The Personality of Godhead is perfect and complete, and because He is completely perfect, all
emanations from Him, such as this phenomenal world, are perfectly equipped as complete wholes.
Whatever is produced of the Complete Whole is also complete in itself. Because He is the Complete
Whole, even though so many complete units emanate from Him, He remains the complete balance.

Iso mantra 1

vsyam idam sarva yat kica jagaty jagat
tena tyaktena bhujth m gdha kasya svid dhanam

sarvam all; idam this; yat kica whatever; jagat

within the universe; vsyam [is] controlled; a by the Lord; bhujth you should accept;

Everything animate or inanimate that is within the universe is controlled and owned by the Lord.
One should therefore accept only those things necessary for himself, which are set aside as his
quota, and one should not accept other things, knowing well to whom they belong.

eva tvayi nnyatheto 'sti na karma lipyate nare

One may aspire to live for hundreds of years if he continuously goes on working in that way, for that
sort of work will not bind him to the law of karma. There is no alternative to this way for man.

asury nma te lok andhena tamasvt
ts te pretybhigacchanti ye ke ctma-hano jan

The killer of the soul, whoever he may be, must enter into the planets known as the worlds of the
faithless, full of darkness and ignorance.

Iso mantra 4

anejad eka manaso javyo nainad dev pnuvan prvam arat
tad dhvato 'nyn atyeti tihat tasminn apo mtariv dadhti

ekam [That] one [Personality of Godhead]; anejat [is] fixed; javya [and is]

Although fixed in His abode, the Personality of Godhead is swifter than the mind and can overcome
all others running. The powerful demigods cannot approach Him. Although in one place, He controls
those who supply the air and rain. He surpasses all in excellence.

tad ejati tan naijati tad dre tad v antike
tad antar asya sarvasya tad u sarvasysya bhyata

tat this Supreme Lord; ejati walks; tat He; na not; ejati

[walk]; tat He; dre [is]
far away; tat He; u [is] also; antike very near; tat He; anta [is] within; sarvasya

The Supreme Lord walks and does not walk. He is far away, but He is very near as well. He is within
everything, and yet He is outside of everything.

Iso mantra 6

yas tu sarvi bhtny tmany evnupayati
sarva-bhteu ctmna tato na vijugupsate

tu but; ya he who; anupayati observes in a systematic way; sarvi all; bhtni living
entities; eva only; tmani in relation to the Supreme Lord; ca and; tmnam the
Supersoul; sarva-bhteu in every living being; tata thereafter; na [does] not; vijugupsate

[hate] anyone.

He who sees systematically everything in relation to the Supreme Lord, who sees all living entities as
His parts and parcels, and who sees the Supreme Lord within everything never hates anything or any
being.

Iso mantra 7

yasmin sarvi bhtny tmaivbhd vijnata
tatra ko moha ka oka ekatvam anupayata

One who always sees all living entities as spiritual sparks, in quality one with the Lord, becomes a
true knower of things. What, then, can be illusion or anxiety for him?

Iso mantra 8

sa paryagc chukram akyam avraam asnviram uddham appa-viddham
kavir man paribh svayambhr ythtathyato 'rthn vyadadhc chvatbhya sambhya

paryagt one must know in fact; sa that person; ukram the omnipotent; akyam
unembodied [person]; avraam without reproach; asnviram without veins; uddham
antiseptic; appa-viddham prophylactic; kavi omniscient; man philosopher; paribh
the greatest of all; svayambh [the] self-sufficient [person]; vyadadht [who] awards [the
living entities]; arthn [their] desirables; ythtathyata just in pursuance of [their destinies];
sambhya [from] time; vatbhya immemorial.

Such a person must factually know the greatest of all, the Personality of Godhead, who is
unembodied, omniscient, beyond reproach, without veins, pure and uncontaminated, the self-
sufficient philosopher who has been fulfilling everyone's desire since time immemorial.

Iso mantra 9

andha tama pravianti ye 'vidym upsate
tato bhya iva te tamo ya u vidyym rat

ye those who; upsate worship; avidym nescience; pravianti enter into; andham
gross ignorance; tama darkness; bhya [but] still more;

tata than that; te they
[enter]; tama [into] darkness; ye those who; u [are] also; rat engaged; vidyym in
the culture of knowledge.

Those who engage in the culture of nescient activities shall enter into the darkest region of
ignorance. Worse still are those engaged in the culture of so-called knowledge.

Iso mantra 10

anyad evhur vidyaynyad hur avidyay
iti uruma dhr ye nas tad vicacakire

anyat [one obtains a] different [result]; vidyay by culture of knowledge;

The wise have explained that one result is derived from the culture of knowledge and that a
different result is obtained from the culture of nescience.

Iso mantra 11

vidy cvidy ca yas tad vedobhaya saha
avidyay mtyu trtv vidyaymtam anute

ya a person who; saha simultaneously; veda knows; ubhayam both; vidym
knowledge in fact; ca and; avidym nescience;

death; avidyay by culture of nescience; anute enjoys; vidyay amtam deathlessness;
by culture of knowledge.

