As a budding engineer, I have always been fascinated by the idea of product development

and processing technology. Conception of ideas and development of systems that deliver, are the
goals that I have set for myself.
My research interests encompass VLSI and Embedded Applications in related fields, in
particular
VLSI/FPGA design for Wireless Communication systems. Wireless communications have
been
growing exponentially and have become ubiquitous in the past two decades. VLSI technology is
the driving force that enables these low-power high-performance devices.
In view of the pressing market demands for power efficient wireless communication chips
specially
to achieve a cost effective low-power solution for portable systems, the research group at my
institute, of which I am a part has been trying to develop state-of-the-art RF front end design
capabilities. As a part of this group, I am working on the RF subsystem of ISRO Student
Nanosatellite
Project. Currently, I am also working on the use of abstract states formalism and
prototype verification system in the design of reliable and fault tolerant systems. In this project
we
explore the power of formal verification in a top-down design strategy using the formalism of
abstract state machines and theorem prove in order to design and refine (implement) fault tolerant
systems and algorithms. These methods can be combined with a bottom-up design methodology
that uses model checking in order to guarantee that simple components or modules fulfill the
needed specifications.
My aim is to work on intelligent applications to realize the benefits of omnipresent connectivity
employing network interface cards (NICs) which use an array of DSP processors, custom VLSI
ASICs and FPGAs for baseband signal processing to interact with various RF modules and host
processor. Also I would like to explore high performance algorithm alternatives through
computer
aided design tools for rapid prototyping and hardware and software co-design of embedded
systems
for high speed wireless LANs and WCDMA cellular systems.
Recently, I have been enthusiastic to learn about Encryption and Decryption techniques and
related algorithms and would like to implement the same practically in this summer project. The
algorithms would require software and hardware co-simulation. Thus, it would be great if I could
start working on some aspects of implementation including algorithmic simulations, translating
algorithm to hardware modules, SOC designs, and optimization of speed, area and power, layout
synthesis, timing analysis. We could proceed either with FPGA implementation or chip tape out.
Next-generation computing systems will be highly integrated using wireless networking and there
is considerable scope for further research and systematic application of advanced techniques in
this
field. Thus, this internship would be a great opportunity for me to gain a broader and more
complete perspective on this area.
As the internship is of a duration of 8 weeks, I would do my best to understand, analyse, research
on the specific areas you allot me to work on and integrate it into my project. I am sure this will
be
a great learning process where I could get exposed to various facets of integrated design. I would
be very happy to expand my horizons and work in varied directions when I am inducted as a part
of
the internship programme. And keeping in mind, my future goals, an opportunity of dialogue with
eminent academicians in the educational setup of IIT Kanpur would be a huge stepping stone as I
embark on a career in research.
