TUP Marks 107 Years of Excellence by Carl Martin L. Fusilero

WITH THE theme “TUP: 107 Years of Service and Excellence in Technology Education”, Technological University
of the Philippines-Manila successfully held its 107th Foundation Week Anniversary at the Centennial stage and
ground, December 2 to 6.

Dr. Nona S. Ricafort, the Chairperson of the
TUP Board of Regents (BOR). She stressed
that TUPians should continue the global
excellence of the institution and make a
difference through its mission.
“TUP was known for producing board
placers making it a premiere state university
and a center of development for aspiring
engineers and other allied courses,” Ricafort
added.

TUP conducts Estudyante Night ‘08
TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY of the Philippines (TUP)-Manila celebrated
“Estudyante Nyt ‘08 held at the covered court, December 4.

Organizations (ACSO), University
Student Government (USG) and was
supported by the Office of the Student
Affairs (OSA).

The said event started with a doxology
entitled “Everything” performed by Lakas
Angkan Youth Fellowship (LAYF) and

while other organizations namely: World
Collegiate Association for Research and
Principles (WCARP), TUPAS, and Literacy
Training Service (LTS) performed a dance
and a comical skit provided by TUPAS.

program was a disco party that ended at

Pilipinas (BSP), as he addressed the
awardees to do the best that they can.
In addition, awardees were given
memorabilia and cash award for their
loyalty and steadfast commitments
in the organizations, families and
faithfulness to the TUP community.

Astound on Stage
AS A CULMINATING activity in
the 107th founding anniversary,
administrative staffs, faculties
and the University Student
Government (USG) treated the
campus in a prestigious concert
at the University Centennial
Stage, December 3.
The concert started as Dr. Taguiam
gave his brief opening remarks
explaining that the preparation of the
Community Concert aims to raise fund
and provide the needs of the TUP
athletic delegates that will compete
in State Colleges and Universities
Athletic Association (SCUAA 2009).
Dr. Julian Marquez Jr., TUP Vice
President for Planning and Information
System, delivered his inspirational
message.
A voice over led by Dr. Romeo
S. Ebonite introduced the most
awaited part of the event. The CIE
dancers started with their moves and
followed by the TUP AdFa and USG
performances. A vocal solo and duet
indulged the audience with some of
the hit classic and modern music.
On the other hand, the faculties from
the College of Liberal Arts performed
dance numbers. A finale was prepared
by the participants’ rendition of Kenny
Rogers’ hit “Through the Years”. The
Rhapsody Band of the TUP Artists
Society continued the remaining part
of the event with their performances.
“Definitely we are not getting any
single cents in this particular event,
its only our commitment in helping
our athletic delegates,” Dr. Taguiam
explained.
The stage set-up was prepared by
the students of Art Education. This
event was divided into two parts: the
main concert and the student’s disco.
The said event was spearheaded
by Dr. Andres Z. Taguiam, Dean of
the College of Industrial Education

hidden talents by performing
in the inter-campus cultural
presentation held at the TUP
covered court, December 4.
Dr. Evangeline M. Dayap, Vice
President for Academic Affairs, started the
program by giving her welcome remarks
followed by the introduction of the guest
of honor, Dr. Godofredo Gallega, TUP
President. Administration and Faculty
(AdFa) Night highlighted with the theme
“Caribbean Night”.
The Faculty and staff from different
colleges were as follows: College of
Industrial Education (CIE), College of
Industrial Technology (CIT), College of
Liberal Arts (CLA), College of Architecture
and Fine Arts (CAFA), College of Science
(COS), including Integrated Research
and Training Center (IRTC), TUP- Taguig,
TUP-Cavite, and Manila Administrative
sectors; compete in a dance number.
The participants performed after the
deliberation of the mechanics of the
competition and presentation of judges.
The best presentation was awarded
to TUP- Cavite and received a cash prize
of Php 7,000. Better presentation was
given to Administrative sector while TUP-
Taguig received the good presentation
award. The said winners were given an
amount of Php 5,000 and Php 3,000,
respectively.
In addition, special awards were also
given to the administrative sector and
TUP Cavite . They received the award
for Best Costume for female and male
category, respectively

