Thanksgiving

The Pilgrims sailed to America on the Mayflower. They arrived in the

United States of America on December 11, 1620. In their homeland of England,
these persons were members of the English Separatist Church. Prior to their
arrival in the United States, the Pilgrims fled to Holland, also known as the
Netherlands, to escape religious persecution. Although the Pilgrims reveled more
tolerance for their religious beliefs here, they eventually became dissatisfied with
the way of life of the Dutch. Thus, the Pilgrims began their pilgrimage to
America.

Thanksgiving

Plymouth Rock was the site of the Pilgrim’s landing on December 11,
1620. One hundred two persons sailed to America aboard the Mayflower. The
Pilgrims were not used to the climate of America and within one year of their
arrival, and due primarily to the first, harsh winter, only 51 Pilgrims remained.
With the help of the Native Americans, the first harvest was plentiful. As a result,
91 Native Americans and the remaining Pilgrims held a feast together. This
particular celebration lasted three days.

However, not everyone in the original colonies approved of this proclamation.

wrote for the support of such a holiday. After 40 years of writing, she was heard!
In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln announced that Thanksgiving would be a

the Thanksgiving holiday has since been adjusted several times. However, in
1941, it was officially protected as a legal holiday to be held on the last Thursday

Wampanoag People

Thousands of years ago, Native Americans settled in forests, fields, and

coastlines. The Wampanoag culture existed among the eastern part of America.
Hence, their name refers to “eastern people” and “people of dawn”. In the early
part of their culture, each territory was known as a separate group such as Nausea,
Pawtucket, and Pocomoke. Each group, or community, had the leadership and
authority of their own particular space.
