- First year exam, spring 2014

The purpose
To conclude the first study year you must complete an interdisciplinary project, which will capture
essential parts of all disciplines from the program's first year. The project aims to combine the topics
you have worked with, thus creating the basis for an interdisciplinary project exam.
The project
You (The group) will develop a concept and an interactive digital prototype for a company or another
external partner. You shall argue how the concept is creating value for the customer. Concept and
prototype must be documented in a report. This requires that you during the project must involve and
apply theories, methods and relevant tools from all 4 topics. It is emphasized that the partial
conclusions within the respective disciplines are used and expanded in the other disciplines, so the
project appears as a whole.
Compulsory content
Business
You need to manage and document your project using a development method (project management). In
the report you need to clarify as well as visualize how you have used the method.
In the report you need to argue why and how your project adds value to the chosen organization. In
addition, you should argue how the organization can use change management to secure the
implementation and anchoring of the product/concept.
Its important that your concept is based on extensive knowledge of the company. As a part of the
project you must assess and discuss which theories, models and tools are most relevant in creating a
clear picture of the company and its identity. You should only use theory and analysis that provides
value to your report.

Communication
You must set up a communications plan that describes your concept. In addition, you must use
relevant theories and communications tools to identify the opportunities of the sender in regards to
digital communication and marketing. The theories and tools should be based on the areas that have
been covered on first and second semester.
Your concept must communicate to a specific target audience on the basis of which you create relevant
personas. Also, your prototype needs to be validated throughout the process by means of user testing
and research.

Design
You must develop a concept and you must work on analysis and argument for design choices in
relation to audience, message and identity. You should also argue the use of design principles in
relation to this, and work with the design from a deliberate stylistic choice.
You should also explain your reflection on the usability of the website, e.g. smartphone / tablet. The
design must relate to esthetics, visual communication and functionality. The design must be
documented from sketches to final concept.
Your project must also include a design manual (placed in the appendix section of the report).
Interaction
We require that you work independently with the technologies from the curriculum of the first two
semesters. This means that both client-side programming (HTML+CSS+Javascript) as well as server
side programming (PHP) must be represented.
The report should explain the technical and functional requirements for the product how the product
is structured and how key elements have been programmed. It is important that the report contains
your own explanations and reflections on the code's functionality, since this is your evidence that the
code has been independently acquired and understood.
The source code for key elements of the product must also be transparent, accessible and with
comments.
Any usage of 3
rd
party code is allowed, as long as it is clear which code it is and where it is from.

Formalities
The project starts on Monday 28
th
of April 2014
The project is conducted in groups of 3-4 students. The project consists of a digital product
Printed report and product (on CD-ROM or memory stick) must be submitted in 4 copies.
Place the CD-ROM or memory stick in a closed pocket attached inside the report.
Project is delivered on Thursday 22
th
of May no later than 12.00 in room AS.03 (be aware to
deliver in due time due to the fact that queues occurs).
It must also be handed in to Fronter in the delivery folder 'Thesis second semester" (please
write Group No on your hand-in). Report and Appendix must be assembled into a single PDF
file.
There must be a link on the front of your report for a working prototype on the Internet.
The report must have a maximum length of 10 standard pages of text + 8 pages per group
member (i.e. a group of 3 delivers max. 34 pages). A standard page is 2400 characters.
Illustrations, figures, etc. and the content in the appendix do not count in this calculation.
All main screens should be printed out and included in the report or as an appendix.
Although all team members are responsible for the overall project, the report should indicate
what each group member contributed to the project.
On the front of the report the following information must be available: The first-year exam,
Spring 2014 MDC, Business Academy Aarhus. Project title. The URL of the digital prototype.
Names of all group members and supervisors.
1st and 2 semesters literature can be used. In addition, you can use any other relevant
literature. Remember complete references in connection with referring, citations, models and
charts. Remember also to include a bibliography and table of content.

Exam
The exam is oral and individual and consists of a presentation of the project and an examination based
on the product and report.
Examinations are held in the language of teaching. The Academy may, in exceptional cases waive this.

Procedure
The oral examination begins with the group's presentation of the project. Remember that teachers and
censor are familiar with the report and the product, so the presentation should not be a mere
repetition. The presentation should add to the project topics that the group find is vital for the
project's further development.
Presentation time is calculated as 5 minutes per. group member. This means that a 3-piece group has a
total of 15 minutes for the presentation, a 4-piece group has 20 minutes.
The group presentation will be followed by a 20-minute individual examination about the project.
These 20 minutes will be initiated by the student, starting the first few minutes with something you
yourself find essential for the project. It may be an academic topic you would like to deepen or other
project relevant substance.
During the individual examination questions could be posed in all topics of teaching and curriculum
for the first year. The examination covers all four subject areas.

Rating
The grade is individual based on presentation, oral examination, prototype and report in an overall
assessment of:
Product
Report
o Use of relevant theory in relation to problem formulation (problem oriented)
o The argument for the enterprise choice for example. design and interaction design
o Use of appropriate professional knowledge
Presentation: Well designed form and content
Examination: Technical overview regarding the project and exam syllabus of first and 2
semester
