From Camp Meeting 2008
 VIEWPOINT
MY WIFE, DEBBIE, and I had the privilege of attending camp meetings in Port-
land, Oregon; Century, Florida; and Fredericktown, Missouri, during this past
summer. The messages and testimonies that you will read in this issue are rep-
resentative of what we heard in all three camp meetings and what is heard in
our churches around the world throughout the year. On the front cover of this
magazine, for example, you see Brother Isaac Adigun, who pastors our London
church and has oversight of our work in Western Europe, preaching a sermon at
Darrel D. Lee the Portland camp meeting on the evening of July . You will find an excerpt of
Superintendent his sermon, entitled “Just Ask,” on page eleven.

We have become person-
ally acquainted with Brother
Cobb and his wife over the
years, and are familiar with his inspiring testimony. (If you would like to read
his full story, write to us requesting the publication, “In Prison, But Free!”)
Shortly after Brother Walter turned twenty, he was sent to prison where he
spent most of the next fifteen years. He states that he was more corrupt after
almost ten years in prison than he was when originally sent there. In fact, at one
point he was released, only to be imprisoned again after committing further
crimes. But one night he knelt in the Jefferson County Jail and poured his heart
out to the Lord. In a moment of time, Jesus changed his heart, which the best
help of man had failed to rehabilitate. From that day until now, God has held
him steady. He served the remainder of his prison time living a victorious life
and was released in October of 1986. While still incarcerated, the Lord sanctified
him. One day, while he was working for the warden behind a garden shack, the
Lord baptized him with the Holy Ghost and Fire. The challenges of life did not
end with his release from prison, but he has remained true to the commitments
he made to the Lord that night he prayed through to salvation.
May accounts like this one and others you read in this magazine, along with
all the material included in this edition, inspire you to hold to the anchor of the
Gospel that Jesus still offers today.

Pray and
Pray Again!
Pete’s boots were a silent indicator
of his persistence in prayer.

N
ot long after I became a Christian, I was doing some painting on our

by Darrel Lee pair of boots at the back door. After the third or fourth time I noticed
those boots, I thought, That’s a bit odd. I wonder why that pair of boots is always
here around the noon hour?
Later, I learned the boots belonged to a man named Pete DeBusk. Pete was
working at the Willamette Industries sawmill in Dallas. On his lunch break, he
would come down to the church, take off his dusty boots so they
would not leave track marks, and then go somewhere in a back
corner and begin to pray. Pete had unsaved children,
and he was bringing them before the Lord. He
did this day after day. I never did run into
Pete while I did my paint job—I just saw
his boots.
The Bible encourages us to pray persistently.
We read in James 5:17-18, “Elias was a man sub-
ject to like passions as we are, and he prayed ear-
nestly that it might not rain: and it rained not
on the earth by the space of three years and six
months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave
rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.” Notice
that phrase, “he prayed again.” I like the idea that
we can pray again!
I also like the idea that we can come to camp
meeting again. The fact that we came last year
did not prevent us from coming this year.
The fact that we have come this year will
not prevent us from coming next year,
if circumstances are right. So it is with
prayer. We prayed yesterday and we
will pray again today. If Jesus tarries,
we will pray again tomorrow.
Higher Way  
 Examples in James
Answers to our prayers do not
always come immediately. That fact is
brought out by several examples in the
fifth chapter of James: the farmer, the
prophets, the patriarch Job, and the
sick and afflicted.
We read in the seventh verse that
“the husbandman waiteth for the
precious fruit of the earth, and hath
long patience for it.” Some time back,
a friend sent me some tomato seeds
from the Midwest. I told him that I
would plant them and let him know
in seventy days how things turned out.
So I did plant them—in fact, I planted
them that very day. I have been going
back each day and looking. At first
there was nothing, but now there is a
little plant, and I have been checking
its progress. The fact that I went yes-
terday did not prevent me from going
back today. That is typical of farmers.
I have worked for farmers and I know
they go back again and again, looking
at their crops.
Each day, if we have a heart that is
looking forward to the return of Jesus,
we anticipate the fact that the Lord
could come that day. If He does not
come, we anticipate it again the next
day. If we see a cloud in the sky, we
might wonder if this is the day the
Lord will come in the clouds. If we
think about an event coming up, the
thought may cross our minds, “If the
Lord tarries . . .” He has not come yet,
but we look again in faith to that day
when He will return to earth.
  Higher Way
The prophets faithfully delivered
the Word of God again and again,
afflictions, persecutions, and the lack
of response notwithstanding. They
were persecuted, but God had given
them a message to proclaim, and they
proclaimed it. Whether individuals
responded or ignored the message,
they would go out the next day and
deliver it again.
Job prayed for his children
We read of Job and the fact that he
continually made offerings on behalf
of his children. He was the family

