Accessory Drives
Description
This Section describes the accessory gearbox. Mounted on the aft side of the accessory gearbox are the
optional pneumatic or hydraulic starter, optional liquid fuel pump, optional hydraulic pump, and the lube
and scavenge pump. The air/oil separator and the compressor stator control are mounted on the front of
the gearbox. Figure 16-1 is a schematic of the accessory drive system.

Auxiliary Accessory Drive Pad

The physical description of the auxiliary drive pad is shown on Installation Drawing, Interface A17.
This pad is available for Purchaser use on natural gas fueled engines.
The pad drive speed to main shaft speed ratio is 5998/9827, and the available power extraction rating is
85 hp at 5998 rpm. Pad drive direction of rotation is clockwise, viewing the gearbox from the aft side.
Maximum allowable drive torque is 2500 in-lb. Maximum allowable overhung moment on the pad is
800 in-lb, and maximum shear is 80 lb.
The drive shaft and spline connection on this pad are sealed and drained to prevent crossover and entry
of any lubricant or media from an attached accessory into the gearbox. This pad is thus suitable for use
with any accessory, within the mechanical limitations of the pad, with minimal concern for potential
contamination of the engine lubrication system.

Hydraulic Pump Pad

The physical description of the hydraulic pump drive pad is shown on Installation Drawing (Interface
A14). The pad drive speed to main shaft speed ratio is 6894/9827, and the available-power extraction
rating is 5 hp at 6894 rpm. Pad drive direction of rotation is clockwise, viewing the gearbox from the aft
side. Maximum allowable drive torque is 700 in-lb. Maximum allowable overhung moment on the pad
is 120 in-lb, and maximum shear is 20 lb.
This pad is intended as the drive for a hydraulic pump that uses the same media as the engine lubrication
system. For this reason, the pad drive shaft and spline connection is not sealed to hydraulic pump seal
leakage. If the Purchaser elects to use this pad for other purposes, provision must be made to prevent
contamination of the engine lube system.
This pad is also used for mechanical rotation of the gas generator for maintenance purposes.

Starter Drive Pad

The accessory gearbox is equipped with a drive pad for mounting the optional pneumatic or hydraulic
starter, or from other Purchaser sources. Details of the starter drive pad are described on Installation
Drawing. The drive shaft and spline connection on this pad is sealed and drained to prevent
contamination of the lube system from an attached accessory into the gearbox. The maximum allowable
loads on the accessory gearbox starter pad are:

Air/Oil Separator
The accessory gearbox is equipped with a dynamic air/oil separator driven off the forward side. The
function of the air/oil separator is to separate the oil from the combined gearbox and bearing sump vent
air/oil mixture. The oil is scavenged from the separator housing by the lube and scavenge pump; the air
is discharged overboard by Purchaser-provided piping.

Lube and Scavenge Pump

The accessory gearbox is equipped with a lube and scavenge pump driven off the aft side. The lube and
scavenge pump supplies oil to the gearboxes and bearing sumps via a single supply element and
scavenges the individual sumps and gearboxes via six scavenge elements. The lube and scavenge pump
drive is lubricated by an externally piped lube supply line from the main lube supply manifold.

Variable Geometry Control

The accessory gearbox is equipped with an variable stator vane control system mounted and driven from
the forward side. The engine control system schedules the compressor stator vane system as a function
of gas generator speed and compressor inlet temperature.

Maintenance Pad
This pad is the same as is used for the optional hydraulic pump. It is to be used for rotation of the gas
turbine HP rotor during borescope inspection. If the hydraulic pump is installed, it must be removed for
borescope inspection and then reinstalled.

Gas Generator Speed Sensors

The accessory gearbox is equipped with two magnetic speed pickups adjacent to the drive gear for the
variable stator vane control and the accessory pad. Details of these sensors can be found in
Instrumentation Section.

Effect on Performance
The effect of horsepower extraction from the above accessory drive pads on gas turbine performance
may be determined from the LM2500 Aero/Thermal Computerized Performance Deck.
