1 Introduction
1.1 General
The 862 MIR temperature selector is used for interfacing an 863 Multiple Resistance Thermometer (MRT).
This unit is basically a solid state electronic element selector, containing all hardware necessary for
selecting and measuring an MRT with up to 12 temperature elements with one or two spot elements. The
862 must always be used in combination with an 854 level gauge, 873 SmartRadar or an 877 Field Display
and Interface. These instruments must be equipped with an MPU, HPU or OPU option board to interface the
862 MIR.
1.2 Operating principle
Since most liquids, stored in storage tanks, are not homogeneous in temperature, an average temperature
measurement over the entire liquid column is required.
A Multiple Resistance Thermometer can provide this true average temperature measurement.
An MRT comprises a number of resistance elements of different lengths, all starting near the tank bottom.
To measure the average product temperature, the longest fully immersed element is automatically selected
and its temperature measured.
The average gas temperature is calculated by measuring the temperature of the longest resistance
thermometer element and subtracting the contribution of the average product temperature. When the MRT
is equipped with a spot element in the upper part of the MRT, or there is a separate gas spot element, then
the gas temperature is measured directly.
The optional board, located in the 854 level gauge, 873 SmartRadar or 877 FDI, selects the longest
immersed element for the average product temperature calculation. The XPU processor in these
instruments converts the average temperature into a serial Bi-Phase Mark modulated signal which is
transmitted via the 2-wire Enraf field bus to the supervisory system.
Intrinsic safety is obtained by applying full galvanic isolation of the primary connections and the remainder of
the circuitry.
The measurement current for the resistance thermometers is 1 mA. Selection of each appropriate resistance
element is obtained by solid state switches.
In order to warrant a maximum integrity and accuracy of the measurement values, a number of
measurements is taken, such as:
automatic offset compensation
linearity testing
gain calibration
To enable these corrections, a high stable and precise reference and test resistor (0.005% and 3ppm/ C)
are incorporated. All measurements and corrections are performed continuously.
All measured data retrieved from the convertor is accompanied by status information and a BCC (Block
Check Character).
1.3 Measuring sequence
The measuring cycle of the 862 MIR takes approximately 37 seconds. In that time the following data is
measured (see table on next page).

Each resistance measurement is measured with 1 mA current and without current. The measurement
without current is an offset measurement.
In measurement cycle 1 a conversion factor is determined: Hz/ohm. With this conversion factor all other
resistance measurements are calculated. This conversion factor is determined with every measurement
(37 seconds). In this way an auto calibration of the 862 MIR is obtained.
Commissioning
Page 6
2 Commissioning
The commissioning of the optional MPU, HPU or OPU board should be performed after the basic
commissioning of the level gauge, radar gauge or indicator. The items mentioned in this section resides

5 Item description
All items, related to the temperature measurement with the 863 MRT / 862 MIR, connected to the optional
MPU, HPU or OPU board are described in this chapter.
The items can be of the type N (Novram), D (data) or C (command).
Novram items are stored in the NOVRAM on the XPU board of the instrument (for instance: element type,
item MT).
Data items contains measured and calculated data or error codes (for instance: average product
temperature, item AP). Data items are not stored in the NOVRAM and are lost after a reset or power down.
Command items result in an action (there is only one command: store, item ST).
The protection level refers to the protection level 1 or 2 password which is required to issue them.
Item: AG Average gas temperature
Type: D
Protection: no write access
Dimension: determined by item TD
Default value: IF@@9999999
The average gas temperature is obtained by computing the resistance of the non-immersed part, minus length of item MG, from the
longest element. For the description of the 4 status bytes, refer to item MQ (chapter 3.2).
Item: AP Average product temperature
Type: D
Protection: no write access
Dimension: determined by item TD
Default value: IF@@9999999
The average product temperature is calculated from the resistance of the longest immersed element.
The longest immersed element is selected for the average product temperature if the level is above the element length + offset (item
MO) + product immersion depth (item MP). Refer to figure 2.1. For the description of the 4 status bytes, refer to item MQ (chapter 3.2).
Item: DP Decimal separator
Type: N
Protection: level 2
Entry format: one ASCII character; . (point) or , (comma)
Default value: . (point)
With the decimal separator item, a selection can be made what character is to be used for the decimal separator in all settings and
measured data for level, temperature, density and pressure. The decimal separator can be:
. point
, comma
When the decimal separator is changed, all items which holds the decimal separator, must be changed to the new format.
Note:
When the instrument is equipped with an XPU 2 board, the decimal separator is automatically changed in all related items.
The floating point format will always contain a point as decimal separator.

Item: MG Gas immersion depth
Type: N
Protection: level 2
Dimension: determined by item LD
Default value: +000.1000 (m) for 877 FDI
+000.5000 (m) for 854 level gauges and 873 SmartRadar
Distance MG is introduced to reduce the heat-transfer (via thermo-well) on the spot just above the product interface. Refer to figure 2.1.
Item: MI Switch hysteresis
Type: N
Protection: level 2
Dimension: determined by item LD
Default value: +000.1000 (m)
To prevent erratic readings by the on/off switching of temperature elements due to small level variations, a switch hysteresis is
incorporated in selecting the elements. Refer to figure 2.1.
Item: MN Number of elements
Type: N
Protection: level 2
Entry format: two ASCII digits
Default value: 16
Item MN specifies the number of elements connected to the 862 MIR (inclusive the spot element).
The maximum number of elements which can be connected is 13 (i.e. 13 elements from an MRT without spot element, or 12 elements

level below lowest element
alternative element selected
Item: U0 .. UC Calculated positions of spot elements
Type: D
Protection: no write access
Dimension: determined by item LD
Default value: IF@@<level>
These 13 items contains the calculated elements lengths from the 863 MRT with respect to the lower end of the MRT. The distances of
items MO, MI, MG and MP are not yet taken into account in items U0 .. UC. For details on the status bytes, refer to chapter 3.2.
The table below gives the element lengths for MRT with spot element (MT=QXX) and MRT without spot element (MT=RXX).

Element MT = QXX MT = RXX Element MT = QXX MT = RXX
U0 0.25 (m) 0.65 (m) U7 7.35 (m) 9.25 (m)
U1 0.65 (m) 1.25 (m) U8 9.25 (m) 11.65 (m)
U2 1.25 (m) 1.95 (m) U9 11.65 (m) 14.65 (m)
U3 1.95 (m) 2.85 (m) UA 14.65 (m) 18.45 (m)
U4 2.85 (m) 4.15 (m) UB 18.45 (m) 22.95 (m)
U5 4.15 (m) 5.65 (m) UC 22.95 (m) 29.65 (m)
U6 5.65 (m) 7.37 (m)
Note:
For MPU software version A0.8 and lower, these element lengths are for the spot 0.3 m and for the other elements 0.35 m higher.
Example:
MO = 0.3 m, MP=0.5 m, MI=0.1 m.
Element U4 (for an MRT with spot element) switches on at the level of: 2.85 + 0.3 + 0.5 = 3.65 m.
