The Board of Educaton is happy to provide you with its frst Student Success Annual Report. In District 228,
we couldnt be prouder of our high schoolers! We are amazed at their goal setng abilites, their drive to
achieve those goals, and their caring and compassionate personalites. As you will see, our students are
well-rounded and enjoy success in the classroom, in actvites, and in the community.

Our Students are Leaders!
Many students partcipated in the Board of Educatons Students in Leadership meetng. They atended a
pre-meetng workshop to learn the roles of Board Members and Administrators, and then they ran an entre
Board meetng. They also provided input on student-related issues.

Esmeralda Aguilar, Michelle Genta and Vanessa Guerrero
received the Hispanic Heritage Essay Award for their responses
to the topic, Why is Educaton Important for the Latno
Community in Todays Economy?
Ecology Club students Teagan Doyle, Sara Papiez, Annie
Samoska, Erika Arias and Caitlin Chismark were featured in a
video viewed in Washington D.C. about bird migraton.
Nicholas Frangella was recognized as a Natonal Merit
Scholarship Semifnalist. Kevin Bajzek was named a
Commended Student in the 2014 Natonal Merit Scholarship
Program.
Mark Barr, Sean Grant and Tyler Banovich were selected as members of the 2013-14 Academic All-State Football Team.
Helwa Saleh and Anna Baggili placed second in the Photography and Writng competton at the Walsworth Publishing
Companys Yearbook Camp. Anna also placed third in the State Journalism Finals for Feature Photography.
Six FCCLA students received medals at the State Competton. Winning bronze medals were Jemilyn Hernandez and
Cecelia Sandoval for Preschool Lesson and Kaitlin Alton for Job Interview. Winning a silver medal was Aurora Aguilar
for Cookie Baking. Winning gold medals were Takia Reese and Christyle Smith for Childrens Literature.
Lorena Villanueva won Best of School for her charcoal drawing at the South Suburban College Regional High School
Art Show. Yasmine Stanford and Brandi Watson competed in the Omega Psi Phi Talen Search at Governors State
University. Brandi earned a 1st Place medal and Yasmine a 2nd Place medal.
Anna Baggili placed third in the State Journalism Finals for Feature Photography at Eastern Illinois University.
Delaney Smith was honored by the Tinley Park Fire Department as the overall Fire Preventon Poster Contest Winner
for high school art students.
Anne Amann, Kathryn Hayes, Ben McClerklin, and Andrew Milen were Voice of Democracy fnalists.
Annalisse Scot was voted the SSC Sofball Player of the Year.
Jenna Beardsley was awarded the Hugh OBrian Youth Leadership Scholarship (HOBY).
Tifany Caraos and Ismael Dominguez were
awarded scholarships from the Board of
Trustees at South Suburban College for being
in the top 15% of their class.
Tanner Jackson qualifed for the Illinois
Music Educators Associaton (IMEA) All-State
Festval. He won 2nd Place in the ILMEA
Student Compositon Contest for the second
year in a row.
Maddie Baxa was named the SSC Girls Basketball
Player of the Year.
Our students determine where their interests lie, in actvites, sports, fne arts and more. Once they get involved
in the actvity or sport of their choice, they set their sites high and accomplish great things.
Jack Cascone created the Panther Project to aid 8th graders from Arbor Park to high school. He and Abby Simon
worked with Molly Brennan, Shelby Grant, Tifany Jones, Sarah Jopek, Lindsay Lannen, Bobby Mathius, Brian Munoz,
Morghan Schnell, and Amanda Wetzel to create presentatons and discussions for the students.
Jenna Rivera was awarded the SSC Girls Soccer Player of the Year.
Tifany Jones captured 3rd Place for Human Resource Management at the Business Professional Associatons
Natonal Competton.
Jef Sprayberry atained a place on the American Volleyball Coaches Associatons All-American Watch List.
Nick Henderson starred in a leading role in the Broadway hit Cooley High the
Class Reunion.
Taylor Adway captured a place as one of the Sun-Times Top 50 Boys Basketball
Players.
Mathew Sanders won the village of Hazel Crest Vehicle Stcker contest.
Kate Maurer was named to the Dream Team of yearbook members by
Walsworth Publishing.
Natalie Cameron took Third Place, Jonathan Crim was First Runner-Up, and
Lorena Villanueva was the Grand Prize Winner at the 2014 1st Congressional
District Artstc Discovery Competton.
Danielle Murawski won 2nd Place in the Metra Safety Poster & Essay Contest.
Nicolas Rios, Melissa Patno and Michelle Patno received awards at the Vogt
Visual Arts Contest.
Britany Condon became the IHSA State Journalism Champion in the Yearbook
Copywritng Event.
In additon to planning for a future in college or a specifc vocaton, many of our
students have completed certfcaton courses that will ensure success in various
careers

Kind-hearted and compassionate are two ways to describe District 228 students. They never hesitate to work
individually or in groups to help those in need. Whether it is raising funds for charites, helping the military,
feeding the needy, or recognizing others locally, our students are happy to lend a hand.

While there is not a community service graduaton requirement in District 228, our students understand
the importance of giving back to the communites in which they live. At local events, you will fnd them
working as greeters, hosts and assistants, as well as bakers, gardeners, recyclers and more.