priest, and he took his responsibility
as spiritual head of the household very
seriously. At a certain point in time
during the year, Job would call them
all together. He would proceed to make
an offering on behalf of each child. It
says, “Thus did Job continually” (Job
1:5), so he did it once and then he did
it again and again and again. It was a
pattern that he established throughout
his life.
The sick and afflicted are given the
formula by which to avail themselves
of what is provided through the Blood
of Jesus. When we find ourselves sick,
we are told to call for the elders of the
church and have them anoint us with
oil in the name of the Lord. When we
do so, we have the promise that “the
prayer of faith shall save the sick, and
the Lord shall raise him up.” You know
what happens when you are ill or even
just under the weather. You are prayed
for and you pray for yourself. If you do
not get better immediately, you pray
again. If you are not better the next
day, you pray yet again. We do not stop
praying just because we have prayed
once. We pray again, and we see that in
the life of Elijah.
Elijah “prayed again”
James says that Elijah was a man
“subject to like passions as we are.” In
other words, he had days when he was
encouraged and days, perhaps, when
he was less than encouraged. However,
he understood the value of praying
again. God had revealed to Elijah that
there would be punishment sent upon
the nation of Israel because they had
disobeyed Him. We are told that Elijah
prayed that it would not rain, and it
did not rain. He was given the courage
to stand before wicked King Ahab and
say, “As the Lord God of Israel liveth,
before whom I stand, there shall not be
dew nor rain these years, but accord-
ing to my word” (1 Kings 17:1).
God answered his prayer and there
was no rain. James 5:17 refers to a
point three-and-one-half years later
when the time came for God to send
rain on the earth once again. Elijah
was to approach Ahab and let it be
known that God was going to do it. So,
he prayed again three-and-one-half
years later. God answered that prayer
and sent rain. Once again the earth
was blessed with crops.
However, Elijah’s prayer for rain
was not the only time during those
three-and-one-half years that he
prayed. I am sure he prayed for cour-
age to stand before Ahab. Ahab was
not the most congenial fellow around
town, so it took boldness to approach
him and declare to him how God said
it would be.
After Elijah did that, no doubt he
prayed about his next step, for the
Lord revealed to him that he needed to
flee. He told the prophet, “Hide thyself
by the brook Cherith, that is before
Jordan” (1 Kings 17:3). God let Elijah
know that He had commanded the
ravens to feed him. That was revealed
as Elijah communicated with the Lord.
Elijah went, and he set up camp by that
brook. He drank of the brook during
the time of drought, and the ravens
came and gave him bread and flesh in
the morning and bread and flesh in
the evening.
After awhile, however, the brook
dried up. Elijah was a man of prayer,
so he knew what to do. He prayed
again and God revealed to him that it
was time to leave the brook and go to
the city of Zarephath, where a widow
woman had been commanded to sus-
tain him.
It pays to pray! If you need direction
in life, try praying. Even when you do
not feel you need direction, you need
it, so pray anyway. God will guide you
step by step. He may not unfold the
whole plan before you, but He certainly
will guide you as you need to be guided
if only you pray, and then pray again.
Elijah did as God commanded,
and when he came to Zarephath, that
widow was gathering sticks to prepare
her last meal. She had just a little oil
and flour left when Elijah showed up.
However, God had revealed to her that
He would be sending His prophet her
way, and had instructed her to take
care of him. When the prophet said,
“Go and fix food for me first and God
will provide for you,” she did as he
said. And God honored both of them
by sustaining them through the rest of
that time of drought.
The day came when Elijah was told,
“Go, shew thyself to Ahab; and I will
send rain upon the earth” (1 Kings
18:1). Elijah obeyed. Ahab had been
searching for him with the intent of
killing him, but Elijah had prayed and
prayed again, so he knew he was on
good ground. He went and proposed
a contest to the king. He said, “We are
going to meet on Mt. Carmel and we
will see whose god is the true God. If
Baal be God, go ahead and serve him.
But if the God of Heaven be God,
serve Him!” So there on Mt. Carmel
they gathered. The prophets of Baal
constructed an altar, and they cried
all day long for their god to answer
by fire. However, they were praying to
the wrong god and they received no
answers. Baal proved what he was, and
that was nothing.
Then Elijah repaired the altar of
the Lord. He put the offering there,
poured twelve barrels of water over
it, and then prayed a simple prayer
that God would prove Himself to be
the God of Heaven. That one prayer
brought down the fire of God. It licked
up the sacrifice and even the dust and
the water that had been poured over it!
It was clear that Elijah’s God was the
true God indeed.
Then Elijah went up on the moun-
tain to pray, for he had the promise
of rain but did not have the answer
yet. He sent his servant to go look
out over the Mediterranean Sea for
some sign. The servant came back and
said, “There is nothing.” Elijah prayed
again, and sent his servant out again.
And again—seven times.
Elijah kept praying until the servant
came back that seventh time and said,
“I see a cloud like a man’s hand.” That
was it! Elijah knew God had answered.
He told Ahab to get in his chariot and
head down the mountain, because the
rain was coming. In a few moments
the heavens grew dark with clouds
and the rain began to descend—all
because Elijah had prayed, and then
prayed again.
Pete’s prayers answered
Pete DeBusk followed that same
pattern.
I lived in Dallas for seventeen years,
from just shortly after I was saved in
1974 through 1992. A lot of things
change in seventeen years. We went
through five presidents during that
time: Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, and
the elder Bush. The USSR went from
being a super-power to collapsing. The
Dow Jones Industrial average went
from just under 600 to nearly 3500.
Society changed during the 1970s, the
1980s, and the 1990s as well. But two
things did not change. God did not
change; He still answered prayer. And
Pete DeBusk went on praying.
While I lived in Dallas, I saw some of
those prayers answered. I was there the
night Pete’s son, Tim, prayed through
to salvation. In the summer of 1977,
Tim sat through a meeting under Holy
Ghost conviction. At the conclusion of
the meeting, he came forward to one
of the side altars. He wept and prayed
the sinner’s prayer. God answered his
prayer, and Tim was saved that night.
Pete had seen the answer to his
prayer on a Sunday. What a great vic-
tory! And where do you think Pete
was the next day at noon? If you had
walked up to the back door of the
Dallas church, you would have seen
his boots there. He was praying again.
I was there a few years later when
Pete’s daughter, Sharon, prayed. She
handed her baby to her mother and
came down the aisle of the church to
the front. There she knelt and prayed,
and God answered her prayer. She
was saved that day. And where do you
suppose Pete was found on Monday?
There were his boots again, outside
the church door. Pete was still praying.
These events happened over a period
of years, so it might have been a dif-
ferent pair of boots by then, but they
were outside the church and Pete was
inside praying.
I was there in 1992, at the last meet-
ing in Dallas before camp meeting.

had the privilege of being there as she
prayed through and touched Heaven,
and God saved her soul.
By now you know where Pete was on
Monday—back at the church, on his
knees before God. He had learned that
we pray, and we pray again, because
God answers our prayers.
Today, you may have a burden on
your heart that you have prayed about
in times past. Do not be discouraged!
Pray again, because God hears. That
awareness, that consciousness of Him,
is a gift from Heaven. If you follow
that through and really pray and pray
again, God will answer your prayer.
God will save those who come to Him
with a repentant heart. God will sanc-
tify those who have been converted. He
will baptize with the Holy Ghost and
fire those who have been saved and
sanctified. God still heals sick bodies.
God encourages the discouraged. He
gives hope to the lonely.
Prayer avails!
God does answer prayer! We are told
by James that “the effectual fervent
prayer of a righteous man availeth
much” (James 5:16). Do not quit after
you have prayed once. Pray again!

her a promise that
carried her through
the most difficult time
of her life.

od had His hand over my life from the time I was just a child. Around
the turn of the century, a woman from the West Coast set up an organ
in downtown Murphysboro, Illinois, and told the Gospel story to those
who would stop to listen. My grandmother, along with her sisters and brothers,
became interested, and soon cottage meetings were started in that town. At one
of those humble little gatherings, my grandmother was saved. A few years later,
the church group, which was part of the Apostolic Faith organization, moved to
St. Louis, Missouri. My grandmother did not move because my grandfather was
not saved, but she raised her children to know about God’s plan of salvation.
When I was about four years old, my family moved to Murphysboro. Just a
few months later, my dad was seriously injured when the truck he was driving
was struck by a train. He was in and out of the hospital for over a year, and my
mother had a hard time making ends meet financially. Eventually she asked my
grandmother if we could move in with her. My grandmother’s response was,
“You may, if Ruth will straighten up.” I was a problem child even at that young
age, but I was so thrilled at the thought of living with my grandmother that I
promised I would be good.
About this time, most of my grandmother’s family that had moved to
St. Louis began coming back to live in Murphysboro, and they began having cot-
tage meetings at each other’s homes. Sometimes they listened to sermons on a
wire recorder that was sent from the church headquarters in Portland, Oregon.
I really enjoyed attending those little meetings.
It was while we were living with my grandmother that I really learned about
God and prayer. She would sit down in her rocking chair and put me on a little
stool beside her, and we would have talks. We also prayed together before bed-
time. These are precious memories, and a seed was planted in my heart during

Jesus’ miracle teaches us some
valuable lessons.

