Red Hot Chili Peppers Look Around

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a American funk rock band that
formed in 1983 in Los Angeles The music !ideo " am
deconstructing of theirs is created for a song called #Look Around$
The song is upbeat% groo!& song 'ith a punk attitude and a slightl&
(oke& nature The !ideo 'as directed b& Robert Hales on the )*
th

+anuar& ),1)
Overview of the video
The !ideo consists of each band member in a di-erent room doing
di-erent things This% along 'ith a rapid editing pace and a surreal
mis.en.scene for each room makes a reall& interesting% di-erent and
o!er all odd music !ideo
The setting for each band member 'as e/tremel& surreal and di-erent
to each other This made for a real contrast considering there 'as a
transition bet'een the rooms e!er& * seconds or so This room for the
drummer sums up the genuine randomness of the rooms 0ith a grott&
looking bathroom 'ith pale colours and a punch bag that matches the
drummer$s out1t% it creates an atmosphere of complete chaos This 1ts
in 'ell 'ith the chaotic beat of the song " reall& like this randomness of
the setting "t seems perfect for the culture of this genre of music2
letting go of &ourself% being 'eird and 'onderful and breaking taboos "
reall& feel that it also adds a comedic !alue to the band% and e/empli1es
that the& are not completel& serious and " like this as 'ell " feel that if
'e are to carr& out our plan of creating a music !ideo for funk rock band
that this idea of being random and 'eird is a great inspiration and it 'as
one of the main reasons 'h& " decided to pick this !ideo to deconstruct
Editing
The editing 'ithin this music !ideo 'as% in m& opinion% brilliant The
'a& that the transitions bet'een each room ga!e the illusion that
the& 'ere all attached to each other ga!e it a reall& surreal feel "
also like the 3oom e-ect that occurred 'here the camera 'ould
3oom into di-erent areas of the room at a 4uick pace This allo'ed%
along 'ith the !er& fast editing pace% the chaotic atmosphere to be
e/aggerated " feel that " could incorporate this into our music !ideo
if 'e 'ere to create a chaotic e-ect because it is a simple% &et
e-ecti!e 'a& to do it
The transition to create the
illusion that each room is
attached to each other makes the
!ideo seem to 5o' easil& and
sta& as odd and 'eird as it is
intended to be
The camera shots 'ithin this !ideo 'ere actuall& !er& minimal
"t seems that (ust a lot of long shots 'here taken and then
molded together to create 'ith transition e-ect This 'ould
ha!e been hard to do because the& 'ould ha!e needed to be
the same distance from the sub(ects to make for a realistic
illusion Apart from that there 'ere no other shots A lot of
3ooms 'ere done but 4uite ob!iousl& 'ithin the editing seat
because of the perfect 3oom 6!en a stead& cam on a slider
could not ha!e done it so smoothl& and 4uickl& These ended up
creating a lot of macro shots that didn$t seem to focus on
much This further e/aggerated this chaotic atmosphere
7ne of the most important aspects of this music !ideo
'as the action of the band members This 'as because
the& 'ere so random and destructi!e but funn& and
interesting The surrealism and randomness of the
'omen coming out of a fridge and the dog (ust being
there e/empli1es the culture of funk rock and backs up
the un.serious !ibe and en(o&ment that the band is
ha!ing This created a persona for each member% and
this persona 'as helped b& the mis.en.scene of each
room 8or e/ample 'ith the singer being in a dark red
room connoting passion and !olatilit& 'as dancing around
ridiculousl& being e/tremel& cra3& and energetic%
'hereas the guitarist in the gre& room 'as !er& secluded
and static This e/plains to me that one ke& thing to do
'hen creating a music !ideo is to use mis.en.scene as
the most important tool " ha!e% because 'ithout the
colours and setting 1tting these actions the& 'ould ha!e
been pointless
My inspirations from the video
0hat " reall& like about this !ideo is the 'a& that the& managed to 1t
something so random and surreal to the actual culture of the music " like the
'a& that the band member act and create their o'n persona " feel that "
'ouldn$t tr& to re create the same !ibe and represent the same culture but the
'hole idea of it as a 'hole reall& e/cites me Their cra3iness and the 'a& it$s
not serious is great " also like the transitions to di-erent rooms " feel
inspired to create something like this but use this sort of transition to go into a
di-erent setting The inspiration from this !ideo is so broad% but so crucial
because its made me start to think of 'hat !ideo " 'ant to create
