BROMPTON

PRODUCT RANGE
Brompton Bicycle Type L: This is the simpler and lighter of the two types. Although it is
without a rear carrier, the optional front carrier system, if fitted, can take care of most day
to day needs in this respect. For riding after dark, battery lights can be fitted, but these will
normally need to be detached if the bicycle is to be folded. The type L is for those who
expect to use the Brompton mainly by day, or for whom weight saving is of particular
importance. The type L is painted red and black.
Brompton Bicycle Type T: This is equipped with a rear carrier and a dynamo lighting
system. These do not affect folding or the folded size, but they add some 10% to the
weight. It is a great convenience to have carrier and lights permanently to hand on the
bicycle, and the type T is recommended for those who regularly need these.
The lights are mounted out of harm's way, with the wiring carefully routed. The carrier itself
is rigid, wide and strong, it comes complete with purpose made elasticated cords for
securing baggage, and it can be used for large loads. The type T is painted gloss black.
Gearing: The ratios provided by the three-speed models, types L3 and T3, are fine for
general use and for around town.
Lower gearing: bicycles may be supplied to special order with reductions of 12% or 18%
on the gear developments given in the specification.

Riding position: As supplied, with standard seat pillar, the Brompton
offers a satisfactory riding position for the majority of users. Some
however, may require a closer reach to the
handle bars, others may wish for a higher
saddle. To meet these various needs,
therefore, a "saddle adapter pin" and
longer seat pillars are available as options.
These can be supplied to order on a new
machine, or they can be fitted later. Small
fore/aft adjustments to the handlebar
position can also be made.

THE FRONT CARRIER SYSTEM
The Brompton system is extremely convenient for taking luggage
on the bike i t only takes a moment to attach or release it.
Moreover, with the load, in effect, secured directly to the main
frame, the steering is hardly affected. The system is a delight to
use. and we strongly recommend it if you regularly need to take
luggage or shopping with you.
The principal elements of the front carrier system are:
1. the front carrier block and clip, which is secured to the bicycle frame; 2.
the front carrier frame, which latches onto the block; 3. the pannier bag or the
basket bag, which fit over the carrier frame.
The pannier bag and the basket bag are normally sold ready for
use (i.e. fitted over the front carrier frame), and as such are respectively called the cloth
pannier and the folding basket: the individual items can, though, be bought separately.
Front carrier block and clip:
A mounting kit is provided, and with this the block is made fast to the bicycle. The block
itself is immensely strong, and it has a sprung clip to ensure that luggage remains in place
when riding. The block does not project from the folded package.
Front carrier frame:
This is a brazed, tubular steel frame, with a plated finish. The top member of the frame acts
as a carrying handle: the base of the frame gives support for the contents of pannier or
basket. This frame may also be used on its own to carry other luggage secured to it.
Cloth pannier:
This is made to our design from tough waterproof nylon fabric.
The main compartment has a divider for keeping papers
separated from other articles. At the back, there are two
pockets for items such as tools, maps etc. Total capacity is 22
litres. All the compartments have zip fasteners.
This is a dual purpose option as, off the bike, the pannier is a
practical holdall in its own right.
Folding basket:
Again to our design, and using the same material as the
pannier, this provides a large, open-top container. ideal for
shopping. Mounted on the bike, the shape is maintained by
virtue of a simple bracing frame: this bracing frame is free to
pivot up to lie flush with the backing frame, so that when the
basket i s not in use, i t assumes a virtually fiat shape for
storage.
Drainage holes are provided in case of rain. When
used as a basket off the bike, it has the character
par t bag/part basket, and occasionally i t i s
necessary t o take care stowing goods t o make
sure it stands up. Capacity is 24 litres
OTHER OPTIONAL ITEMS
FOLDING LEFT HAND PEDAL:
A standard left hand pedal (unless unscrewed from the machine)
projects from the folded package; for many users this may not be a
problem. On the other hand i f you regularly need t o carry your
machine or to stow it in confined spaces, It can be a considerable
nuisance.
The solution i s to fit the ingenious and simple
Brompton folding pedal: this folds away at a touch
and when folded all that projects i s the 20mm
width of the bearing housing.
The combination of a sealed precision bearing, a sound configuration
and the right materials, gives great strength, and the pedal is unaffected
by scuffing against curbs etc., which inevitably occurs on occasion. Both
sides of the pedal are available as tread surfaces and in use it is just
like an ordinary pedal.
SADDLE POSITION:
In the normal configuration, the saddle is 985mm from the ground (750mm from the bottom
bracket):
If you need a higher saddle and you can live with its projecting slightly from the folded
package, you should fit a saddle adapter pin (pointing up) and/or a longer seat pillar (note:
additional height is also possible by fitting other types of saddle, and your dealer would be
able to advise):
1. Saddle adapter pin:
a) mounted "pointing down", it allows the saddle to be moved up to 40mm forward
(which also makes the folded package the most compact)
b) mounted "pointing up", it allows the saddle to be moved up
to 30mm higher.
2. Extended seat pillars: there are two sizes, the SP3P and the
SP6P, which are respectively 30mm and 60mm longer than the
standard seat pillar. Thus with both saddle adapter pin and the
longest seat pillar, you can obtain, with a Brompton saddle, a
height up to 1065mm from the ground.
COVER AND SADDLE BAG:
In many situations, for instance on trains, or when the bike is dirty, a cover is useful. The
Brompton cover is easy to fit or remove, and it can be drawn tight around the base of the
bike by using the pull cord fitted. A flap in the top of the cover allows you to pick up the bike
in the normal way. The saddle bag is provided as a place to keep the cover when it's not in
use.
The Brompton and its various accessories offer countless practical and enjoyable new uses for a bicycle. As a result of ingenious
design, sound engineering and great attention to detail, you can expect a lifetime of dependable service from our products.