A
couple of months ago, our
youngest daughter persuaded
my husband and me to pre-
pare a dinner for about ninety people
to honor a friend who was soon to be
married. In her role as hostess, our
daughter gave much careful thought
to the menu she wished to serve. Once
that was decided, though, she handed
the details of production over to us.
A major part of our pre-event plan-
ning revolved around one question:
how much food should we fix? Once a
final headcount was in, we began figur-
ing the exact quantities to purchase of
each ingredient. We did a “trial run” on
the garlic mashed potatoes, weighing
out ten pounds of Yukon Golds, pre-
paring them as we would on the actual
night, and then counting how many
servings could be measured from the
resulting amount. We plated a sample
dinner and determined that three long
spears of roasted asparagus looked just
right when placed diagonally across
the mound of potatoes. We concluded
that five medallions of roasted pork
loin arranged next to the dollops of
sauce garnishes should be perfect.
Then we were back to computing.
How many slices of pork could you get
out of one five-pound boneless roast?
How many stalks of asparagus were in
one pound? How many rolls would we
need? Would three huge bowls of salad
be sufficient? We wanted to be sure we
had enough of everything!
Recently, I read the account in the
Gospel of Mark about Jesus feed-
ing the multitude. Far away from the
city in a desert place, a crowd of five
thousand men, plus women and chil-
dren, had been listening to Jesus teach.
With evening approaching, the people
needed food.
As I thought about people need-
ing food, my mind went back to our
dinner-planning adventure. Provid-
ing food for a “multitude” (yes, ninety
guests seemed like a multitude to us)
certainly had been an organizational
and culinary challenge for my husband
and me. And we were only five blocks
from the nearest supermarket! No
wonder the disciples were perplexed
as to how to deal with the situation.
I smiled to myself as I reflected on
how easy it was for Jesus to deal with
a meal for five thousand men, plus
women and children. It was no problem

for Him! No headcounts, no figuring,
no measuring. He simply blessed the
food, broke the loaves—and the huge
group was well-fed! By our thinking,
five barley loaves and two small fishes
would not have fed the half-dozen
people seated the closest to Jesus. Yet,
the broken loaves and the divided fish
filled the hungry stomachs of that tre-
mendous crowd.
What was the message for me? The
first, and somewhat obvious, lesson
came with clarity.
However meager our resources may
be, Jesus can make them adequate for
the necessary demands. How often
have we reviewed a situation, seen a
need, or maybe even been asked to
fill one—and felt that what we had
to offer was completely inadequate?
Jesus’ miraculous provision reveals
that we do not have to offer “enough”
or be sufficient in our own strength.
We just need to offer what we have
and lean on Jesus to extend it to meet
the need. He is more than able—and
then all the glory goes to Him! When
we face a problem, the first step should
not be to measure our resources, but
to determine God’s will and trust Him
to meet our needs. He can use and
multiply whatever we offer for what-
ever need exists.
As I continued to ponder the scene
on that Galilean hillside, several other
lessons came to mind.
Man’s extremities are God’s oppor-
tunities. The disciples saw the prob-
lem—and it was a real one, not just
a minor dilemma magnified by their
state of exhaustion. They evaluated the
lateness of the hour and realized the
people must be hungry. Since they were
in a remote place, and there was no
food source available, they approached
Jesus with the suggestion that He dis-
miss the multitude. Jesus, however, saw
the potential for a miracle that would
bring glory to His Father.
Situations that seem impossible
to our human minds are actually
grand opportunities for God to work.
When we face what looks to be an
insurmountable problem, we must
remember that with God, nothing is

impossible! The greatest dilemmas
have the greatest potential for reveal-
ing the power of God.
Sometimes God requires us to par-
ticipate in the answer to our prayers.
I noticed that Jesus asked the disciples
to have a role in meeting the needs of
the people. He gave them instructions,
and they did what they could by orga-

nizing the people into groups, offering
what they did have, and distributing
what God provided. It was no small
task for the disciples to organize and
take food to that many people, but
they did what they were told to do.
Then, as they offered the crowd the
broken loaves and divided fishes, they
were drawn into the miracle.
Today, too, I believe that many times
God expects us to participate in His
workings. Perhaps we are burdened for
the salvation of an acquaintance or a
loved one. God may ask us to speak to
that one about his soul’s need, to invite
him to a church service, or to spend
extra time in prayer for him. Let’s do
our part, and then watch to see how
God will work!
Even when the prayer is about our
own personal needs, it may be that
some participation on our part is
required. Often when Jesus worked a
miracle here on this earth, the recipient
also had a role. For instance, the blind
man washed in the pool of Siloam, the
lame man took up his bed and walked,
and the ten lepers showed themselves
to the priest. Let’s never hesitate to
follow God’s directions; obedience is
the pathway to blessing!
Whatever we give to God, He can
bless and multiply. The little lad did
not make the loaves and fishes, he
simply offered them to Jesus. We are
not the producers of the solutions,
although we may be asked to be the
“distributors.” We may be tempted at
times to devise our own solution to
the problem facing us, or at least offer
God some advice as to how we think
He should handle it! Let’s remember
that coming up with the solution is
not our role; that is God’s business. He
knows just how to accomplish it in the
right way and at the right time. And
very possibly, it will be in a way we
never could have anticipated.
When God gives, He gives gener-
ously. No one went away hungry from
the meal that Jesus provided. We read
that the “fragments that remained”
were more than what had been offered
in the first place—the disciples took up
twelve baskets full! What a testimony
to divine generosity. “Abundantly”
is a word that perfectly describes the
nature of God’s giving.
In thinking over the spiritual les-
sons wrapped into these few short
verses, I wonder what would have
happened if the little boy had tucked
his five loaves and two fishes under his
cloak and failed to offer them to Jesus.
Perhaps this account would never
have been written, although Jesus
no doubt would have found another
way to meet the needs of the people.
Meeting human needs was always
important to Jesus, but that was not
the only reason He performed mir-
acles. He wanted each miracle to be
a revelation of Himself, a sermon in
action.
I believe that Jesus looked beyond
the crowds on the hillside that day,
across the years, to our day and the les-
sons we could derive from what trans-
pired there. Let’s ponder, and learn!

