Quran Through different times

By Khadijah
During the time of prophet
Muhammad (SAW) the Quran was not in
book form and hundreds of the prophets
companions were Huffaz who had
memorized Quran by heart. Prophet
Muhammad (SAW) made plans for the
Quran to be written down so whenever
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) got a
message from angel Jibraeel(AS) he
would make sure some one would write it
down on leather, cloth, animal skin, and etc. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) would also
make sure that the people would put it in order so it wont be incorrect. The verses
were written down in front of him so they wont make a mistake.

When prophet Muhammad (SAW) passed away in 633 CE, Sayyidna Abu
Bakar Siddique(RA) became the Khalifah. The need of the whole compilation of the
Quran,in form of book was seen in the battle of Yamamha and other battles where
many Huffaz were killed. Sayyidna Umar (RA) saw what was happening and
suggested to the Khalifah, that they record the Quran in the book form, so that later
generations can learn from it and it does not leave the earth with the dying Huffaz.
At first the Khalifah disagreed because the Prophet(SAW) had never said to do so,
but once he thought about it, he agreed. After they agreed they went to Hazrat Zaid
bin Thabit, because he was a good writer and used to write down the Quranic aayat
in front of Muhammad(SAW). When Zaid bin Thabit collected all the writings from
the Sahaba, and compiled them in a book form. As he wrote he made sure there was
another Hafiz along with him, who could verify what he was writing.

AfterSayyidna Abu Bakar Siddique (RA) died the Khalifah was Sayyidna
Umar(RA), who carried the same book. After him the book was handed over to his
daughter Hazrat Hafsah (RA) who was also the wife of Prophet Mohammed(SAW).

When Sayyidna Uthman (RA) became Khalifah, Islam had spread through
many regions and people started reciting the Quran in seven different ways. When
Sayyidna Uthman (RA) learnt about it, he thought that it was wrong and wanted to
make sure it was read in only one way hence he borrowed the Quran from Hazrat
Hafsah (RA) and got a group of four companions to make transcripts of the original
copy, and to put it in one consistent form, so that it is always read the same way.
Several copies were made of the original and sent out to faraway lands. What we
read today is the Sayyidna Uthmans (RA) work. Later on people made
improvements as in Fathha, Dammah and Kasra. The Quran has remained and will
remain the same forever.