Brainstorms Hit TUP
IN LINE with the celebration of TUP’s 107th year of foundation, annual
Academic and Literary Contests was held at the IRTC conference Hall,
December 2.
The Academic and Literary contests were
participated by different colleges from TUP-
Manila (TUP-M), TUP-Cavite (TUP-C) and TUP-
Taguig (TUP-T). Dr. Melito A. Baccay, Dean
of College of Engineering (COE), emphasized
in his welcome remarks that the major aim of
the event was to foster unity and camaraderie
among TUP students from different campuses.
Different academic competition subjects
were: Chemistry, Math, Physics and Information
Technology.
The winners in the Chemistry category were:
Carlo Gatbunton from Taguig campus, 1st place,
followed by Virgilio Ebajo Jr. from COS of TUP-M
and Mark Joseph Bugarin from TUP Cavite 2nd
and 3rd placers respectively.
Winners in the Math category were: Fabian
Tolosa and Jaineil Sicat of TUP-C, 1st place,
while Emmanuel Briones with Gerald Bryan Go
from TUP-T and Ma. Jonalyn Orilla with Michael
Salvahan from COS of TUP-M won 2nd and 3rd
places respectively.
Rolly Paulan and Juan Marasigan of COE of
TUP-M won the 1st and 2nd places respectively
while Fabian Tolosa from TUP-C won 3rd place
in the Physics category.
Winners of the Info Tech (Information
Technology) category were: Jessie Chan from
COS of TUP-M, 1st place; Jose Antonio Perez
from COS of TUP-M and Mark Venedic Irenez
from CIT of the same campus got the 2nd and
3rd places respectively. Said winners were
awarded with medals and certificates by Dr.
Baccay.

of Extemporaneous Speech and
Pagsasalaysay ng Kuwento categories. The
winners for the Extemporaneous Speech
were as follows: Benre Zenarosa from Taguig
campus, as 1st place and Alcanza Perigrino
from COS/CLA of Manila campus, 2nd place
and Wilvic Joie Cañas from COE of TUP-M
and a cartoonist from the Philippine Artisan-
Manila, won the 3rd place.
Joseph Nico Magnifico from TUP-T had
was adjudged 1st place in the Pagsasalaysay
ng Kuwento while Joseph Sylvestre from
COS/CLA of TUP-M and Mark Lester
Eduarte from COE of TUP-M won the 2nd
and 3rd places respectively.

Vice President for Planning and Information
System; Mr. Maurelio Cabo, former
Circulation Manager of the Philippine Artisan;
Mr. Rodell Barrientos of the Chemistry

AS PART of its 107th Foundation
Anniversary, the Technological
University of the Philippines held its
first Vocal Solo and Chorale Contest
at the Conference Hall, Integrated
Research and Training Center (IRTC),
December 3.
Princess Nathalie R. Roll, College of
Engineering (COE) representative was
declared champion for the vocal solo
category with 95.30 percent accumulated
score, followed by Rikka A. Aranio from
TUP-Taguig with 92.33 and Cyrel Anne
L. Soriano from the College of Industrial
Technology (CIT) with 80 percent.
Moreover, TUP-Cavite was declared
champion with 93.33 percent in the
chorale category. College of Science-
Liberal Arts (COS-CLA) Chorale was the
2nd runner-up with 91.33 percent while
College of Industrial Education (CIE)
Chorale finished as the 1st runner-up
with 93 percent.
The criteria for judging the vocal solo
category were: tone quality, 50 percent;
musicality, 40; and deportment, 10
percent. On the other hand, the criteria
for judging for chorale were: tone quality,
30 percent; blending, 30; interpretation,30
and deportment,10. All winners received
medals and cash prizes.
The judges include Dr. Marcelo B.
Apar, former Dean of CLA; Mr. Jovitmar
Bumarlong, Pastor of TUP Campus
Ministry and Mr. Elmo Jordan Bolaños.
The organizing committee was
headed by Engr. Christopher G. Chan,

