ABOUT THE CFT50 DIGITAL CORIOLIS TRANSMITTER
The Foxboro

CFT50 Coriolis Mass Flow Transmitter features a patented digital

processing system that allows mass fow meters to operate uninterrupted during
traditionally diffcult to measure applications, including two-phase fow. Capable of
performing in batch applications starting with empty fowtube conditions, the CFT50
is designed to control the Coriolis meter throughout all stages of gas void fraction
for continuous, precise measurement.
TECHNICAL CHALLENGE
Many food producers encounter serious problems in the accurate measurement of
process material fows containing both liquid and gas.
For example, the popular confectionery ingredient chocolate, a viscous substance
produced in batches, inevitably retains entrained gas in the form of air, in evenly
distributed bubbles or larger slugs. The industrys inability to accurately measure
this liquid/gas fow has spawned a host of production problems. These include
process interruptions and downtime, wasted material, costly rework, poor product
quality, and expensive, time-consuming workarounds.
One problem is with the batch processing. In between batches of chocolate, lines
must be completely cleaned out with caustic and demineralized water to meet
sanitary requirements. Thus, the system is empty when the next batch of chocolate
arrives. In a typical, costly workaround, producers must startup and pack the
line with 6 or 7 gallons of unmetered chocolate before any conventional Coriolis
fowmeter begins to indicate a measurement.
In plants running three shifts per production day, with at least two and often more
startup/shutdown cycles per shift, this loss alone can provide troublesome bottom-line
impact.

This is the starting from empty problem that, until now, even advanced Coriolis meters have been unable
to handle. They are unable to accurately measure chocolate containing bubbles or slug fows that occur
while the line is running, exhibiting bursts of no measurement, or wrong measurement or even stall out
completely.
In these last issues, starting from empty can overwhelm the meters software. This results in purging the
line and restarting the batch from scratch, wasting material, and accumulating downtime.
In many confectionery plants, Coriolis meter manufacturers have told managers that the problem is not
the meter but their process. Therefore, another expensive workaround was required; plants were forced
to construct expensive upstream air elimination reservoirs in attempt to get their process measurements
under control. However, air elimination can never be entirely successful. In addition, such reservoirs, vented
to the atmosphere, raise new concerns regarding sanitary food production.
FOXBORO SOLUTION
Some leading confectionery processors have discovered a reliable answer to this problematic liquid/gas
fow. The Invensys innovative CFT50 digital Coriolis fow transmitter, developed and built by Foxboro
uses breakthrough technology to accurately measure fows containing entrained gas, without stalls, or
stoppage.
Foxboros patented software-based system uniquely prevents the erratic fowtube vibrations that cause
measurement failures with problem liquid/gas fows. The transmitter maintains a digitally precise fow
measurement, while simultaneously retuning the drive of the Coriolis fowtube every half-cycle of the
drive frequency.
The Invensys transmitter built on Foxboro technology and developed in a collaborative effort with
Oxford University, uses an innovative approach to digital Coriolis fow metering and is based on several
key advances. The fowtube drive signal is digitally synthesized, providing excellent meter control in
challenging conditions. In addition, dynamic response is swift and independent trials have shown that
the meter can respond to a step change in fow within 25 milliseconds (versus traditional response times
measured in the tens of seconds), as its sophisticated algorithms correct for the effects of entrained gas.
RESULTS
Invensys clients have confrmed that the CFT50 transmitter shows the remarkable ability to meter
viscous materials accurately during the diffcult startup and end phases of their batch processes. These
processors report that the meter starts up fast and provides batch fow measurement estimated as
accurate to within half a percent of actual fow rate a hitherto unobtainable result with a viscous
material like chocolate running under batch-from-empty conditions. Previous meters were fortunate
to get within 10 percent of actual fow. Plants can now dispense with pre-measurement line packing, air
elimination systems, and other costly, time-consuming workarounds. The Invensys Foxboro CFT50 simply
keeps measuring chocolate, batch in, batch out, without stalls, stops, or shutdowns.
