The purpose of this PowerPoint is to train and/or remind

middle school students how to use the Dewey Decimal

Classification system to find non-fiction books in the
school library. The information can also be used to find
non-fiction books in public libraries that use DDC.

Tracking Down Books with
Dewey
Marty the
book cat
presents:
Because I ate
the
bookworm.
Marty the book cat needs a few non-fiction books for some research
hes doing. Hes going to the library to check out whats available.

Oh, hey! Im just
about to go to the
library to check
out some cool
books. Want to
come along?
1. What is a call number?

2. Who was Melvil Dewey?

3. What is Dewey Decimal?

4.If you wanted to find a book on panthers, where would you look?

5. If you wanted to find a book about medicine and diseases, where would you look?

6. If you wanted to find a book about literature, where would you look?

7. What about it you wanted to find a book about another language.

8. Where would you look if you wanted information on U.S History?

Finding books in the library doesnt have to be hard. You just have to
figure out your books call numbers. You can search the online catalog
to figure out what your books call numbers are.
Heres a link to Sandtown Middle Schools online catalog.

I cant find
the books I
need.
Youll notice all the books
in our library have
combinations of numbers
and letters.

Fiction books only have
letters.

Non-fiction books have
both letters and numbers.
The numbers come from
the Dewey Decimal
Classification system.
Oh, I get it!
Call numbers
are like
addresses for
the books.
What is this
Dewey Decimal
System? Can I
eat it?
Created in 1873 by