From Camp Meeting 2008
Safe in
the Storm
When I was a young teenager, my dad built a boat, and
one summer we planned to take our vacation in it. We
headed out on a gorgeous Friday evening—blue sky and
white fluffy clouds. We lived on an inlet, and it was about
twelve miles to the open ocean. When night came, I went to
bed, but about midnight, I was jolted awake. All of a sudden
I would be airborne, and then boom, I would be back on
the bunk. I wondered what was going on.
The boat was pitching every which way, but I crawled up
the ladder and to the wheelhouse. There was my dad—his
arms between the spokes of the pilot wheel, then wrapped
and clenched around it. His legs were braced around the
steering column. I had never seen the look that was on his
face. I asked, “What’s going on?” He did not let go, but said,
“We are just in a storm. Go back to bed; we’ll be okay.” I fol-
lowed his instructions and enjoyed bumping through the
night until we were safely into the harbor.
About the time we reached the open ocean, a storm had
suddenly blown in. Later I learned that some of the waves
were approximately two stories high. Dad said when we
would crest a wave, he would just look down. So why was
I able to relax and not worry? I had confidence in my dad
and his ability to get us through that storm.
All people have storms in life, but Christians rest in the
knowledge that our Heavenly Father is in control and is
with us. The Apostle Paul said, “We are troubled on every
side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;
persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed”
(2 Corinthians 4:8-9). Paul faced trouble in nearly every
way imaginable. Why could he say he was not distressed?
He knew that in every situation he could go to the Lord.
Many people are walking around absolutely hopeless. You
can see it in their eyes. They have encountered situations
that have left them wondering where to turn and what to do.
Sometimes they turn to drugs, alcohol, or suicide. However,
when we serve God, we may be cast down, but we will not
be destroyed. We know that God Almighty has the ultimate
control, and He has promised to never leave or forsake us. His
strength is made perfect in our weakness. He will prove Him-
self strong on our behalf, for He wants every one of us to be
successful in serving Him.—Pierre Hancock
Just
Ask!
It is amazing how a simple instruction, if obeyed, can
have a profound and significant effect upon our lives. Jesus
said, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find;
knock, and it shall be opened unto you: for everyone that
asked receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him
that knocketh it shall be opened” (Matthew 7:7-8). Asking,
however, is not just wishing.
The Friday before camp meeting, the pastors and their
spouses were invited to a delicious meal. It was a buffet,
and when we finished, one of the ladies said we could go
back for more. Yet, I looked around and no one was going
for the second round. I told the people at my table, “I would
love to go for more.” I wished to, but I was still sitting down
because no one else was going. After a while, the server
came and took my plate. Then I noticed two other brothers
were going for more, but by then my plate was gone. Some-
one at my table offered to ask for another plate for me, but
I replied, “No, no, I don’t want that.” So I did not have the
second round. Why? Because I failed to avail myself of the
opportunity. Even when help was offered, I made excuses.
The instruction was simple, but I did not follow it.
Perhaps sometimes we are that way with the Lord. We
may wish for salvation, but we need to take it a step further.
We need to ask for forgiveness. We may wish to be sancti-
fied, yet we need to ask. God wants us to be holy, and He
will answer when we yield our all to Him. We may wish for
the baptism of the Holy Ghost, but we need to do more
than wish; we need to seek that experience.
God has many good things to give. He is waiting for you
to ask and then yield yourself to Him. Why not try follow-
ing this simple instruction and see what the Lord will do

Are You
Lost?
When I was younger, I loved to hunt. We were
encouraged to take a partner with us, but for some reason
I loved to go out in the bush by myself. Sometimes I would
see a moose and have my rifle on it, but then I would wait
because I loved the hunt so much that I wanted to be able
to come out again.
One year it came to the last day of the hunting season.
Early in the morning I got up to go, again by myself. Knee-
deep snow had fallen the night before, so I decided to go
only a mile or so, and return to my vehicle if I saw nothing.
Because I did not expect to be gone for long, I did not take
any food with me.
With no sign of a moose, I eventually turned back toward
my vehicle. Then I saw that a moose had crossed my path-
way. I said, “This is the day!” It was not easy walking in
the snow, so I stepped in the footprints of that moose. He
crossed marshes and went near a forest. The tracks were
fresh, so I knew that I was close. Although I had started
early in the morning, I was so taken up with the hunt that
at the noon hour, I was not hungry. Mid-afternoon came,
and still there was no moose.
Suddenly I became aware that time had gone faster than
I expected. Darkness was beginning to settle in, and I knew
that I needed to retrace my steps. Then the realization
came—I do not know how to get out of here. The moment
that I recognized I was lost, I sat down and thought, I am
all alone. Immediately, the Lord whispered to me, “You are
not alone.” Even though I had been foolish in my actions,
God was with me.
My wife and our little children were at home, and I knew
they were going to be concerned. I went quickly in one
direction, and then hurried in another direction. Soon I
was so tired that I sat down beside a tree. One of my feet
was very cold, so I took off my boots and socks and mas-
saged my feet with my hands. Tiredness began to overtake
me, so I just put my head back against the tree. But then I
thought, I cannot go to sleep because there are those who
are expecting me home.
Meanwhile, word had gotten around our community
that I had not come home. A search party was looking for

me, and late in the night I met up with them. My dad was in
the group. He looked at me and said, “Kirk, if you had been
out all night, I would have been out all night too, searching
for you.” That is the love of a father.
God has that kind of love for us. He knows that without
Him, we are lost. Jesus said, “What man of you, having an
hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the
ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is
lost, until he find it?” (Luke 15:4). God wants to find every
lost soul, because He wants all to receive the salvation He
offers.
Are you lost today? God is calling your name. Just cry out

Watch for
Foxes!
When I was growing up in Romania, we had grape
vines. In the spring we would fertilize, clean, and take care
of them. The leaves would come, and pretty soon a little bit
of a flower would appear. My dad would not let us run and
play among the vines then. The budding was a tender time
for the vines and the flowers, and they had to be handled
delicately. If in our play we bumped them, the leaves and
flowers would fall off, and there would not be grapes to
enjoy later on.
Our spiritual lives are like vines, and we need to be care-
ful that damage is not done. Solomon said, “Take us the
foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have
tender grapes” (Song of Solomon 2:15). The enemy of our
souls would like to send hindrances, like little foxes, that
will destroy our spiritual fruit, but we need to be careful
with the “tender grapes” of our lives.
One of these hindrances is the “fox” of pleasure seeking.
Many people live in the moment and consider their own
enjoyment to be more important than anything else. Many
say, “Enjoy yourself! Don’t worry about the consequences.”
That attitude is a fox that will eat away at tender grapes.
Another fox is “some day, when. . . ” or the fox of pro-
crastination. God needs you today; there is no promise of
tomorrow. Yet it is easy to think, Someday when I finish
college, then I will serve God better. Or, Someday when my
friends are praying earnestly, then it will be easier for me to
pray. Or, Someday when I have a better environment, then I
can give my heart to God. Do not let this fox of procrastina-
tion rob you of today’s blessings that God has for you.
Excuses are another fox. We may wish we had a better
talent. We might think we don’t have time, or that our
resources are insufficient in some way. Yet excuses rob us. If
we have an excuse every time an opportunity is in front of
us, our lives will be unfruitful and unfulfilling.
When the Master comes to check the productivity of
our vines, we want Him to find fruit. Let us determine to
watch for the foxes and to protect the tender grapes in our

