mark at Coffee Creek got together to form a book club, they didnt know it would be so much fun and become such an important part of their lives. The group of about a dozen residents and friends gets together monthly to discuss the as- signed novel or memoir and to immerse them- selves in the setting and culture of the book. When they read Khaled Hosseinis The Kite Run- ner, set mostly in Afghan- istan, the book club gath- ering featured Middle Eastern food and a study of the Quran and Islamic customs. For The Great Gatsby, martinis and vintage clothing, such as flapper dresses, were part of the program. For The Orphan Train, one of the residents set up her late husbands model train set. Not fussy Joan Crooks, who moved to Touchmark four years ago, is a charter member and organizer of the group that began two years ago. She said the group members are not fussy about the books they choose, which has enabled them to sample a variety of genres. She said there is a vibrant discussion about each book. I enjoy that when we see each other around, we ask each other what page we are on in the book and talk about what is going on in the book. Crooks calls this book club her favorite out of the many she has participated in over the years. While club members did not actually participate in a mock fight-to-the- death-style party when they read the popular young adult novel The Hunger Games by Su- zanne Collins, they did en- joy the story, and they un- derstand why young peo- ple like it so much. My favorite book was The Kite Runner, a story about friendship and re- demption, Crooks said Food for thought Adrienne Parker said preparation for the most re- cent meeting was a group effort, with the women re- viewing The Aviators Wife, a book about Charles Lindberghs wife. The table featured a centerpiece of a model air- plane and historic photos. Parker especially appre- ciates Touchmarks dining services staff. For this month, they made sack lunches, which is what Anne Lindbergh would prepare for her hus- bands voyages, she said. Each book evokes dif- ferent responses, and this month our group was dis- mayed to learn how shab- bily Lindbergh treated his wife, Parker said. Touchmark provides an environment where resi- dents can participate in such activities, said Melis- sa Mahaffey, executive director. Crooks works with an Edmond bookstore to get small discounts on paper- backs, but many members also use e-readers, be- cause they like the ability to change font sizes and lighting. JOAN CROOKS THE OKLAHOMAN | NEWSOK.COM SATURDAY, JULY 5, 2014 II 5C COMMUNITY The Pet Food Pantry of Oklahoma City received its largest corporate donation to date when AT&T repre- sentatives presented pan- try founder Kim Pempin a $5,000 check as part of AT&Ts annual communi- ty excellence award. For some, pets are their only family or friend, Pempin said. With this contribution, we can help ensure that those in need do not have to choose be- tween feeding themselves or feeding their pet. The pantry is a nonprof- it organization whose vol- unteers are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of people and their pets by providing pet food to low-income seniors, the homeless and veterans. The award is given an- nually to a charity nomi- nated by a selected AT&T community forum leader, an AT&T customer who offers outstanding advice, tips and tools to other cus- tomers in an online forum. One of this years AT&T community forum leaders is Edmond resident Elena Harris, who nominated the food pantry as a beneficiary. I am so pleased to be able to help support the Pet Food Pantrys efforts to provide pet food so that individuals dont have to give up their pet because they lack the resources to feed their animals, Harris said. Five charities across the nation were chosen as AT&T beneficiaries this year. AT&T GIVES DONATION TO PET FOOD PANTRY AT&T representatives awarded $5,000 to the Pet Food Pantry of Oklahoma City.
