The completed Application Form must be submitted
together with all other relevant supporting documents to
be considered complete. No changes will be allowed to
the application(s) which have been submitted.

Application deadline for August Intake, Session
2014-2015 is 19 February 2014.

Application Fee
Candidates who wish to apply for more than one M.Sc.
programme must submit SEPARATE sets of
application forms, together with the application fee of
S$40 (for manual application) or S$20 (for online
application) for each programme. Each set of
application form should be accompanied by all the
documents outlined under APPLICATION CHECKLIST.

Full-time/Part-time Basis
Candidates who are interested in applying for both full-
time and part-time study of a graduate programme need
only to apply for either the full-time or part-time
study, according to their first choice of preference.
Candidates who are successful upon gaining admission
may subsequently apply to convert their student status
(i.e. from full-time to part-time or vice versa).

Areas of Specialization
Candidates who are interested in applying for more than
an area of specialization within a M.Sc. programme,
need only to apply for that single relevant M.Sc.
programme. Multiple applications for different areas of
specialization within a M.Sc. programme are not
required at this point of application.
Selection of area of specialization will only be done
after admission to the M.Sc. programme.

International Applicants
International applicants who are not residing in
Singapore or not working in Singapore are only eligible
to apply for the full-time Master of Science
programmes. For candidates who are not on any

year in Singapore). As such, applicants are to provide
either:

a bank statement indicating a balance of at
least S$18,000 or its equivalent ; or
a letter of confirmation and financial
statement from a sponsor (e.g. bank statement of
sponsor indicating a balance of at least S$18,000 or
its equivalent).

This amount is based on the minimum period of one
year taken to complete the programme on full-time
basis. In addition, candidates must also ensure that they
have the financial means to see through their
programme of study, in terms of paying for their tuition
and other related fees, for their entire programme of
study.

Referee Reports
Referee reports are not required for M.Sc. applications.

Documentary
Evidence
All required supporting documents should be attached to the completed application form.
Certificates submitted in a language other than English must be accompanied by a translated and
certified copy. All supporting documents (original & photocopies) submitted by candidates will
not be returned. Further documentary evidence may be requested at a later date.

Original official transcript, or its certified true copies, of candidates with qualifications other
than those from NUS would be requested at the point when offer of admission is made. This
should be sent directly from the issuing University to NUS in a SEALED envelope with its flap
bearing the security seal of the university and the signature of the Registrar or representative.
TOEFL and
IELTS Tests

The quantity and quality of academic work at NUS cannot be accomplished without the mastery
of the English language. The point is deliberately emphasized because graduate students at
NUS submit assignments, take written examinations and are expected to participate actively in
classroom discussions. Applicants who graduated from Universities where English is not the
main medium of instruction (e.g. China, Myanmar, Indonesia, etc) are required to demonstrate
their English proficiency by means of TOEFL* / IELTS** test scores.

Applicants who graduated from English-medium Universities may be required to sit for the
TOEFL/IELTS test, at the discretion of the Faculty of Engineering, so as to assess their
suitability for university study.

Applicants are expected to check on the acknowledgement slip sent back to them as to whether
they are required to sit for TOEFL/IELTS test. Those who are expected to do so, please submit
the original/photocopies of their TOEFL/ IELTS scoresheets by the stipulated date.

*TOEFL is the abbreviation for the Test of English as a Foreign Language.
**IELTS is the abbreviation for the International English Language Testing System.

The minimum score expected is:
i. 600 (for TOEFL paper-based test) or
ii. 250 (for TOEFL computer-based test) or
iii. 92 (for TOEFL internet-based test) or

Fees Session 2013/2014

While you are pursuing your studies in NUS, you are liable to pay fees. The amount payable may depend on your
nationality as well as whether you have previously enjoyed a Singapore government subsidy or sponsorship by a
government agency.

In essence, students either pay fees as set out in Tables 1 and 4 or Tables 2 and 4, while the M.Sc.(IP Mgt) students pay
fees set out in Tables 3 and 4 (pages 8 and 9).

Category 1 Non-Subsidised Tuition Fees
Students who have previously enjoyed government subsidy or sponsorship by Ministry of Education (MOE) or any
Singapore government agency (such as scholarships offered by the Ministries, Public Service Commission and Statutory
Boards) in a graduate programme (either Masters or Ph.D. degrees) will not be eligible for subsidy in another graduate
programme at the same or lower level. Instead, such students will be liable to pay Non-Subsidised Tuition Fees.

