Exploration & Production Division 20222 BLD.ELE.SDS Rev. 1 July 2003 Sheet 12 di 19
4.9. System in Electric storage batteries rooms
In storage batteries rooms on the stage of complete charging, hydrogen production for electrolysis takes place. This fact leads to classification of the following zones:((Figure 1 from guides CEI 64-14):
between the room ceiling and the penetration grid superior edge (zone with a low degree of ventilation) classified as Z1 (however, eliminable);
within the radius of 50 cm around the storage batteries penetration (EN 50272-2) Z1 for batteries of open type, Z2 for batteries if of closed type, valves regulated, i.e. hermetic.
Therefore, provision is made for cropped ceiling (Figure 2), whence to eliminate in any case the zone with a low degree of ventilation.
Penetrations with walls air induction, to assure natural ventilation under normal operation conditions as well as during complete charging stage;
Any eventual system of artificial ventilation and, in case VN of the above mentioned shall not be in grade of guaranteeing air exchange sufficient to maintain the percentage of gas (hydrogen) produced by storage batteries during the complete charging stage, under 30% of the inflammability inferior limit, as per the calculation given below.
Ventilation system should be provided in this case with two extractors, each sized for the full capacity required and each one being stand-by for the other one. Their availability (continuous functioning) shall be double, since two identical ventilation systems should be installed, independent upon common failure causes, thus guaranteeing uniform air dilution in the room, that shall be then artificially classified as non-AD.

STORAGE BATTERIES OF CLOSED TYPE WITH VALVE VENTILATION PENETRATION OPENING 0,5 m 0,5 m Z1 Z2 Figure 2 - Hazardous zones of batteries room without zone with low degree of ventilation
As indicated by Regulation DIN-VDE 0510 part 2, ventilation flow sufficient to dissolve air under 30% of the inflammability inferior limit results from the following relation :
Q = v q s n I k where :
Q = air volume m/h v = dilution factor, ratio of water-air volume on the minimum inflammability level of hydrogen v= 96%/4% = 24 q = hydrogen volume developed for electrolysis by current in every cell per 1 ampere and per 1 hour, at the temperature of 0C and pressure of 1013 bar q = 0,42 10 -3 m 3 /Ah s = Safety factor In the regulation s = 5 is advised n = Number of cells I = Current value in correspondence of which electrolytic dissociation occurs, per V > 2,4 V/elem (2A for every 100 Ah) k = Antimony content indicating factor (k = 1 for Sb>3%, k = 0,5 for Sb<3%), effects directly the value of current
Similar value is obtained by the formula in regulation EN 50272-2 (actually: v q s = 0,052)
Q = 0,05 x l x n x k
For batteries of hermetic type in Pb, the formation of hydrogen during complete charging is 5-10 times less than that with batteries of open type, thus the value of current is reduced by further factor of 0,5 and in consequence, even the capacity value. In this case ventilation is easily obtainable with only VN, penetrations with walls air induction (cropped ceiling) and/or doors air induction being sized in order to guarantee natural air flow as calculated. Therefore, the use of artificial ventilation system is not required. Eni S.p.A. Exploration & Production Division 20222 BLD.ELE.SDS Rev. 1 July 2003 Sheet 14 di 19
Penetrations shall have minimum dimensions determined in accordance with the following calculation (DIN VDE 0510 - part 2):
A (cm 2 ) 28 x Q (m 3 /h)
If provision should not be made for two of them, one shall be of entrance and the other one of exit on the opposite walls, and if possible, one shall be in the upper part and the other in the lower part.
The ventilation is considered of high degree, when it provides for dissolving, below 30% of LEL, produced gas and hydrogen vapours, within a significant distance from producing sources and ceasing the production at concentration being under LEL in all the surroundings. The availability (or reliability) of ventilation system can be classified as good as it is always present (under normal operating conditions as well as during complete charging stage). As far as the typology of electrical plant concerns, its type shall correspond to non-hazardous area, since installed in the non-AD, i.e. outside the zone compressed in the radius of 0.5 m from penetrations (ducts) (EN 50272-2 e DIN-VDE 0510).
The choice of hermetic batteries with gas recombination or gel electrolyte, almost barren of hydrogen production, provides for natural ventilation only (one grid on one side in the bottom and one grid on the other side in the upper part) and for ordinary lighting system of normal type (only Watertight type).
However, for preventive purposes, ordinary lighting system and safety lighting system can be anyway installed in Ex execution manner. Eni S.p.A. Exploration & Production Division 20222 BLD.ELE.SDS Rev. 1 July 2003 Sheet 15 di 19
4.10. Fire detection and Fire-Fighting System
When required the fire-fighting system will be composed of:

Sensors will be installed, when required, if the cabin is near the classified areas, at a distance that, for processing or atmospheric reasons, does not guarantee safety. When these conditions persist, detectors will be mounted before to conditioning intakes. In the absence of these, they will be installed close to the cabin on a stake placed at 1.5 m height from the ground.
4.10.4. Extinguishing System with gas saturation
It is composed of one or more cylinders containing the extinguisher connected to a channelling and distribution system installed on the ceiling and under the false floor, in the presence of this. Cylinders will be installed outside, in adequate spaces created in the cabin itself and protected by steel plate panels. If the cabin consists of more rooms, each of them will have a separate plant and will be sized according to its volumes. In rooms protected by extinguishing systems with inert gas saturation, optical/acoustic alert systems will be installed inside and an optical one outside next to the entrances, with inclusion/exclusion selectors on the entrance and interceptions doors. All instruments mounted in the cabin will be connected to electric boxes installed inside and outside the cabins.
The type to be utilized shall depend upon evaluation that shall consider the use of cabins, manned/unmanned and technical/economic factors. Extinguishers to be normally utilized are as follows:
Other extinguishers typologies shall be specified in the Data Sheet, extinguishers containing chlorinefluorocarbides (CFC) shall not be used in any case.
In relation to the types of plant and if required, cabins will also be equipped with portable CO 2
extinguishers as well as the above systems. Eni S.p.A. Exploration & Production Division 20222 BLD.ELE.SDS Rev. 1 July 2003 Sheet 16 di 19

5.6. Battery Room Extractors
For the possible production of hydrogen during the charging operations of storage batteries the battery rooms should be constructed with an adequate number of air exchange per hour. If from the calculations described in paragraph 4.9 the natural ventilation through grids results insufficient, two extractors shall be in stalled, one being in stand-by for the other one, they will be of EExdIICT3 execution. Their power will be measured in order to maintain in any case the hydrogen concentration inferior to 30% of LEL. Eni S.p.A. Exploration & Production Division 20222 BLD.ELE.SDS Rev. 1 July 2003 Sheet 18 di 19
