CIN 514 SYSTEM SUPPORT

TUTORIAL 2 WEEK 3:

1. Which file system is preferred for windows XP installation?
NTFS

2. FAT and FAT32 volumes on a system can be migrated to the NTFS format
without losing data. TRUE/FALSE? Justify your answer.
True.
3. Explain the term auditing with regards computers.
The term audit means that internal of the computer is not documented.
State the long form of EFS and discuss the benefit of having EFS file systems.
Encrypting File System
Enables users to encrypt individual files, folders, or entire data drives. Because EFS
provides strong encryption through industry-standard algorithms and public key
cryptography, encrypted files are confidential even if an attacker bypasses system
security

4. What is the difference between FAT and NTFS?
FAT -File Allocation Table is a primary computer file system
NTFS-Is the standard file system of Windows?

5. What effect does file compression have on performance?
Compression will always slow down your computer because it induces a certain latency
in accessing files, because the processor always have to decompress before being able
to do anything with the data.

6. By default, what level of access do all users have to files in a folder that is
moved to the Shared Documents folder? (Hint: Check the advanced settings
in the Security tab.)
Being a multi-user operating system, OS X sequesters settings and personal data in
separate home folders, which are accessed when the respective user logs in. By default,
the contents of each user's folder are off-limits to another user, which is good for
security but can be a burden if one user would like to share files or folders with
another.

7. By default, what level of access do all users have to files in a new shared
folder (also called a network share) when accessing the files through the
network or the share itself?
NTFS permissions in Windows differ depending on whether they are applied to files or
to folders these standard file and folder permissions are NTFS special permissions:
read (R)
write (W)
execute (X)

8. Which NTFS permission is required to be able to delete a file?

The delete or the (D) permission of the File Folder or the File.

9. 10. List all the shared folder permissions, from the least amount of access
rights to the most access rights.

11. In a Windows XP workgroup, if a file is stored in a shared folder on
another computer using all the default permissions, what access to the file
does a limited user account have from a different computer on the same
network?
Depending on the options specified users to perform the following actions:
List names of folders and files

12. You are the desktop support technician in your office. You just installed
Windows XP Professional on four computers. You want to create a folder to

share documents with all employees, but you dont want users to delete or
change the documents. What should you do to achieve this?

Depending on the options specified users will be given a Read only access where
they will be able to read the files in the folder but would not be eligible to make
changes on the document files in the folder.

13. Case Study: ABC Corporation Resource Permissions
Bobby is an IT administrator for the ABC Corporation. He is setting up a new
file server that will house multiple directories and files for use by the various
departments within the company. There are several different departments,
and each department has special security requirements for the resources it
will have stored on the new server.
Case A
The sales department has the need for a shared folder on the server that all
members of its traveling sales force can access. Members of the Sales group
should be able to read and write documents to this folder, and other employees
of the company should be allowed read capability to the folder if they have a valid
user account on the companys network. How should permissions be configured
for the Sales folder?
If a user belongs to two or more groups, and these groups have different permissions
on a given share, the users ability to access the folder over the network can be
calculated by two rules:
The effective permission is the least restrictive (most permissive) permission, as
in this example:
