5 YEAR INTEGRATED M.Sc.

PROGRAMME IN
CELL AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

Highlight of the Programme

In recent times the world is witnessing the growth of modern biology and its potential
applications. In this realm of Molecular and Cell Biology, the mysteries of life processes have
been unraveled and all branches of biology have been unified. Achievements in Research and
Teaching at Faculty of Science, M. S. University of Baroda have been recognized by
Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Department of Biotechnology (DBT), and
the faculty has been awarded PURSE and ILSPARE grants. As part of continuing to impart
cutting edge education relevant to current times, a 5 year integrated M. Sc. in Cell and
Molecular Biology program has been introduced from 2012 with a special emphasis on
integrated and interdisciplinary approach.

Basic theme of the 5 Year Integrated M. Sc. (Cell and Molecular Biology) program is-

a. To facilitate interdisciplinary approach and encourage specialization in frontier areas of
Modern Biology.
b. This program will offer challenging and novel opportunity in life sciences to bright
young students and motivate them to pursue research.
c. Program will be conducted in collaboration with the scientists from NCBS-TIFR
Bangalore-Mumbai and IISER-Pune.
d. Meritorious students will get an opportunity to do summer training and dissertation at
these premier institutes. Teaching will also be conducted by visiting faculties from the
above institutes and abroad apart from experienced teachers from the Science Faculty.

Course Structure:

This program will follow Choice Based Credit System. In the beginning, the courses are designed
to cater the differences in the background of students in Mathematics and Biology and in the later

Evaluation Scheme:

A. Theory: There will be mid-semester (MSE) and end-semester examinations (ESE).
1. MSE will have 30% weightage and ESE will have 70% weightage in all semesters.
2. The grades obtained in MSE will be taken into account for deciding the final grade
3. Examination papers will contain 40% objective questions and 60% subjective questions. \.

4. A student can continue to remain as a student only for (n + 3) years, where n interprets
duration of program.

B. Practical and foundation: Totally internal with continuous evaluation.

Grade Point System:

A grade point system compromising of 7 points (4 to 10) will be followed for evaluating a
candidate in every course.

A Regular student will be given grades only after both mid-semester and end-semester exams
are evaluated.

In order to arrive at a grade point following mechanism may be used.

Grade points:

Grade Points Description Percentage of Marks Division/Grade Range

10 Outstanding 90.01%- 100% First I 0 9.01 10.00

9 Excellent 80.01%- 90.00% First I A 8.01 - 9.00

8 Very Good 70.01%- 80.00% First I B 7.01 - 8.00

7 Good 60.01%- 70.00% First I C 6.01 - 7.00

6 Fair 50.01%-60.00% Second I D 5.01 - 6.00

5 Average 40.00%-50.00% Pass I E 4.00 - 5.00

0- 4 Dropped Below 39.99% F Below 3.99

Grade Point Average = l: (Credit X Grade Point)/Total Credits
Award of Class:
Mark-sheets of semester I to V will not indicate A class. It will simply indicate a result
as either Pass or Fail or Dropped.

CGPA Class

CGPA<4 Dropped

4>CGPA 5 Pass Class

5>CGPA 6 2nd Class

6>CGPA 7 1st Class

CGPA>7 Distinction

Where Cumulative Grade point Average (CGPA) is computed as

CGPA= (Semester credits X GPA)/Total Semester credits

Here the sum is taken over from semester I to semester VI for B. Sc. and ten semesters for
integrated M. Sc. In case of students admitted at Semester VII, sum of semester VII to X will be
considered.

Note: The Dean, Faculty of Science is authorized to resolve any issue related to any