Only one who can learn the process of nescience and that of transcendental knowledge side by side
can transcend the influence of repeated birth and death and enjoy the full blessings of immortality.

Iso mantra 12

andha tama pravianti ye 'sambhtim upsate
tato bhya iva te tamo ya u sambhtym rat

ye those who; upsate worship; asambhtim demigods; pravianti enter into; andham
ignorance; tama darkness; bhya [but] still more; tata than that;

te those [persons];
tama [enter into] darkness; ye who; u [are] also; rat engaged; sambhtym in the
[worship of the] Absolute.

Those who are engaged in the worship of demigods enter into the darkest region of ignorance, and
still more so do the worshipers of the impersonal Absolute.

Iso mantra 13

anyad evhu sambhavd anyad hur asambhavt
iti uruma dhr ye nas tad vicacakire

anyat [one obtains a] different [result];

Supreme Lord, the cause of all causes; anyat [one obtains a] different [result]; hu it is said;
asambhavt by worshiping what is not the Supreme; iti thus; uruma I heard it; dhrm
from the undisturbed authorities; ye who; vicacakire perfectly explained; na unto us;
tat about that subject matter.

It is said that one result is obtained by worshiping the supreme cause of all causes and that another
result is obtained by worshiping what is not supreme. All this is heard from the undisturbed
authorities, who clearly explained it.

Iso mantra 14

sambhti ca vina ca yas tad vedobhaya saha
vinena mtyu trtv sambhtymtam anute

ya one who; veda knows; ubhayam both; sambhtim the eternal Personality of
Godhead, His transcendental name, form, pastimes, qualities and paraphernalia, the variegatedness
of His abode, etc; ca and; vinam the temporary material manifestation of demigods, men,
animals, etc, with their false names, fame, etc;

with everything liable to be vanquished; anute enjoys; amtam deathlessness; sambhty in
the eternal kingdom of God.

One should know perfectly the Personality of Godhead r Ka and His transcendental name, form,
qualities and pastimes, as well as the temporary material creation with its temporary demigods, men
and animals. When one knows these, he surpasses death and the ephemeral cosmic manifestation
with it, and in the eternal kingdom of God he enjoys his eternal life of bliss and knowledge.

Iso mantra 15

hiramayena ptrea satyasypihita mukham
tat tva pann apvu satya-dharmya daye

mukham the face; satyasya of the Supreme Truth; apihitam [is] covered; ptrea by a
dazzling covering; hiramayena [of]

golden effulgence; pan O sustainer; tvam [You]
Yourself; apvu kindly remove; tat that covering; daye for exhibiting [Yourself]; satya
[unto Your] pure; dharmya

devotee.

O my Lord, sustainer of all that lives, Your real face is covered by Your dazzling effulgence. Kindly
remove that covering and exhibit Yourself to Your pure devotee.

Iso mantra 16

pann ekare yama srya prjpatya vyha ramn samha
tejo yat te rpa kalya-tama tat te paymi yo 'sv asau purua so 'ham asmi

pan O maintainer; eka-e the primeval philosopher; yama the regulating principle; srya
the destination of the sris (great devotees); prjpatya the well-wisher of the prajpatis
(progenitors of mankind); vyha kindly remove; ramn the rays; samha kindly withdraw;

O my Lord, O primeval philosopher, maintainer of the universe, O regulating principle, destination of
the pure devotees, well-wisher of the progenitors of mankind, please remove the effulgence of Your
transcendental rays so that I can see Your form of bliss. You are the eternal Supreme Personality of
Godhead, like unto the sun, as am I.

Iso mantra 17

vyur anilam amtam atheda bhasmnta arram
o krato smara kta smara krato smara kta smara

atha now; idam [after] this; arram body; bhasmntam

[let the] air of life; amtam [be merged into the] indestructible; anilam total reservoir of air; o
O Lord; krato O enjoyer of all sacrifices; smara please remember; ktam all that has been
done by me; krato O supreme beneficiary; smara please remember; smara please
remember; smara please remember; ktam all that I have done for You.

Let this temporary body be burnt to ashes, and let the air of life be merged with the totality of air.
Now, O my Lord, please remember all my sacrifices, and because You are the ultimate beneficiary,
please remember all that I have done for You.

Iso mantra 18

agne naya supath rye asmn vivni deva vayunni vidvn
yuyodhy asmaj juhuram eno bhyih te nama-ukti vidhema

agne O my Lord, as powerful as fire; naya kindly lead; vivni all; asmn [of] us; supath
by the right path; rye for reaching You; deva O my Lord; vidvn

O my Lord, as powerful as fire, O omnipotent one, now I offer You all obeisances, falling on the
ground at Your feet. O my Lord, please lead me on the right path to reach You, and since You know
all that I have done in the past, please free me from the reactions to my past sins so that there will
be no hindrance to my progress.