Quench
Your Thirst
Have you ever been really thirsty? One time we were on
vacation, and a friend and I were playing golf when it was
115 degrees outside. The owners of the golf course were
prepared; they had water jugs at every hole. It seemed that
we emptied those jugs every time we came to one, and still
we were always thirsty by the next hole. That is the condi-
tion that God wants His people to be in spiritually. He says,
“Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters”
(Isaiah 55:1).
When Jesus was on earth, He met a woman of Samaria
who was thirsty. She was at Jacob’s well, and Jesus asked
her for a drink. This surprised the woman because the Jews
did not have many dealings with the Samaritans. However,
the Lord saw this woman’s heart, and knew she had a real
need in her life. Jesus told her that the people who drank
the water from the well would thirst again. Then He said,
“But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him
shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall
be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life”
(John 4:14).
Jesus did something for the Samaritan woman that day.
He put something into her heart, and she spread the news
to the people in the town, inviting them to come and see
the Messiah, who had told her all about her life.
Many people wholeheartedly throw themselves into tem-
poral endeavors that they hope will bring satisfaction, but
the things of this world cannot satisfy the soul. The Living
Water the Lord gives will yield eternal satisfaction, but we
need to have a continual thirst for it.
Are you thirsty? Matthew 5:6 says, “Blessed are they which
do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be
filled.” That is a promise you can stand on.—Pete Sferle
Don’t
Sell It!
It is important to exercise caution in what we buy and
sell. We want to be careful what we sell because once it is
sold, it is gone.
When I was a boy, the five-and-dime store sold toy sol-
diers. Nickels were hard to come by, but once in a while
when I got some, I bought those little soldiers, and eventu-
ally I had a box of them. I played with them, my children
played with them, and so did my grandchildren. One day
I decided to sell those little soldiers. A couple came to our
house and told me they would give me a certain price, and
the amount was way over a nickel, so I sold them. While
they were gone to get their money, another man came. He
was a representative for a company from New York. I told
him the soldiers were sold, but he asked to see them. When
he picked up the first one, he said, “This one is worth $80.” I
had sold all of them for $150! It was a sorry day for me.
There are some things we do not want to sell. We do not
want to sell our reputations. We can work a lifetime on our
reputations and sell them in five minutes. We do not want
to sell our word. When I was a boy, it was said, “Your word
is your bond.” Today, even a contract worth millions of dol-
lars can be broken the next year. But as Christians, we need
to stand behind what we say.
There is also something we want to buy. God’s Word says,
“Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction,
and understanding” (Proverbs 23:23). In our time, truth is
a scarce commodity. However, God is truth, and we need to
believe completely in His Word. We want to love the truth.
There are benefits in buying the truth because the Bible is
“given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine,
for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
that the man of God may be perfect” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
When we apply the Word of God to our lives, we receive
guidance and joy, and we grow as Christians.
Today we can “buy the truth and sell it not.”—Earl

 EVIDENCE
Nine years ago at camp meeting,
God gave me His blessed salvation,
and it was a couple of years after that
when the Lord sanctified me. This day
I know in my soul that there is power
in Jesus, because last night at this altar,
He filled me with His precious Holy
Spirit. The Spirit came down, and I
was speaking in another language that
I did not know. Then a dear sister came
over to me and said, “You are speak-
ing my language. I know what you are
saying!” It was one of the languages of
the Nigerian people, and both of us
were so blessed.
There is power in the Blood of Jesus,
and He can do anything. I am thankful
to serve Him today.—Alexis Rudolph
Although I was raised in the
Gospel, for a long time I wanted to
do my own thing. After high school, I
joined the military, and we did seven
months in Iraq. One day while out on
patrol, my vehicle ran over an IED.
It actually went off right underneath
my wheel, but God protected me and
brought me back.
One night God cornered me up, and
I gave my life to Him. I am so thankful
I did, because it has been so good ever
since. On Monday in the early hours,
He gave me the experience of sanctifi-
cation. I am so glad to be serving God
today, and I just want to go all the way

God has given me many blessings,
and I want to thank Him. Just a year
ago, my husband and I and two other
people were in a horrible car accident.
When I was recuperating, it was found
that my neck was broken and my body
was twisted out of shape. I thank the
Lord that He has brought me through
all of that, and I am here at this camp
meeting. Last year I was only able to

attend one meeting. I appreciate all
the prayers of God’s people for my
husband and me as we went through
that ordeal. There is a real praise to
God in my heart.—Pat Wolfe
God called me when I was sev-
enteen years old. I was always fight-
ing and quarreling, and had much
evil in my heart. It does not seem that
a young boy of this nature would be
in the Gospel, but the Lord brought
me in because I had an intense desire
to serve Him. When I listened to this
sound, undiluted Gospel, the Lord laid
His hand on me. He let me know that I
must destroy the evil things in my life.
I confessed my sins, and God saved my
soul. He later sanctified and baptized
me with the Holy Spirit.
The Lord has been so good to me.
From age seventeen to sixty-five now, I
have no regrets. He gave me a wonder-
ful wife. I am not trying to exaggerate,
but she is a wife I can depend on, a wife
that is part and parcel of me. The Lord
gave us children that have not given
us one minute of headache. They are
all saved, sanctified, and baptized, and
several of them are musicians in the
Gospel. I thank God and will continue
to serve this Lord until I see Him in

A number of years ago, the Lord
saved me from a terrible world. Since
then, He sanctified me.
Last summer after camp meeting
on a Saturday night, I was lying in bed
and praying that God would fill me
with the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
Of course the devil was there and said,
“You have been praying for years for
that, and it is Saturday night. Do you
expect to get your baptism on Saturday
night lying in bed?” But I kept pray-
ing, and the Lord gave me a spirit of
worship. It felt really good and won-
derful, and I asked again if the Lord
would baptize me. Like a bolt of light-
ening out of the heavens He came
down and filled my heart. I began
praising God in a different language.
About two or three blocks away in a
city park they were having a big event
that night; I think it was a wine tasting
festival. It began to get a little bit noisy,
and I could hear them hooting and
hollering. They had the spirit of the
world, but in my bedroom that night I
had the Spirit of the Lord. It felt won-
derful. God still answers prayer and
baptizes older people. I thank Him for

The Lord healed me last year at
camp meeting. It was seven years ago
that I had my first kidney stone, and it
landed me in the ER. From then on, my
condition got worse and worse. For the
last three years, it seemed every other
week I was sick in bed, and the next
week I was trying to get healed up for
the next stone. I missed more church
services than I was able to attend.
Last camp meeting, my wife and I
came determined in our hearts that we
were going to seek the healing the Lord
had promised. After the first meeting,
I told my wife, “I have an assurance in
my heart that this is going to happen.”
We had a week of camp meeting, and
on that Saturday night after a youth
event, a few people gathered to pray.
One of the ladies from Los Angeles
received a reanointing, and she started
to sing in another language. Although I
could not understand the words, I rec-
ognized the tunes. She sang, “Oh, the
Blood of Jesus” and “She only touched
the hem of His garment.” One after
another she sang songs the Lord had
laid on my heart. It was as if the Lord
was saying to me, “This is your time.”
I said, “Lord, if this is what You have,
then this is what I want.” He reminded

me of the man with the demoniac son
where Jesus said, “If thou canst believe,
all things are possible to him that
believeth.” That became the prayer of
my heart, “Lord, I believe. Help thou
my unbelief.”
God touched me, and I knew it. I
went back to our cabin on the camp-
ground and said, “It’s done. I won’t
have another one.” It has been a year,
and I am thankful to say that God has
proven Himself faithful. I love and