COE Reigns in Mr. and Ms. TUP Foundation
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING (COE) representatives, Samuel Aaron Dalacat
and Mary Ann Glory Racino, made their college even prouder after being
crowned as the first Mr. and Ms. TUP Foundation 2008 at the TUP Centennial
Stage, December 2.
Aside from winning the title, Racino
bagged four major awards namely: Miss
Photogenic, Best in Casual Wear, Swim
Wear and Formal Wear.
Furthermore, representatives from the
Colloege of Architecture and Fine Arts
namely: Ivan Kim Ecijan and Immaculate
Ann Tungol won as first runners-up and the
best in Talent Awards. They also bagged the
Best in Swim Wear and People’s Choice
Awards, respectively.
Moreover, Mark Anthony Abutan and
Jennifer Aquino from the College of
Industrial Technology (CIT) were ranked
as the second runners-up. Aquino also
won Ms. Congeniality and Best in School
Uniform Awards.
In addition, Rey Albert Sabater from
the College of Industrial Education (CIE)
was awarded as Mr. Photogenic, People’s
Choice and Best in Swim Wear while, Lester
del Rosario from the College of Science
(COS) bagged the Mr. Congeniality Award.
Manila Campus Holds Alumni Day
BRINGING THE week long celebration of Technological University of
the Philippines as an institution on its 107th founding anniversary,
TUP successfully celebrated the Alumni day at the IRTC building last
December 6.
With the theme “Dreams Come True”, the
said event started with a thanksgiving mass
held at the ecumenical chapel officiated by
Rev. Fr. Augistine Singh and followed by
the business meeting and the visitation to
the different colleges in the university. The
welcome remark was given by Prof. Elvira
Galang, adviser of PSAT-PCAT-TUP High
School Alumni Association (PPTHSAA).

The criteria for judging were: Physical
Appearance, 60 percent; Intelligence, 20
and Talent, 20 percent.
Judges include: Arnel Zulieta, member
of Fashion Artist Foundation; Lia Guerero,
model and producer and Pablo Mendes,
Fashion Designer.
At the latter part of the event, the
masters of the ceremony namely Joey
Natividad and Christine Pollentes
introduced the special guest for the event,

TUP Convention: On to
Renewable Energy and
Discipline
TUP CONDUCTED a convention
and lecture forum at the IRTC
Conference Hall, December 5.
It was attended by the administrative
and faculty members, students and
guests. There were two lecture fora on
the event, one is on the use of solar
energy technology and on the Anti-Red
Tape Act of 2007 (ARTA). Engr. Melanio
D. Estabillo, Facilities Manager of First
Philippine Solar Corporation, talked
about the opportunities and challenges of
Solar Manufacturing Technology. He also
discussed data in figures the pros and
cons of solar power.
Dr. Jocelyn Patrice Lolarga-Deco,
Director II of the National Museum
Field Office, Civil Service Commission
(CSC), talk on Administrative Discipline,
which tackles ARTA. She pointed that
there should be no graft and corrupt
people for an administration to function
effectively. She gave emphasis the
need for TUP to publish its Citizen’s
Charter until December 31, 2008 for
transparency on all of its transactions.
She gave notes on the “Code of Conduct
for Ethical Standards for Public Officials
and Employees” and the penalties for
those who will disobey the ethical codes.
Afterwards, the facilitators of the said
event conducted an open forum.
Although the special guest, Hon.
Edgardo J. Angara was not able to make
it to the convention, the event was still a

closing ceremonies as TUP deans,
officials and alumni showcased their
dance moves through rigodon de
honor followed by a solidarity dinner
and grill party.
“Despite the unpredictable weather,
the whole celebration was successful
as compared to last year. Two days
were allotted for the teachers and
alumni while three days were given for
the students. The whole event showed
each individual’s talent,” Dr. Marcelo
B. Apar, overall chairman of the event
quipped.

Olympiad Officiates Dance Sports
DESPITE UNFAVORABLE weather condition, TUP Sports Olympiad
conducted Dance Sports at the Covered Court after being rescheduled from
December 3 to December 4.
The event was participated by
the TUP-M six colleges such as;
College of Industrial Technology
(CIT), College of Engineering (COE),
College of Science –College of
Liberal Arts (COS-CLA), College of
Architecture and Fine Arts (CAFA),
and College of Industrial Education
(CIE).
The board of judges namely: Prof.
Minerva Anatacio, PNU Faculty;
Aldrew Simon Andino, a former
Adamson Cheerdancer Varsity;
and Prof. Rosana Dayana, dance
lecturer and choreographer had
made some adjustments on how they
will rate the performers because of
some miscommunication between
the coaches and organizers. Some
coaches thought that the execution of
the dance routine would be according
to the category they picked. As a
result, some of the participants were
not able to join other competitors as
the first music was played because
they were not informed about the
certain category.
Prof. Roberto Milton Calo, Assistant
to the President for Special Concerns,
said that the participants should be able
to dance according to the music being
played. There are two categories for the
event: the Latin America such as the
Cha-cha-cha, Rhumba and Jive and the
modern standard which includes Slow,
Waltz, Tango and Quickstep.
Laurence Albert Orante and Anna
Marie Tabañag from CIT, with the most
number of supporters, swayed their
opponents off the spotlight as they
won as the grand champion. Sherwin
Ceasico, Mischelle Carisse Mesana,
Frank Velasco and Lincy Dyan Maturan
from CIE finished as first runners-up
title with Nikko Rey Mendoza and John
Sacayanan from CIT, as the second
runners-up.
Prof. Amelia Torralba from CIT and
Prof. Gremilda Igloso from CIE, were the
coaches of the winners respectively.
“The top three winners would be the
representative of TUP for this upcoming