For example, students who had previously enjoyed subsidy/scholarship in a Masters programme and had attained the
Masters degree will not be eligible for subsidy in another programme at Masters or lower level. The Non-Subsidised
Fees rates determined by MOE in Academic Year 2013/2014 are shown in Table 1 (page 8). The Non-Subsidised Fees
rates payable for subsequent Academic Years are subject to revision. For the latest updates, please visit the website
http://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/edu/gd-fees.html .

Other tests (including the TOEFL Institutional Test) and those that claim to be predictions,
estimations, equivalents, simulations, etc. of the TOEFL or IELTS are unacceptable. The
TOEFL score or IELTS result is only valid for 2 years after the test and should be valid at the
beginning of the application period for the designated M.Sc. degree.

Successful candidates whose TOEFL/IELTS scores fall within the following ranges must register to
take the Diagnostic English Test (DET) conducted by NUS Centre for English Language
Communication (CELC) :
i. 580 TOEFL paper-based test < 600
ii. 237 TOEFL computer-based test < 250
iii. 85 TOEFL internet-based test < 92
iv. IELTS = 6.0 (Academic).

Candidates who do not achieve an expected proficiency level upon taking the DET will be required
to read and obtain a satisfactory grade for the assigned English Course(s) conducted twice weekly.
Classes are available both during the day and in the evening. Subject to availability, part-time
students will be given priority to register for evening classes. Further details will be provided upon
successful admission.

An application fee for applying a programme must accompany each of the completed application
forms. Application fees are non-refundable even for those who underpay. Do ensure that your
application is accompanied by the correct amount of application fee.

Application fee is in Singapore dollars: $40 (or US$37) for an application filed manually or $20 (or
US$18.50) for an application submitted online. Do note that this amount excludes bank charges (for
those paying by postal order or bank draft). Applications with insufficient application fees are
deemed as incomplete and would not be processed as such.

Personal payments by NETS will be accepted at the Student Service Centre (Cashiers Office),
Yusof Ishak House, Level 1, No. 31 Lower Kent Ridge Road, NUS. The Student Service Centre
opens from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm from Monday to Thursday and from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on Friday.
It is closed on Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays.

All payments sent by post must be made by cheque, postal order or bank draft made out to
'National University of Singapore'.
Cheques, postal orders and bank drafts must have the sender's name, address and telephone
number written on the reverse side. Personal cheques, crossed, are accepted only from candidates in
Singapore.

E-payment by credit card is available to candidates whose applications are submitted online.

Documentary

The minimum score expected is:
i. 600 (for TOEFL paper-based test) or
ii. 250 (for TOEFL computer-based test) or
iii. 92 (for TOEFL internet-based test) or
iv. 6.5 score for IELTS (Academic).

financially (i.e. estimated living expenses of S$18,000 a year in Singapore). As such,
applicants are to provide either:

a bank statement indicating a balance of at least S$18,000 or its equivalent ; or
a letter of confirmation and financial statement from a sponsor (e.g. bank statement of
sponsor indicating a balance of at least S$18,000 or its equivalent).

This amount is based on the minimum period of one year taken to complete the programme on
full-time basis. In addition, candidates must also ensure that they have the financial means to
see through their programme of study, in terms of paying for their tuition and other related fees,
for their entire programme of study.

MASTER OF SCIENCE (ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING)

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Electrical Engineering is structured around lectures and end-of-semester examinations.
Candidates may opt for part-time or full-time study.

A candidate needs to complete at least 10 modules and may read for a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering with or without
an area of specialization.

If a student has opted for a specialization and has met the graduation requirements for the MSc., but has not met the
requirements for graduating with the specialization, then by default, the student will graduate with the M.Sc. degree
without specialization indicated.

The specializations available are:

1. Automation and Control Engineering
2. Communications Engineering
3. Computer Engineering
4. Microelectronics

Whether or not a specialization is taken, a candidate may offer projects in lieu of graduate modules. If a candidate opts
for a project, he/she has to propose a suitable project and find an appropriate supervisor. The candidate's experience and
expertise in his/her workplace should help to identify a suitable project.

There are 2 types of projects (only one of these types can be taken):

Type 1: Independent Study Modules, EE5001/ EE5002 (equivalent to one graduate module)
Type 2: EE Project, EE5003 (equivalent to two graduate modules)

For information on staff research areas, please visit the ECE website at: http://www.ece.nus.edu.sg/community/faculty

Some modules have prerequisites. It is the candidate's responsibility to ensure that the prerequisite requirements are met.
Likewise, if a specialization is opted for, the candidate has to ensure that the requirements for this specialization are
satisfied. Please refer to the requirements for each of the specializations given below.

Candidates are asked to note that some modules are offered in Semester I and others in Semester 2. However, due to
various constraints, some modules may not be offered at all in any particular year. Candidates should note this in
planning their study programme.