This is the first time my husband
and I have been to camp meeting here
in Portland, and I am so thankful that
God provided a way for us to come.
There is power in prayer, and power
in Jesus’ Name. When I was a little girl,
I was diagnosed as having polio. My
parents had faith in God at that time,
and they believed that I was going to
be healed. Although I do not remem-
ber anything about it, God was faith-
ful and healed me. One day when they
came home from church, I ran out to
meet them. God is real!
The Lord spoke to my heart when I
was nine years old, and when I prayed,
He saved me. Down through the years
He has answered so many prayers. He
sanctified me, and He baptized me.
Just last year, my dad had a bad acci-
dent, and then he had a massive stroke.
God has brought him a long way, and
today the medical people call him “the
miracle man.”
Jesus will soon be back as our
coming King. I love Him with all my

Thank God for everything He has
done in my life! He saved, sanctified,
and baptized me with the Holy Spirit
when I was young. I am thankful for
people who are faithful to invite others
to church. Brother and Sister Gumbo
invited my family in Zimbabwe, and
both my sister and I were saved.
Recently, God helped me obtain a
job. Since I have international rather
than United States qualifications, I
had been struggling. Finally I decided
to “leave it at the altar.” By that I mean
not to pray about it and then leave the
church planning what I was going to
do. Rather, I would hand the matter
over to the Lord and trust Him to take
care of it for me. After that I applied
for any type of job I could, even if it
was not really what I had wanted. One
night a lawyer called and said, “I am
sorry I do not have what you applied
for, but I have this.” What he offered
was exactly what I had wanted.
God is with me at work. At times
we have meetings, and some of the
employees are scared or discouraged
because they think they might get fired.
Each time, I pray for God’s favor upon
my life, and my boss has been giving
me positive words of encouragement.

followed me all the days of my life. It
WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?
Acknowledge  “For all have
sinned, and come short of the
glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
“God be merciful to me a sinner”
(Luke 18:13).
Confess  “If we confess our sins,
he is faithful and just to forgive us
our sins, and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
Repent  “I tell you, Nay: but,
except ye repent, ye shall all like-
wise perish” (Luke 13:3). “Repent
ye therefore, and be converted,
that your sins may be blotted out”
(Acts 3:19).
was in the month of July back in 1958
when Jesus found me. The call of the
Spirit came after my young heart. I
could not have identified Him as the
Holy Spirit, but He told me to pray a
prayer, and I prayed out of the deep
of my heart. Jesus saved my soul and
made a change in my life. Later, He
sanctified my heart and filled me with
the Holy Ghost and fire.
Many chapters in the book of my life
have been written since that time. How-
ever, the end of every chapter spells
victory. That is because of Jesus, not
because of me. I stand in awe of God.
I wish I could tell how real He is—no
one should be without Him. I am glad
that I experienced Him for myself.
In the past year, my husband and I
have gone through some of the most
challenging times in all of our lives,
because for many, many months he
was seriously ill. There were days that
it did not look as if he would make it,
and over and over I called the saints
of God for prayer. I have always loved

n ambassador can be defined as
one who represents his coun-
try and its interests in a foreign
land. In December 1998, my wife, her

their opinions of Americans on us! We
represented our country.
In 2 Corinthians 5:20, the Apostle
Paul wrote, “Now then we are ambas-
sadors for Christ, as though God
did beseech you by us: we pray you
in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to
God.” Paul was keenly aware of the
imagery he was using as he employed
this description. He was a Roman citi-
zen, and he knew that peaceful areas
of the Roman Empire were ruled by
the Senate. However, in troubled or
hostile regions, ambassadors were
sent to govern the area and maintain
Rome’s interests. Paul was saying that
Christians are ambassadors for Christ,
called to work in a troubled and hos-
tile world.
At times while in Romania, I have
had occasion to go to the United States
Embassy in Bucharest. It is a very
secure place, and often there is a long
line of people waiting to go in for visa
applications or other business. Since I
am a United States citizen, when I have
shown my passport, I have been given
immediate access into the embassy.
Even in a foreign land, it is possible to
enjoy a small measure of your coun-
try’s benefits in that embassy.
As Christians, church services and
camp meetings can be similar to visit-
ing an embassy. In a small way, we can
experience some of the blessings that
we look forward to some day when we
go to Heaven. However, a visitor does
not stay indefinitely in the embassy.
Similarly, we leave church services to
report to our posts of duty and rep-
resent Jesus Christ to a lost and dying
world.
Qualifications
In order to be an ambassador for
a country, a person first must have
citizenship in that country. When my
wife applied for United States citizen-
ship, one of the requirements was to
pass a test. Some samples of the ques-
tions were:
In what year was the Constitution
written?
The first pilgrims sailed to America
in what ship?
What special group advises the
President?
Who wrote the “Star Spangled
Banner”?
Who said, “Give me liberty or give
me death”?
It was necessary to get eight of the
ten test questions correct. When my
wife fulfilled all the requirements, she
was given a certificate of citizenship.
Happily, in order for us to become
citizens of Heaven, we do not need a
comprehensive initial understanding
of the Bible. Jesus told Nicodemus,
“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a
man be born again, he cannot see the
kingdom of God” (John 3:3). Salvation
is the qualifying event. That experi-
ence makes us new creatures in Christ
Jesus, and our citizenship is recorded
in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
The Apostle Paul was a Roman citi-
zen, a Jew, and a Christian. In Paul’s
day, there was great value in being a
Roman citizen. A chief captain named
Claudius Lysias once told Paul, “With
a great sum obtained I this freedom”
(Acts 22:28). Because Paul was born
a free Roman citizen, the law forbade

that he be bound or beaten while
uncondemned, and gave him the right
to a trial with direct appeal to Caesar.
As a Jew, Paul said he was “circum-
cised the eighth day, of the stock of
Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an
Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touch-
ing the law, a Pharisee; concerning
zeal, persecuting the church, touch-
ing the righteousness which is in the
law, blameless” (Philippians 3:5-6).
He had quite a resumé, yet he went
on to say, “But what things were gain
to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
Yea doubtless, and I count all things
but loss for the excellency of the
knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord”
(Philippians 3:7-8).
Declaring Allegiance
In order to become a citizen of a new
country, you must take an oath. This
was Paul’s oath of allegiance to Jesus
Christ. Paul knew that Jesus had paid
the full price for all of us to have citi-
zenship in Heaven, and consequently
he had no conflict regarding his citi-
zenship. He was willing to put aside all
his past to serve Christ. If we are to be
ambassadors for Christ, heavenly citi-
zenship must be the most important
matter in our lives.
Additionally, there are a few things
an ambassador does not do. An
ambassador does not appoint himself.
As Christians, we are appointed by the
Lord. He said, “Ye have not chosen me,
but I have chosen you, and ordained
you, that ye should go and bring forth
fruit” (John 15:16). An ambassador
does not belong to the country to
which he is sent. As new creatures in
Christ, we are resident aliens in this
world, sometimes called “strangers”
and “pilgrims.” And an ambassador
does not set his affections and inter-
ests in the country where he is called
to serve. As God’s children we love
the souls of the people in this world,
but we are instructed to “love not the
world, neither the things that are in
the world” (1 John 2:15). We cannot
have our affections and hopes set
upon this world and try to be citizens
of Heaven.
The Commission
When an ambassador is sent into
a foreign country, he is given a com-
mission. He is to forward the interests
of his government in that location.
During World War II, Sir Samuel Horr
was the British ambassador to Spain.
His mission was to do his best to pre-
vent Spain, which was sympathetic to
the factious regimes, from entering
the war. He was successful because his
focus remained on seeing the interests
of his own country at work there. He
loved the people of Spain and worked
with them, but his allegiance was to
his home country and his mission.
We also have a commission. “All
things are of God, who hath recon-
ciled us to himself by Jesus Christ,
and hath given to us the ministry of
reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18).
Man sinned in the Garden, and that
sin put a debt on everyone’s account.
We are born with a negative balance,
and from there we continue to accu-
mulate more debt. Christ’s sacrifice on
Calvary is the only one that could pay
the price for the sins of mankind. In
order to reconcile our debt, we must
have the Blood of Jesus applied to

