willbemade.Environmentalfactorscanaffecttransmitterrange,anditisimportanttoknowof
anylimitationsbeforedeployingtheboatinmovingwater.Powerlines,largemetalobjectsand
otherobstructionscanaffecttransmissionrange.

Toconductarangetest:

1. PoweruptheZBoatandhaveanobserverholdtheboatfirmlyinplace

2. Theobservershouldmonitorthesteeringservoperformanceastheoperatorwalks
awayfromtheboatwhilecontinuallymovingthesteeringjoystick.

3. Continueuntilthesteeringservonolongerrespondsorthedesiredrangebetween
operatorandboatisreached.

6.2LaunchandRetrievaloftheZBoat1800

TheZBoat1800shouldbelaunchedsternfirst(backend).Thiswillprotecttheoutdrivefrom
accidentalgroundingandpossiblepropellerdamage.

1. Thoroughlyfamiliarizeyourselfwiththewaytheboatrespondstothecontrolsbefore
deployinginfastmovingwater.

2. Whentheboatistravelingawayfromyouitwillrespondtocontrolsignalsasexpected.

3. Whentheboatisinbound(travelingtowardyou),thesamecontrolsignalscreatea
responsethataninexperiencedoperatormaynotexpect.Aninexperiencedoperators
firstresponseinanemergencymayguidetheboatinanunintendeddirection.

4. Toprolongthelifeofthebatteries,accelerateslowlyandminimizetheuseofrudders;
therudderservoconsumessignificantpower.

6.3EmergencyStop

SomeZBoatsareequippedwithanEmergencyStop(Fig.6.1).Pushingthisbuttonwillquickly
shutdownthepropulsionsystem.ToenablethemotorsaftertheEmergencyStophasbeen
pressed,thebuttonmustbepulleduptoitsnormalposition.Ensurethatthebuttonisupbefore
releasingtheboatintothewater.Otherwise,themotorswillnotfunction.Payloadelectronics
suchasathedepthsounderandGPSareunaffectedbytheEmergencyStopandwillremain
poweredevenafterthebuttonhasbeenpushed.

WhenperformingmaintenanceontheZBoatwherepersonalsafetymightbeatstake(ifclearing
debrisfromthepropellers,forexample),thesafestactionistofirstturnoffthemainpower
switchontheCCMandtodisconnectthebatteries.Note:TheEmergencyStopcablemustbe
pluggedintotheCCMasshowninFig.2.2inorderfortheEmergencyStopbuttontofunction.If
thiscableisdisconnected,themotorswillcontinuetorunevenaftertheEmergencyStophas

7.0Maintenance

TheZBoat1800isdesignedtobeeasytomaintain.

1. ToprolongthelifeoftheABShullandfinish,washwithmildsoapandwateraftereachuse.

2. Lubricatethesteeringballjointswith3in1orequivalentoilandregularlycheckthe
tightnessofallboltsandconnectors.

3. Checkthedecklidgasketforcuts,cracksordeformation.Thisgasketsealsthe
instrumentationareafromwaterintrusionandshouldbecheckedfrequently.

4. Ifoperatinginsaltwater,rinsehullandmotorswithfreshwateraftereachuse.

8.0ZBoatWarranty

TheOceanscienceGroup,Ltdmakeseveryefforttoassureitsproductsmeetthehighestquality,
reliabilityanddurabilitystandardsandwarrantstotheoriginalpurchaserorpurchasingagency
thateachZBoat1800befreefromdefectsinmaterialsorworkmanshipforaperiodofoneyear
fromdateofshipment.

Warrantydoesnotapplytodefectsduedirectlyorindirectlytomisuse,negligenceoraccidents,
repairsoralterationsoutsideofourfacilities,useoftheZBoatforpurposesotherthanwater
measurements,orusewithinstrumentsweighingmorethan25lbs.

Oceanscienceisnotresponsibleforlossofboat,instruments,damagetoproperty,injuryor
deathassociatewiththeuseofanyofitsproductsorproductsthatmaybeincludedorusedwith
Oceanscienceproducts.Oceansciencedoesnotwarrantthirdpartyproductssoldby