Candidates should also note that the final composition of graduate modules proposed by them is subject to approval, as it
must always reflect a degree in Electrical Engineering. Candidate may take up to 2 graduate level modules from other
departments, i.e., those without EE codes, subject to approval.

Other elective modules may be chosen from within the Department. Modules taken outside the Department are subject
to the general guidelines and Departments approval.

M.Sc. (ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING) - WITHOUT A SPECIALIZATION

considering a career, in environmental engineering, and wish to be part of the global effort to incorporate environmental
considerations in all human activities. The curriculum is sufficiently flexible to accommodate students from science and
technology backgrounds as well as provide practicing engineers an opportunity to enhance their technical competence.
This programme is also suitable for graduates who wish to build on their prior educational background and professional
experience in the field of environmental science and technology, and to acquire new skills for solving advanced
environmental engineering problems, thus enabling them to contribute in greater measure to Singapores push to develop
its environmental technology industry. The programme will prepare students to contribute to the environmental protection
efforts spearheaded by the countries in the region. In addition, this broad-based educational programme would be of
relevant interest to professionals in the governments regulatory and statutory bodies, as well as in institutes of higher
learning.

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Environmental Engineering is structured around lectures, continual assessments and
end-of-semester examinations. Candidates may opt for part time or full-time study.

Part-time students will normally read 2 graduate modules equivalent to 8 MCs per semester and attend lectures two
evenings per week. Full-time students will normally read 3-4 graduate modules equivalent to 12-16 MCs per semester
and attend lectures three-four evenings per week.

A candidate needs to complete a program of study consisting of 1 core module and at least 9 elective or other approved
modules.

Some modules may have prerequisites. It is the candidates responsibility to ensure that the prerequisites requirements, if
any, are met.

Candidates should also note that the final composition of graduate modules proposed by themselves is subject to approval
by Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Candidates may, as a part of the 10-module requirement for the
MSc and subject to approval by Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, take up to 2 graduate modules not
exceeding 10 MCs that are from other departments/faculties.

IMMIGRATION MATTERS

International students who are successful in gaining admission to their respective full-time M.Sc. programmes must note
that their offer of admission is conditional upon the successful application of their Students Passes.

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has implemented a web-based system for Students Pass application
called the Students Pass Online Application & Registration (SOLAR).

When full-time international students have been offered admission to our programmes, the University will proceed with
the student pass application via SOLAR and also write to inform candidates how to complete the application process
at their end. After candidates complete the application through SOLAR, ICA will process the application.

For candidates from countries which require a visa to enter Singapore (details can be found at
http://www.ica.gov.sg/page.aspx?pageid=96&secid=94), the University will be applying for the visa cum Students Pass
via SOLAR. If the Students Pass application is approved, the In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter, which also serves as a
single-journey entry visa, will be sent to the relevant candidates. This letter and the valid passport must be presented to
the Duty Officer at the immigration checkpoint upon arrival in Singapore.

For candidates from a non-visa required country (e.g. Malaysia, Indonesia etc.), candidates can collect the approval letter
at the point of registration with the University.

On your arrival in Singapore, you will be given a Social Visit Pass for a minimum of 2 weeks at the airport or point of
entry. You may be asked to show your Letter of Admission. After registering as a student and obtaining your student
registration card, you must apply for a Students Pass at least 4 working days before the expiry of your Social Visit Pass
at one of the following centres :

1. Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) booth
National University of Singapore
(Venue to be confirmed)
Available before start of semester (dates to be confirmed).
2. Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA)
ICA Building
4
th
Storey, 10 Kallang Road
Singapore 208718
Tel : 63916100
http://www.ica.gov.sg
Make an e-appointment at the ICA website
(https://eappointment.ica.gov.sg/ibook/index.do)
before going to ICA Building.
Your passport will be returned within 1 week. Bring along
your Letter of In-Principle Approval (with Graduate
Studies Offices endorsement).

Some applications for Students Pass may take a longer duration to process. In some instances, the processing time may
take up to 6 weeks. For such situations, the candidates Social Visit Pass will be extended by ICA accordingly.

Please note that spouses and/or children of international M.Sc. students are not sponsored by the University for their visa
applications. Application of their Social Visit Pass (SVP) has to be made directly at the Visitor Services Centre, 4
th
floor
Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and a bond is required. The amount of the bond is to be established by ICA.
Student must have already obtained a Student Pass issued by the ICA at the time of application. A local sponsor
(Singapore Citizen/Permanent Resident) is required in order to apply for a SVP for spouse and/or children. The SVP
granted will normally be for up to a maximum period of 6 months. It is renewable, subject to ICAs approval.

Details on immigration matters can be found at the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority website at http://www.ica.gov.sg