our lives and be born again. This is
the ministry of reconciliation that we
need to receive ourselves and then let
others know about.
The Apostolic Faith Church has
printed Gospel literature for over one
hundred years. Through that effort
to tell about reconciliation, my great-
grandmother received a paper from
this church in her mailbox. She read
the testimonies and sermons and rec-
ognized the power in them. She read
that if she would pray, God would for-
give her. She did that, and was saved.
She continued to pray and was sanc-
tified. She kept praying and received
the baptism of the Holy Ghost. All this
happened in the same evening! In the
years since then, many souls have been
saved as a result of that paper and her
decision to pray. Thank God for the
ministry of reconciliation!
Ambassadors Today
How are we to be ambassadors
today? At a formal event, when an
ambassador enters a room, everyone
stands at attention to honor the posi-
tion he holds. As ambassadors for
Christ, we need to conduct our lives
in a manner that brings honor to the
One we represent. Holiness is what
brings dignity to Christianity because
it reflects Christ.
When I was in high school in Bose-
man, Montana, there was a student
in my drafting class that I knew was a
Christian because I watched his actions
and reactions. When some of the other
students in the class pulled pranks on
him, he just smiled. He was never riled
up. He was an ambassador for Christ.
He handled himself in a manner that
brought honor and dignity to the
Gospel. There is an old saying, “Preach
Christ. If necessary, use words.” This
young man’s life demonstrated the
ministry of reconciliation.
In the 1940s my wife’s grandparents
moved from central to western Roma-
nia, and her Grandfather Jeremiah
began to build a new house. Soon a
young man named Galia came by, asked
if he could help with the construction,
and then faithfully showed up to lend
a hand. As he worked, he sang Chris-
tian songs. That piqued Jeremiah’s
interest, and in time Brother Galia had

the opportunity to share his testimony
and the Word of God. Through that,
Jeremiah and his wife were saved. As
different families moved to the area,
Brother Galia came by with his offer
to help, even as he continued his own
employment. What an ambassador for
Christ! Eventually, there was a church
of seventy people in that town.
In recent months, a boy about twelve
years old came to our church. He met
Brother Roy Frymire, a minister in
his nineties. Brother Roy prayed with
this boy, gave him a few rides home,
bought him a meal, and befriended
him. Brother Roy was being an ambas-
sador for Christ.
Last year in Romania, five young
ladies asked our church leader if they
could do a Sunday school outreach in
a nearby town. They put together a
program and began to go to the town
every Wednesday, inviting children
from the school. Soon they overflowed
our small church in that area, and
then obtained permission to use the
cultural center in the town. Over two
hundred children were coming to that
Sunday school outreach.
However, the Orthodox priest
found out what was going on and
put pressure on the mayor to disal-
low the usage of the cultural center
for religious purposes. The young
ladies relocated back at the church
and continued to fill it up. Our people
removed doors to make more room
for children. Although many of those
children come from Orthodox fami-
lies, they can tell you that a person
must be born again to make Heaven.
Why? Because these young girls have
taken up the ministry of reconciliation
and are ambassadors for Christ.
One of two events can cause an
ambassador to return home—when
he fulfills his term, or when hostilities
break out or are imminent. The Apos-
tle Paul fulfilled his term and wrote
to Timothy, “I have fought a good
fight, I have finished my course, I have
kept the faith: henceforth there is laid
up for me a crown of righteousness,
which the Lord, the righteous judge,
shall give me at that day: and not to
me only, but unto all them also that
love his appearing” (2 Timothy 4:7-8).
Each of us can also fulfill our terms
as Christ’s ambassadors. However, we
believe the Lord is coming soon. Hos-
tilities are imminent. The Lord could
sound the trumpet at any time, and
that will be our call to return home.
Our commission as ambassadors for
Christ will be fulfilled. Are we ready
for that call?
Until our summons comes, each of
us can be ambassadors for God. He
will qualify and commission us if we
seek Him. May the Lord help us to
pray for an opportunity to forward the
ministry of reconciliation.

W
hen you have been taught
about right and wrong, God
and eternity, you never get
away from it. During my upper teen
years, I knew that I was doing things
I should not have been doing. Some-
times I would look in the mirror, and
God would speak to my heart.
My Christian heritage goes a long
way back. My great-grandparents
were a part of the Apostolic Faith
Church when it was founded, and I
grew up attending church and Sunday
school. Because my dad worked in the
church literature publishing depart-
ment, I was a familiar face around the
headquarters
office. Some-
times I had the
opportunity to
help assemble
literature or do
some other project, and I liked that. But
there was something missing inside.
Several times as a child, God spoke to
my heart, but I did not yield to that
call. I guess I thought there would be
more fun in not serving God.
As I grew older, I gradually drifted
away from the precepts that I had been
taught as a child and was involved in
drugs, alcohol, and other aspects of
a life of sin. My heart became hard-
ened, and in time I did not really
feel condemned for any of the things
that I was doing. It seemed the Lord
had stopped speaking to my soul, or
else I just did not hear Him anymore
because I was not listening. Yet once
in a while, like when I was looking in
the mirror, His conviction would cut
right into my heart.

 On one occasion I had been drink-
ing and taking drugs and then was
out driving with some of my friends.
I had a gun in the car when a police
officer pulled me over, and I knew that
I could be in a great deal of trouble.
Stopped on a dead-end street where
I could see our church’s steeple, that
night I told God if He would help
me out, I would come back and serve
Him. Even though it was a pathetic
prayer, made only because I was in a
tight spot, God heard it and extended
mercy. The police officer let me off
pretty easy. Afterwards the enemy of
my soul told me it was just luck, but
God’s Spirit really put conviction on
my heart.
A few nights later, I went to a service
during our annual camp meeting. I
felt so sick and tired of all those things
that I had been doing. As I started to
speak to the Lord, He made it very
clear that I should turn my heart over
to Him. After the service, I knelt at the
chair where I had been sitting. How-
ever, God let me know that if I really
wanted to get my life straightened
out with Him, I needed to pray at the
prayer bench at the front of the church
where other people were praying. After
I obeyed and went to pray there, in a
couple of minutes God came down
and saved me. He changed my heart
and my life.
Soon after that, my grandfather took
me out to breakfast and told me that
when a person is born again, some-
times it can be difficult. He said that
we have a target on us, and the enemy
of our souls is like a lion, looking for
any area of weakness so he can destroy
us. Then he said a Christian needs to

grow, to keep moving forward, and
to seek the other experiences God has
available. It became clear to me that I
needed to do exactly that, so I began to
seek God, and He was faithful to help
me. He spoke to my soul about some
restitutions that I needed to make.
Some of them were hard, but I always
prayed first, and God helped me.