TUP-TAGUIG moves impressed

Technological University of
the Philippines-Taguig campus
emerged as the champion in
the Cheering Competition held
at TUP-Manila covered court,
December 4.
The six different Colleges namely:
College of Science (COS), College of
Liberal Arts (CLA), College of Industrial
Technology (CIT), College of Industrial
Education (CIE), College of Architecture
and Fine Arts (CAFA) and College of
Engineering (COE) participated in the
said event together with TUP-Taguig and
TUP- Manila cheer dancers.
All of them gave their best in the
floor but TUP-Taguig dominated the
competition. The energy conquered the
stadium as they presented their nimble
movements and stunts in their dances.
COE clinched the 1st runner up spot in
their orange and black uniform, while CIT
won as the 2nd runner up.

from December 4 and 5.
Having the highest population of
4,461 enrollees and highest number of
participating trainors and students, CIT
nabbed 309 points from the tally and won as
the over-all champion in the competition.
Furthermore, TUP-Taguig gained 272 Chess players mastering the art of mental
points while TUP-Cavite got 79. In addition, attacks.

USG, NSTP-CWTS Facilitates Immersion
IN PARTNERSHIP with the University Student Government (USG), the
National Service Training Program-Civic Welfare Training Service (NSTP-
CWTS) conducted an In-Campus Immersion, January 25.

Green and Wholesome TUP: the NSTP
way”, the students from Nutrition and

Food Technology (BSFT), proposed the
beautification project for the campus.
With this activity, ornamental plants and

an inspirational talk.

malilimutang ang pamimilipit namin sa
interview dahil sa inyo. Salamat po, nang
dahil sa inyo, pwede na kami sa call center
(ching!). bukod sa lahat, salamat sa inyong
pagtitiwala.

unibersidad. Ito marahil ang dahilan kung

Celebration’s Avalanche
After the week-long celebration of TUP- Manila’s
107 th Foundation Day, what came next was the 60th
Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights (December 10).
During the foundation day celebration, all seems
planned and being well executed. Of course some
had problems but were fortunately solved right away.
Students involved were entertained and learned the
importance of the university’s existence for more than
a century.
On the 3rd day of December at around 3:30PM,
everyone was astonished when a directive order coming
from an official was implemented. No student is being
allowed to go outside the university. All the gates were
closed. No reason was being accepted.
Stranded TUPians were worried because they have
to attend a job. Some needed to go home early for
personal reasons; some have projects to accomplish
and to submit within the day, some needed to go at the
money wire transfer office (that is just open from 9AM-
6PM) to get their allowance and many more excusable
reasons were aching for a consideration that moment.
Since the guards were just following orders, they
could never be blamed for what happened. But they
could never escape the fact that they are responsible for
their actions. There is always a better way to accomplish
whatever we are being asked for. Students must not be
pushed literally and figuratively for without them, the
university will never be an educational institution.
Moreover, in this kind of event, there are two
offices that must have been initiating an act to protect
the freedom of the students. The University Student
Government (USG) and Office of Student Affairs (OSA)
could have aided the situation.
Finally, around 5PM, the gates were opened. Though
the detention lasted for more or less just an hour, the
effect of it is immeasurable as far as the students are
concerned.
Reasons could be over or under another reason. The
thing is, an official must make sure that the orders being
implemented has the highest amount of advantages and
has the least quantity of disadvantages. We must face
the truth that most students are not just mere students.
As a whole, celebrating the university’s founding
year was successful. On the other hand, failure was
observed upon the campaign for the UDHR.
That day, TUPians were deprived of their freedom
from want. Tyranny was practiced and this thing should
never happen, in whatever way, ever again! PA
