AN ERROR ANALYSIS ON STUDENTS ABILITY TO CONSTRUCT

PASSIVE VOICE IN INTERROGATIVE FORM OF PERFECT TENSE

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

A. Background Of The Study

Language is the most essential aspect in our live. We used it to
express what we want to do. In this globalization era, English as a primary
International language which is widely used as the way of communication.
In Indonesia, English is learnt as a foreign language. It is has been applied
in the curriculum of elementary school until university level.
Learning English has two essential parts. The first language skill
and the second language component. Language skill consists of four
aspects, they are listening, reading, speaking and writing, whereas
language component consists of structure, vocabulary, pronunciation and
spelling. As we know that structure is one of students difficulties to learn
English language.
English structure has a lot of rules. Those rules are found
complicated for the student to apply. However, structure should study to
avoid learners for making mistakes. It usually occurs when the information
can be misunderstood because it has wrong structure.
One of grammatical sequences in English structure is passive
voice. Most learners who have studied passive voice find some difficulties
to construct the passive sentence. They still do not able to construct it even
they have known the pattern of passive voice. The passive voice is formed
by using to be and past participle.

B. Reason For Choosing Topic

The writer chooses this topic because of third reasons. The first
reason is she is interested in English structure, which important in learning
English. However, many students have difficulties to learn structure
English especially for passive voice. The second reason is she wants to
analyze the students errors when they construct passive voice. The last is
to find out the causes why they are not able to construct passive voice.

C. The Aims of The Research

There are two aims of the research, they are:
1. To analyze the students errors when construct the passive voice.
2. To find out the students causes in constructing passive voice.






D. Research Question

The statement of the problem are :
1. What are the students errors when construct the passive voice?
2. What are the students causes in constructing passive voice?

E. Research Focus

To limit the problem, the writer focuses on the kind of error and
the cause of the students in constructing passive voice for the fourth
semesters and only intends to find out students error to construct passive
voice in interrogative form of perfect tense such as present perfect tense,
present continuous tense and past perfect tense.

F. Research Site and Participant

Research site is English Education Study Program Faculty of
Teacher Training and Educational Sciences, Pakuan University. The writer
uses purposive sampling to get the participants. The participants are the
Fourth semester in English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher
Training and Educational Sciences. The reason for choosing the
participants is because the students who had taken structure 3 subject. She
takes students who got low scores in Structure 3 as the sample.
G. Research method
The writer uses descriptive method to conduct this research. The
method is used to find out error analysis on students ability to construct
passive voice and the causes why it happens.
The data are obtained from data collections of the students work
followed by questionnaire (test and questionnaire) and interview (Students
and teacher).