One Sunday night I was praying
after a service, and I felt that my life
was fully consecrated to God. He came
down and wonderfully, entirely sancti-
fied me. God put a song in my heart
and changed my attitude and the way
that I thought.
During another camp meeting, I was
hungry to receive the baptism of the
Holy Ghost. Many people were receiv-
ing from God, including my fiancé,
and that made me want the experience
even more. Yet, I did not receive the
baptism during that camp meeting or
the youth camp which followed. Before
long, my thoughts were totally focused
on that experience. I went to sleep at
night thinking how much I needed my
baptism, and in the morning, that was
my first thought. It was even hard to
concentrate on my job.
A group of young men spent a week-
end attending our church in Yakima,
Washington. Saturday evening was a
youth song night, but afterward, some
of us got down to pray. God had been
so faithful to call for different conse-
crations, but there was one thing in
particular that I had trouble yielding.
That night I turned it over to God
and said, “I give You everything that
I have.” When the Lord would bring
something to my mind, I would say,
“Lord, that is Yours.” When He would
bring up something else, I would say,
“Lord, that is Yours. Whatever You
want me to do, I will do; wherever You
want me to go, I will go.” That night
God came down and filled me with
the Holy Ghost. I cannot explain the
joy it brought.
God has been with me in life’s situ-
ations. A few years ago, I had pneu-
monia and was in the hospital for five
days. The ministers came to pray for
me, and that day I was well enough
to go home. Three days later, I had to
go and be x-rayed. The doctor came
into the room and said, “Clark, I
cannot explain what has happened,
but the pneumonia in your lungs is
completely gone. It should have been
there for another six weeks.” He was so
baffled that he took me into another
room and showed me the x-rays. I
knew what had happened—God had
healed me.
The Lord has helped in every area
of life. My wife and I have been given
many opportunities to work for Him,
and I owe Him everything.

Backslider Returns After 45 Years
G
od called after my heart more
than sixty-five years ago. As
a young lad, I had a praying
mother and father, and had the privi-
lege of being brought up under the
sound of this Gospel. I attended my
first Apostolic Faith meeting down at

year of college at the time, and one
night when I was in a building all
by myself, the Lord spoke to me and
said, “If I should come tonight, where
would you spend eternity?” I knew

stirred my soul. I wrote home to the
people of God and said, “Pray for
me.” About three days later, God came
down right there in that college, and
saved my soul.
For almost thirty years of my life,
I was in the Apostolic Faith Church.
I had the privilege to teach a Sunday
school class, to be an usher, and to be
a guard on the old campground. But
during the War, I was working for the
telephone company. We started work-
ing long hours: instead of working
eight hours a day and five days a week,
we started working sixteen hours a
day, seven days a week. For nineteen
months, I worked that kind of hours.
I thought I didn’t have time to pray
or read my Bible. And I tell you, I was
downhearted. Then the devil came and
he said, “Your whole trouble is that you
haven’t seen the rest of the world. You
don’t know what it has to offer. You
ought to give it a try.” I drifted away,
and I was gone from these folks not
for two or three days—I was gone for
forty-five years. But God still loved my
soul after all that time. Oh, His grace
and mercy are beyond understand-
ing! How thankful I am that He has a
people on this earth who pray, and that
God hears and answers their prayers!

ing.” I knew what prayer was all about.
I had learned to pray when I was just
a small child. I told the Lord that if He
would just give me one more chance to
go back to the Apostolic Faith Church,
I would serve Him the rest of my days.
I would be what He wanted me to
be. And I meant it with all my heart.
I wasn’t a young man by that time; I
was past seventy-five years old when
I made that statement. But I kept my
promise.
God said to me, “It’s a Tuesday
night. They are having a service. Why
don’t you go?” I went and got dressed.
When my wife saw that I was prepar-
ing to go out, she said, “Where do you
think you are going?” I said, “I am
going to church.” She said, “How are
you going to go to church? You haven’t
walked for a year. You can’t drive the
car. There is nobody here to take you,
so how are you going to get there?”
I said, “The Lord will get me there.” I
took my cane and hobbled out to my
car. I couldn’t even lift my right foot
off the ground, but I got into the car
and started for the church. I came to a
stop sign and had to use my left foot to
brake; I couldn’t use my right foot at
all. I went down to the next stop sign.
There were stop lights the rest of the
way to the church, but when I came
to them, God turned them green. He
saw that I was headed the right way.
He didn’t want me to stop; He didn’t
allow the devil to have a chance to talk
to me.
When I pulled into the parking lot
of the church, I got out of my car and
started walking in. The thought came
to me, Something is wrong! I haven’t
walked for a year, and here I am walk-
ing! God had healed me right on the
spot. I walked in the door and a sister
in the narthex greeted me as I went by.
I told her, “God is expecting me. I told
Him if He would give me a chance to
come to this place one more time, I
would give Him my life, and I would
be the first one to the altar.”
I found a place to sit about two-
thirds of the way back on the aisle. I
heard the message of salvation. I heard
the testimonies. I had the privilege to
sing those old familiar songs. Oh, it
brought back memories to me! And
I thank God, when the altar call was
given, I didn’t take my cane and hobble
down the aisle. I didn’t walk down the
aisle. I ran to the altar! I was afraid
God might come before I got there,
and I wanted to make Heaven my
home. You know, I just poured out my
heart and said, “O God, be merciful to
me a sinner,” and I meant it from the
depth of my soul. God met me more
than halfway. I don’t think I was there
more than thirty seconds when God
came down and rolled the old burden
of sin away. He turned me about face,
put a star back in my sky, and sent me
on my way rejoicing.
Do you think the days of miracles
are past? No, they are not! The night
I left my home, I was a sinner, a back-
slider on my way to a devil’s Hell. But
oh, when I left the church after pray-
ing, I had the peace and joy of Heaven
down in my heart. He changed my life
and made it worth living. Three days
later, he sanctified me, and thirteen
days after that, I received the baptism
of the Holy Spirit. I meant business
with the Lord. I told Him, “If You’ll let
me come back, I will serve You the rest
of my life.”
For a number of years now, I have
been “home.” These have been the
most blessed days of my life. I have
had some wonderful privileges. I
have had the opportunity to attend
the camp meetings here in Portland
once again, and to go to the Midwest
camp meetings. God has allowed me
to work over at the church print shop,
and oh, I thank God for it, because
people need God and they need the
message of salvation. One day I was
working on the folding machine over
there, and I totaled it up and real-
ized I had folded nearly half a million
tracts—testimonies of some of the
old-timers. It is a wonderful privilege
to have a part in that!
From the time God restored his sal-
vation until the day he stepped into
Heaven, Ray Roll continued to rejoice
in the mercy of God. He loved to give
his testimony in the church services in
the Portland headquarters church, and
cherished every privilege of helping in
the work of the Lord.
